Hi, Sony added support for external USB hard drives on the PS5 with their April 2021 update. However, due to PS5 restrictions, games can only be played off the console’s internal SSD. As such, external USB storage hard drives only function as a faster way to hot-swap games and data on or off the PS5’s internal storage. -Need Help? Please see our "'Contact Us" page for information.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can do either one. The fastest way is to format it on your ps4, download all your games to the drive, then just plug it into you ps5 and reformat it (it doesn't delete any data in the transfer). But you can also just plug it straight into the ps5 and download the ps4 games there, but it will take longer with the downloads and formatting. Just as a heads up though, ps5 games can't run on this drive, according to Sony, ps5 games require faster read/upload/download speeds, so installing them on the actual ps5 or an m.2 drive is your only option.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Format it on PS5 and you can then copy/DL your PS4 titles to it.
