I have done this when I was an installer: use an 4 ohm resistor in line with the positive output of each channel. Makes a better match to the receiver, and lets the resistor (if in a metal package with cooling fins) take more of the heat. If you can find one, a 4 ohm non-inductive resistor works a bit better. Most receivers never notice the metal packaged resistors...and if you open a speaker switcher with a protection circuit, they use metal resistors heatsinked to the metal case.
