    Good content even in 4K

I managed to get this connected to my UHD TV (an LG 60") and as well used it on 802.11ac and ethernet network, as it came with an ethernet adapter so I tried that for better connectivity and bandwidth. It controlled my home theatre audio system no hitch (a Visio), and I got the $10 video rental credit and watched HD and 4K content. The selection (especially for Amazon Prime members) is impressive, and the unit can turn on and off the TV and audio system along with itself, and of course work the Philips lighting in my bedroom. I do not use a cable box so cannot comment on that functionality.

    Upgrade from Fire Tv

I had a gen 2 fire tv that died on me recently so I decided to wait for this to come out as a replacement since the gen 3 fire TVs we’re getting lukewarm reviews. This fire tv cube is a pretty solid upgrade, I never had an echo so I’m still learning the quirks around Alexa and how you have to word your commands. I do have an issue sometimes where I’ll tell Alexa to turn the tv on and see the lights on the cube light up like she understands the command, but like my wife, ignores me and decides to just not turn on the tv. If I repeat the command usually it’ll work on the second try. Besides the small issues around some of the voice commands, I would say this is a nice upgrade from the fire TV. It runs fast and I’ve had no issues with WiFi connectivity (actually seems better than the previous fire tv I had). It does comes with an Ethernet adapter in case you’d rather hook up a lan line.

I am an owner & loyal fan of all Amazon Fire TV & echo devices because of Amazon superior hardware reliability & customer service. The Cube simply combines some of the Amazon echo features with the Fire TV, With the 1.5 GHZ Quad-core processor & 2 GB RAM, Generous 16 GB hard drive the Cube is quick to response yet you will still encounter lag on large files & games due to the under-performing CPU & the 2GB RAM Installed on this system. Impressive crisp & clear streaming picture even without using a 4K TV Same modern & user friendly interface you will find on all Amazon Fire TV systems, very easy to navigate. Now includes many instructional videos right from the Fire TV homepage under "Fire TV Cube Tips & Tricks". Very simple setup out of the box & very easy to link the Cube to control your TV, Cable, Xbox, Playstation, DVR, Apple TV, Sound System ……..using the “Equipment control” located in the Fire TV Settings, with just few clicks following the onscreen menu and instructions you will be able to add & control any compatible system you want to link to the Fire TV Cube. 16 GB is the total storage on this device but keep in mind you will only have 12.4 GB available, the remaining 4 GB space is used by Amazon OS. If you are wondering if you can still side–load apps and games on the Cube the answer is Yes. This would have been a 5 star rating but, considering; The Fire TV Cube still lacks the SD card & USB ports which is very disappointing for someone who wants to expand the storage, view photos & videos stored on an SD or USB drive or just likes using a USB wireless keyboard without having to plug & unplug adapter each time we need to use a USB adapter, SD adapter or the Ethernet. The cube has 2 GB RAM, 3 GB RAM would have been optimal for this system. Ethernet is supported via included Ethernet Adapter not build in. Still needs software improvement simple example, the voice command “Go to my videos” once there you will not be able to scroll right or left, up or down via voice command & must use the remote to scroll, another is you cannot access Netflix via voice command if you have multiple Netflix profiles, yes the voice command will open Netflix yet it will leave you stranded on the “Who’s watching Netflix” sign in screen. As always and for customer convenience Amazon systems shipped preregistered to the purchaser Amazon account and doesn’t require account password upon activation which makes your account & Amazon photos vulnerable if the device ends up in the wrong hand so be sure if you are purchasing any Amazon system as a gift or just for extra security to select the gift option during checkout, doing so will prevent any misuse of your Amazon account if the package gets lost. For someone who never experienced the previous 2nd Gen. Fire TV box or Echo device this would seems a great device, but for the rest of us the performance of the Cube is way below expectations as it is simply the $69 2017 release of the Fire TV Pendant with some Alexa & echo features added to it. In late 2015 Amazon 2nd Generation Fire TV 4K box was considered by many to be the flagship of all streaming devices, Sadly over the years Amazon did not keep up with the competition and focused more on cutting costs than to offer a higher end streaming device that can actually compete with Nvidia Shield, in my opinion for Amazon to crush other top line streaming devices & become the flagship of all streaming devices they should introduce “Cube Pro” with better CPU, RAM , features & game controller. Once Amazon correct the software issues with a new update I will change my ratings from 3 Stars to 4 and only then I would recommend it to a friend. Bottom line Amazon missed the mark on this one!

First I love this decice as a streamer. I do use voice commands to start and run the Fire TV functions. Alexa works great and the microphones hear me even when listenening to loud music. Where I had issues is using this as a universal remote. The commands didn’t consistently work with my Directv box and sometimes the commands would operate the TV I have in another room that has a Harmony remote setup. Also if I have my TV, cube and Directv on I don’t see a way to power them off together. Conclusion The Alexa and streaming portions work great so I am keeping the cube. I’m hopeful that through updates the universal remote functions will someday work good.

Traded my logitech harmony hub for this. Works great. Controls my tv and sound bar great. I like being able to control my tv from across the room with my voice and can change channels or adjust the volume while I cook without having to pick up a remote.

I bought this as a pre-sale release , i was upgrading a regular Firestick and liked the idea of having a cube that would not only do FireTV but also work my home automation as well as operate the TV , when i got it i set up was easy , everything that its supposed to do it does except for turning the channels on the TV and muting and unmuting the TV , when i ask it to change to channel 321 it goes to channel 21 or channel 32 or channel 3 even though it repeats exactly what i say somewhere between the cube and the satellite box the channel gets mixed up , i called Amazon and was told it was a problem with communication between the cube and DirecTv boxs , i was told i was not the only one with this problem and they were working with DirecTv to fix the problem and would be doing a update when one was available , other then that the cube works as it is supposed to and i am happy with it , although the Tv problem is a drawback for me since that was the main reason i upgraded my Alexa system. I can say i am happy with the customer service acting on my complaint , they have called me several times on the phone to ask me to try some settings changes that might fix the problem , sadly though they didnt help the problem.

I was impressed with the Home theater function but the performance was so 2016. The TV guide took 3 to 4 seconds to load and most other menus were also slow. Very disappointed that Amazon used older hardware when they had a great opportunity to surpass Nvidia Shield with the Echo feature if they only used fater hardware. I was able to fix all of my issues by purchasing a Nvidia Shield.

Purchased yesterday and after initial setup seemed to be working fine. I had "Alexa" turn everything off and went to the store. When I came home it wouldn't turn on my Time Warner/Spectrum cable box. I spent almost three hours on the phone with Tech support to no avail. Have to try again this AM. If they get it working I'll post another review. It does work fine for the Fire TV portion.

    Nice Addition to Xfinity Setup

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Can voice control some functions of Xfinity without a remote. One update sometimes have made it less reliable at voice recognition. Fails to turn on my soundbar so regularly I have to always have a remote for that handy desite adding additional IR blaster. It always mutes it and raises/lowers sound so the power on/off is some kind of configuration issue despite it working well in setup mode. Despite all my issues it is a good 4K HDR streamer even with a Roku powered TV.

    Disappointed once AGAIN!

I was so excited to get the Fire TV Cube when it was announced thinking that Amazon would finally give us the Updated version of the Fire TV 2 that we all been waiting for but i was disappointed once AGAIN! The Fire TV Cube has the same specs as the Fire TV "3". It has a Cheap CPU Quad Core Amlogic S905z with a Mali-450MP that most $25.00 Android Boxes have inside for years at this point. Benchmark Score for the Fire TV Cube are...Single Core 610, Multi-Core 1351. Benchmark Score for the Fire TV 2 (Gen 2) are Single Core 1,557, Mutli-Core 2,908. The Fire TV 2 from 2015 is much more powerful then the Cube. Double Plus the power... Its sluggish, it stutters, very slow scrolling and it takes too much time from button press to on screen action... Also, Alexa is extremely slow to process certain commands that its just better to use the remote. Very disappointed with this streaming box from Amazon, it seems the more popular it gets, in order to make more mark up ,they really cheap out on the chip sets withing the Fire TV line. When they make a really successor to the Fire TV 2 , i will be all in but until then, i will not be purchasing anymore Fire TVs...

I have a echo and 2 dots. I was really looking forward to this fire cube. I have the cube for only a week. So far not so good. I like the fact it could turn on the tv, switch inputs, and display weather forecast and so on. But as the more I use it the more the voice recognition starts failing. I was thinking about getting the harmony hub until this came out. Thinking this could replace it. Which I still do but in do time. As of now....NO!!!

Concept good. Limited universal remote functions currently. Worked OK first day. Lost most functions when used next morning. Amazon needs to update hand controller to have keys to do functions not supported by voice commands. Support off shore and hard to understand with background noise from other sport personnel. Still up in the air about keeping. If Alexa does not understand command goes to home (Fire TV Cube). Currently do not recommend as is.

    Not up to par

This review is coming from someone who has every smart home device imaginable. I have been using Harmony and Alexa for the past couple years with pretty reliable results but thought maybe I could eliminate my harmony hubs. I went out and bought 2 of these on release day. The biggest problem for me is when you tell Alexa to turn on the TV she switches the input to the Amazon fire homepage even if your TV was on cable when turned on. That means every time you say alexa turn on the tv you also have to say alexa switch to cable unless you are going to stream something. That is not user friendly at all. Second major problem is I have a tv connected to a sound bar with an optical cable like many people do. When you switch inputs to cable Alexa trys to respond through the sound bar but no sounds come out so you cannot hear any responses if you are on any other input but fire TV. This is the point where I put the cube back in its box and return. FAIL Amazon !

    NOT!!! Cable Boxes Supported

Amazon writes "With Alexa on Fire TV Cube, you can turn cable and satellite boxes on/off and tune to different TV channels. Cable or satellite boxes from DIRECTV/AT&T U-verse, DISH, Comcast, Spectrum, Verizon, Cox, and Frontier support this functionality." Returned mine because my Spectrum cable box would not switch to channels with my voice.
