yes they are. But you need to format/reformat accordingly. You can also use with both Mac and PC if you choose the right formatting type.

On the box it says requires reformatting for Mac but doesn't say how to do it.

Yes. You just need to format it for the Mac file system. To do so , Just go to the Disk Manager utility , select the drive - Erase -and select the file system called Journaled.
