• @Prudent, While this model doesn't have built-in hardware encryption, you can use Bitlocker-to-go to encrypt it as an external drive. If you have a Mac you can also APFS format it with optional encryption, so the answer is yes. Even Linux supports encryption of external media.

• Whatever backup software you use should take care of encryption; if not, get better backup software. There are always ways to encrypt or password protect drives. Free ones are iffy, at best. You get what you pay for, I guess. Invest in a good backup software that has encryption capabilities, or password protect your backups.
