Technically, it is possible and very easy to do so, but it has some setbacks. While installing the tax software, simply choose your device location as the destination folder and voila! However, you might run into some potential file registry issues later (or not, depending on the software itself) . This can cause negligible to severe errors. I have dozens of programs I use that way, only one or two of them can't be used using this method. The ideal situation is if your tax software offers a portable installation. If it doesn't, there is 80% chance it might work. P.s. You can always install it on your computer and simply copy the folder to your new hard drive.

For tax information it is critical that you burn copies of the data to a CD/DVD. You are legally responsible for keeping your tax files for 7 years and the odds of a hard drive crash increase dramatically each year after year 4.

You cant install it on the portable drive and expect to take it to ANY OTHER computer and have it work. You may be better off installing it on the primary drive in your system and save all the backup files to the portable for extra security.
