“Hi, It says that I need to reformat the external hard drive each time when I switch between MAC and windows PC. Will I lose my files that was saved from my windows PC when I connect to MAC and reformat? Or can I store/use files from both MAC and Windows?”

Yes and no. You can use recovery programs to retrieve the files if they haven’t been written over. What you need to do to ensure that the HDD doesn’t need to be reformatted every single time is to format in exFAT as it can be read and written to by both Windows and macOS.
