“Does anyone know how this system compares to good quality soundbars with subwoofer? Is this system better than something like the LG SL8YG? I imagine it would be given it's a full home theater system.”

For the best surround sound, having rear speakers is necessary. Virtual surround is never as good as the real thing. In a small room a soundbar may be fine, but you have very limited control of sound direction because you cannot move speakers to the necessary position in order to 'fill up the space' with sound. I hope that makes the difference clear.
