While this model doesn't have built-in hardware encryption, you can use Bitlocker-to-go to encrypt it as an external drive. If you have a Mac you can also APFS format it with optional encryption, so the answer is yes. Even Linux supports encryption of external media.

Whatever backup software you use should take care of encryption; if not, get better backup software. There are always ways to encrypt or password protect drives. Free ones are iffy, at best. You get what you pay for, I guess. Invest in a good backup software that has encryption capabilities, or password protect your backups.
