What's the best way to connect to a smart tv? null

Use an amplifier with optical input, all smart tv's have optical output.

Some TVs can provide a little bit of amplified power that could work, but the best way is definitely by using a stereo amp or theater amp. If you are using them outdoors you will typically use much more power than with the same speaker in an enclosed space. This again leads to using a separate amp.

You would still need the audio cables with those inputs. Not sure if this is a feature on all smart TVs.
