“Is the back panel wood or one of those cardboard panels? and if it is a cardboard panel would it lessen the sturdiness of the stand to leave it off or cut a section out behind one of the shelves?”

The back panel is a cardbord type material that could be cut or modified. I chose to remove them to allow my audio components to go further back so the jacks were not impeded.
