“Do you actually NEED this filter? Do you actually NEED this filter? What happens if you don't replace it? I live in an area with great tap water, and paying 50 bucks every time the light flashes and say "replace" seems unnecessary and costly.”

We asked the repairman that question. Has to have a filter in order to work. Delayed our installation because one wasn't included with the new fridge.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.you only NEED the filter if you want FILTERED water. It's worth it when you realize how many gallons of ice and water you get free of contaminants. Should last about 6 months under normal use.

You don't have to buy the filter if the local water is great or if you have a water filtration system installed. I just bought it out of instinct. I actually could have saved a little money.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.My light came on after 10 months or so. I didn't think it was too expensive. Of ccourse, it is going to be more expensive than the tap water, but if you buy filtered water at the store like me it saves lot of trouble and some money, too.

Samsung recommends maintaining the filtration system in refrigerator models that have it to help prevent damage to the internal water lines that can result from impurities or debris in the water supply. The water dispenser and ice maker are designed to function whether or not a filter is installed, however, so homes with an external filtration or reverse osmosis system would not need to replace the filter regularly. - Ms. Samsung
