    iPhone 12 vs iPhone 6

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The iPhone 12, released in September 2020 is by far the best phone product Apple has made so far and is one of the top competitors in the cell phone industry. I bought my iPhone 12 in January 2021 and have used it for 8 months now. My previous phone was an iPhone 6. I owned my iPhone 6 from November 2017 to January 2021, so I used it for about 3 and a half years. The iPhone 6 was released in September 2014. So, considering the huge gap between the releases of these phones, it was definitely a significant upgrade in almost every aspect. In terms of the physical aspects of the iPhone 12 the design, display, cameras, and durability have been greatly improved upon since the iPhone 6. In terms of the digital aspects of the iPhone 12, the speed, Siri (your digital assistant), unlock features, and charging time have been greatly improved upon since the iPhone 6. I would say that one of the only downsides to the iPhone 12 is the great cost. iPhone 12 has a very sleek and smooth design, with ceramic shield fronts and glass backs on top of the aerospace-grade aluminum body, not to mention the array of colors it comes in: black, white, red, green, blue, and purple. The iPhone 6 had an aluminum body and was only available in gold, silver, and space gray. The size of the iPhone 12 is perfect to fit in my hand, with a Super Retina XDR display of 6.1 inches compared to the smaller iPhone 6 with a Retina HD display size of only 4.7 inches. The iPhone 12 has a Dual 12MP camera system – composed of a Wide and an Ultra Wide lens, compared to the iPhone 6’s Single 8MP Wide camera. However, a downside to these upgraded camera lenses is that they stick out a few millimeters from the back of the phone, so when the phone is dropped on its back, the cameras are usually the first thing to crack. I cracked my 0.5x lens within a month or two of owning my iPhone 12. The regular lens still works perfectly and the 0.5x lens just has a small blur when you use it to take photos, it’s not super noticeable but it is still sad that the cameras are so easy to crack, even with a protective case on. However, the rest of the phone is not very susceptible to fall damage because of the ceramic shield front. I have dropped my phone probably hundreds of times since January, even on tile floor and concrete, and have not cracked the screen or glass back at all. The iPhone 12 is also water resistant to a depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. The iPhone 6 is not water resistant at all. Speed is a huge factor to consider when comparing these phones, as the iPhone 12 runs much quicker. My iPhone 6 would constantly freeze up and sometimes randomly close apps while I was using them. I have never had any issues with my iPhone 12 doing anything like this. It is very quick and never freezes. Another feature I found improved was Siri because, in order to use Siri on an iPhone 6, it had to be plugged in and you had to hold the home button. Now, I can just talk to Siri whenever and get a response. I would say that the most convenient feature is the Face ID unlock, considering I use it every day. It can recognize you in different lightings, even at nighttime, and can recognize you with and without glasses. The only downside is that when wearing a mask, you have to put in your passcode because it can’t recognize your face in a mask. However, I recently bought an Apple watch and there is a feature where your watch can unlock your phone for you if it recognizes that you are wearing a mask. The Face ID is much better and more convenient than the Touch ID on the iPhone 6 in my opinion. Both the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 6 have a built-in rechargeable lithium‑ion battery, however the charge times greatly differ. The iPhone 12 has a fast charge feature when using a 20 watt or higher adapter, it makes the phone charge up to 50% within 30 minutes. The iPhone 6 does not have any fast-charging features. The iPhone 12 comes with a USB-C to lightning cable, which is very inconvenient for most users because in order to use it, you must buy a special adapter separately to be able to use the charging cord, unless you already have a USB to lightning cord from a previous iPhone. Luckily, I still had plenty of cable cords and adapters from my iPhone 6, which work the same as the USB-C versions, without the hassle of having to purchase a separate adapter for it to work. The iPhone 12 can also be charged wirelessly or with Apple’s MagSafe accessories. The iPhone 6, however, has no wireless charging capabilities and can only be charged using a USB to lightning cable. The extreme downside to the greatness of the iPhone 12, however, is that it is very expensive, now starting at $699 on the Apple website. It was $799 at release in September 2020 but is now $100 cheaper because of the announcement of the iPhone 13’s upcoming release. The iPhone 6 was originally sold for $649 at release. But now that they are so outdated, Apple does not even sell them on their website anymore, but you can find them online for around $99-150 depending on the retailer. *I got all of my specification information directly from Apple's webpage.

Giant leap from the iPhone 8

My wife and I were ready to upgrade our phones this year after having the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus for the last few years. We were able to upgrade during the window of getting an $800 credit for our 8's, so the deal was hard to pass up. We are both so glad we did. The difference between the 12 (the phone my wife got) and the 12 Pro (the phone I got) is impossible to see when looking at the front of the phone (we regularly get our phones swapped), and they perform very similarly in most regards. I got the 12 Pro because of the camera (which really is phenomenal; see my review for the iPhone 12 Pro), but the 12 is excellent in its own rite. You can read hundreds of reviews on most of the features, so I won't go into great detail in this review, but there are a few highlights to point out. The camera, while not at the level of the 12 Pro, is really excellent. It's hard to take bad photos with the phone, as the software does a lot behind the scenes making each photo really pop. The phone is also really fast. I didn't feel like the 8 was especially slow (though it started to lag a bit toward the end), but the 12 is blazing fast. It's not flawless, and it has a few glitches from time to time, but it's really easy and smooth to use. The size is a perfect transition from the 8 to the 12. It is actually slightly smaller in body but a much bigger screen. My wife has smaller hands, so the size really matters. We expected she'd want the 12 mini, but after feeling the size of each, she opted for the 12. It's very comfortable for her, and the screen size was well worth the larger size. The design is really pretty. I have the Pacific Blue iPhone 12 Pro, and it is a truly beautiful phone. But, the Blue iPhone 12 is very bold and very good looking. I was surprised that she went with blue; usually she's gone for lighter colors on her phone. But, she saw the blue and loved the boldness of it. Apple did an excellent job with picking the colors of this generation of phones. There are a ton of other things to love about this phone, but again, you can read a lot about it from other sources. But, bottom line, it's an excellent phone, especially if you're upgrading from a phone as far back as the 8 or earlier.

I usually pick up a new iPhone every year, so this year is no different. Going from an 11 to 12, I’m actually happy that the phone is lighter and less bulky. The flat sides make the phone easier to grip and give a more substantial look to it. The new chipset is faster than last year’s and all tasks I’ve thrown at it have been handled without issue. I really like the new blue color and I’m happy I decided on it. Battery life seems on par with the 11, and since I’m not really a power user I have plenty of juice left at the end of the day. If you’re coming from an older phone you’ll probably be more than happy with the performance, look and feel, and battery life on the iPhone 12.

We are an iPhone family and my wife thought she would like my iPhone 12 Pro Max but said it was too big for her hands, she is coming from an XR and this one was perfect. Better battery, better screen and faster. She loves it and the camera blows away the XR. No wonder why this is Apple's best selling phone right now.

I’m delighted with my iPhone 12 Mini because I wanted a phone that would fit in my shirt pocket. With the smaller notch and lack of a Home button, I have a smaller sized phone with a larger screen — which fits an extra row of icons. The Mini has the same fast processor and OLED screen type as its larger siblings, so it didn’t cut back on capabilities. The one noted cutback is the smaller battery, but I don’t game or stream on my phone, so its shorter battery life has not been an issue for me as I charge less than once a day. Haven’t tested the other improvements, like the supposed stronger glass (I still use a protective case and screen overlay), improved water resistance, 5G, etc. It takes a little bit of getting used to the lack of a Home button. Face ID doesn’t work with a mask on, but hopefully that issue will be remedied later this year as the COVID vaccine rolls out.

Awesome phone! The best non pro version to have. It has everything you need. It is fast. The cameras take fantastic photos. The software runs smoothly and it is a breeze to upgrade from the previous version of iPhone. The choice of colors are beautiful. This phone is a winner!

Perfect size, weight. Amazing build quality. Makes my Xr seem ancient speed-wide. Did not expect such a massive jump up from the old (24 months?) phone to this one.

Enjoying new iPhone. Light, easy to use. Obvious dramatic speed increase from prior iPhone 7 model. Bit of a learning curve for someone used to fingerprint lock and home button as opposed to facial ID. But Face ID very fast even in dim light.

I'm enjoying the phone so far but still missing my home button to be honest. Siri is laggy at times and doesn't respond well. So far I haven't found anything bad so far the wireless charging is slow and i prefer the charge cable anyways but don't understand why they had to be cheap and not include the power brick.

This was upgraded from 8+. Enjoying the speed and size/lightness. I waited to order moment I could online. I tried with Att for a half hour with frustration then tired Best Buy. Best Buy is great. So easy to order. Loved the tracking from order to door. My last phone was bought in Best Buy store nice also. My son then wanted a Pro and his friends where saying 2 take weeks. I went to Best Buy took 5 days

I upgraded from IPhone 6 to 12 on ATT. After purchasing online the order was ready for curbside pick-up in less than one hour. I followed the directions for ATT transfer and was easily able to transfer all of the data to the new phone. Activation was also easy and the new phone was connected and working right away. The display on the IPhone 12 is beautiful. Pictures and videos are great and all of the Apps load and run really fast.

Excellent choice for the parents. moved them up fro the 7 and they love the larger screen and viewing area. Much easier for them to see. They're learning to switch to the the swipe. Biggest thing they enjoy is the camera/picture quality. Great for saving their memories! As octogenarians, Apple makes it so easy for them to use. Thanks!

Upgraded from iPhone 6 to iPhone 12, so far this has been a good choice for me. Battery life improved when I went into the settings and made a few adjustments. Haven’t tried the camera yet, however the iPhone 12 does everything I need it to and seems to do it flawlessly in 5G.
