Never had the series 1, but from the reviews it seemed not much more than an extension of your phone. This is more of an actual GPS and fitness watch than its predecessor.

I really like the watch and especially like that it helps me track my appointments and messages

Tracks her runs without her phone using GPS. Swims with it on doesn't have to worry about taking it. Looking to by myself the series 2 soon.

I use it for running, cycling, swimming. I like the ability to load apps like Runkeeper or Strava right on the watch. Great product, Apple!
