No you don't need to hook up to HDMI. Standard cable hook up will just be fine but you may loose some resolution.

With the AT&T Uverse receiver since it has several types of video connection ports the answer is "No", it does not require it; but HDMI will give you the best picture with the convenience of just one wire connection for both video and sound.

This item needs an HDMI cable for HD channels.
