“The manual says this receiver needs 11 inches clearance on top. I wanted to set my Yamaha CD player on top of receiver, can I do that safely. Also volume seems low, starts at around 40, I would like it louder.”

Don't do it. Heat is a killer of all electronics. Opt for separate shelves. Always. Maybe put the CD player underneath.
