My first review ever for BestBuy. I needed a new windows computer for both graphics design and consultant work on the road. Initially, I was looking at both the lenovo 720 4k and dell xps. Both had excellent srgb color gamut, but lack the 10-keypad which I frequently used in my consulting work...not to mention they were twice the price than this computer. The hp envy and dell inspiron had the 10-key, but lacked in the screen srgb color department (they had below average srgb color gamut). Other than spending hundreds more for a thick gaming laptop to do both, ASUS came out with this 8th gen i5 q505ua that had those two main features that I needed. When this computer was on sale during the Christmas holidays for under $700 (on sale)...I took the risk (never owning an ASUS before). At the first, I thought this was just a decent computer knowing fully well the hdd was the bottle neck with this laptop. When I upgraded it with an ssd (525 MX300), it changed this laptop to an excellent performer! Everything load much quicker and renders faster with my adobe products as well as office and other software programs. Upgrading was simple. Clone the drive to an ssd with free software online, shutdown laptop, removed the bottom screws, take off cover, disconnected internal battery, replaced hdd with sdd, and just reassembled in reverse order. Windows 10 loaded in seconds without any changes within the BIOS. SCREEN: without calibration and straight out of the box, I would say it's not quite the srgb 100% they claim (still extremely good at this price range though). Screen is bright and vivid with quite accurate srgb colors. KEYBOARD: Better than the comparable hp and dell line but not quite macbook pro feel. I would say a little mushy but easy to type on without any real fatigue...plus it has a miniature 10 keypad which I got used to in minutes. BATTERY: I wouldn't say this has ultra-book longevity by any means, but I got a decent 4 hours at 75% brightness while working on graphic design. I'm assuming with a lighter load, it will last longer USB-C: I think it's a 2 channel which is fine with me. The transfer rate for data is average for an usb-c. USB 3.0: speed is average...again, enough transfer speed for most users. HDMI: Works great! I know my external monitors are 100% srgb (calibrated) and the asus q505ua laptop screen comes quite close out of the box. WIFI: The only real downside of this laptop. 2.4ghz range distance is great. 5ghz range is below average. I'm 25ft away from the router and on AC, it shows 1-2 bars...though wifi speed is still good within this limited range. TABLET-MODE: Only used it a few times in tablet mode...I used this mostly as a laptop and not a tablet. The power button is close to the volume button and I hit the power button a couple times by accident while in tablet mode. GAMING: Not really meant for any AAA games. With only an internal 620 card, its can run MS app games with easy, but not any real AAA title games. RELIABILITY: I've used this computer daily for the last 3 weeks for hours on end. Haven't really turned it off since I upgraded to the ssd. No issues right now. Finally, I got this computer for less than 2/3 the cost of it's competitors (hp envy and dell inspiron with lower quality screen srgb) and it had all the features I wanted. Upgrading to an 512 ssd would probably put it close to those prices...but this asus has a much better srgb screen (a must have for my line of work). All in all - a very solid and well performing laptop for work and design (with the sdd of course).
