• The side with the ice maker in it would still be a freezer even without if Ice/Water is not connected. Only the other side is the refrigerator. So, one side is the freezer and the other side is the refrigerator.

• I'm no expert, but I doubt that the freezer could be anything but a freezer, either with a working ice maker or not.

• Hi jess, for this Whirlpool - 28.4 Cu. Ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator, the unit has both a Refrigerator compartment and a freezer compartment. Not having the Ice Maker would still make this unit a side-by-side.
