Hello! This drive can be formatted for macOS Extended or APFS file systems using Disk Utility. Personally, I would go for a solid state model if you're going to be putting valuable files on it because the failure rate on these 5TB drives from WD is pretty high in my experience (2/3 have died so far and once they start clicking and they get un-mounted they refuse to mount and the files are not retrievable without spending an hour and a leg on data recovery). If you want to offset data recovery costs, the solid state is more expensive up front for the dollars/TB but the reliability and speed are much better since there's less mechanical parts in them - which both may be of value to you when you're talking about photos and storing in raw format which are also considerably larger in size (this cuts down on transfer time significantly).
