Great upgrade - especially for the Ally

I have the Steamdeck too - which is a great solution…but I wanted a bit more powerful/ capable system tat I could essentially leave docked, runs Windows (for compatibility and performance without bloat or virtual hosting) and that gave to me the options out-of-box “day 1” to be upgraded very simply; the Ally fit my needs - and it’s been great in its performance, game compatibility, and ease of upgrade (bought 2tb ssd and the ROG rtx 4090 on day 1, and I leave the Ally mostly, only docked (w/ XG mobile pumping the graphics) to run a very clean and consistent performance experience (*I only play single player games though - because I’m an antisocial nerd’s nerd) of 4k @ 60hertz, w/ 60 locked frames (higher performance than those metrics is possible but less reliable and can be janky/ poorly tunable - I have found anyway…but your mileage may vary; just season your config preferences to taste) on a 15” 4k OLED touchscreen. I’ve added many heat sinks also, to keep it all cool and generally less angry. If you’re looking for a great portable, easily upgraded solution, I recommend the Ally over its 3 “big” competitors…currently anyway (as of Dec 15 2023). Cheers [1 less star, bc: crazy expensive, as of writing this]

The price for this really sucks a lot.. too expensive and the other ones they stopped selling them or they are marked up... secondly i love this because runs every game i have so perfect on my samsung 4k 60hz tv. Couldnt ask for anything better and most games run on maxed out 60hz... very few games run a little bit less but thats because i max out every setting and i dont use any frame gen or DLSS which i prefer not running it on any of those but it helps if you want the most FPS with DLSS balanced definitely boost the FPS with 20 or more FPS.. anyways overall satisfied and worth it in my case

So far so good. Runs everything plus is a great hub for all your connections. I have the X13 Tablet and I needed the slots.
It’s not louder than the computer itself even at full power but I wear headphones so I don’t know fully.
I use a Sony TV as a monitor and I can run all my games 120hz. Ultra settings, the computer gets hot but the 4090 can run it.
My only complaints are the one sided thick non bendable cord. It’s a pain in the butt because it really doesn’t bend or have much give.
The second complaint I have which is the biggest is the connector. It’s very fragile. I had to return one because the USB-C part got bent and I don’t know how. So be mindful when connecting and disconnecting and when traveling. Keep the protective plastic and put it on when not connected.
Overall it’s expensive but for me to have power on the go and the connectivity it gives, it was worth it.

extremely fast. scores 17100 timespy points. runs cyberpunk 2077 4k ray tracing at ultra with dlss 71,
runs robo cop at 4k max settings at 65 fps, the usb ports could be spaced further apart as headphone dongles clash, the pcie cable that runs the the rog ally is stiff and short so it makes it harder to set the orientation of the two devices on the table the way you want.

Fastest mobile GPU perfect match for Z13 ACRNM

This mobile external GPU turned an already fast Flow Z13 ACRNM tablet into a monster portable gaming rig, Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth Wukong maxed out, hit 80FPS as shown in pictures. Was able to get it for 25% off during sale, had been waiting to pull the trigger, but at that price, it was well worth it. Absolutely recommend if you're pairing it to any of the flow devices, haven't tried it with my ROG Ally yet, but im sure it's gonna be overkill for that device as well.

It died after 4 months of having it. I had to RMA it. Asus only gives a 1-Year warranty. For a product that cost 2k, I would have expected 2-4 years.

I love what this thing can turn the ROG Ally into. I was able to play games at high and ultra settings on 1440p, and the idea alone of an external GPU dock is brilliant.
What led me to return it were a couple of things I hope ASUS can fix with future iterations, and I may consider purchasing again.
1. Every time I went back to docked mode from portable, Nvidia GeForce no longer recognized the drivers, and in order to use their optimization for in-game settings feature, I had to uninstall the drivers, reinstall, restart the Ally… and then it worked. Now, the blame for this may not be entirely on the XG mobile, and some can be pointed at Nvidia, but the root cause is a lack of seamless transition between docked and portable, which is the whole point of this product, at least for me.
2. Temps while playing at high settings get too hot. The Ally stayed at 95°C the entire time I was playing. Even shifting down to medium/high settings only dropped the temp to around 85-87°C. Maybe the Ally can handle it, but it was more than I was comfortable with, especially considering the effect it would have long term on the device.
So for $2000, I ended up with a mid-end CPU, a high-end GPU that was throttled by the form factor, only 16GB of RAM, and not wanting to move it from docked or portable because I knew it would be a hassle going from either.

Let's get the elephant in the review out of the way up front. This thing is *expensive*. Ridiculously so. If you aren't concerned with having a portable PC, just get a desktop. Even a gaming laptop, although 4090 laptops are huge and I question their actual portability. Still though, shame on ASUS for leaving the end-user saddled with a hard-to-get and very pricy proprietary eGPU solution for the ROG Ally when Thunderbolt 3 or 4 would have been a much better option on the Ally and other ASUS systems, and would allow the consumer to have multiple (and cheaper) options.
But! If you want an ultra-portable PC with the option to have a semi-portable powerful gaming option to take with you (or something to leave at home while you grab-n-go with an ultra-portable PC that is still perfectly capable of running games on its own), a ROG Ally paired with a ROG XG eGPU is the way to go.
This thing is a performance beast - I'm currently running the just-released Starfield at 50 to 75+ FPS in Ultra mode. It's amazing. GTA 5 rarely leave 75 FPS (limited by my monitor). And it does work flawlessly in the ASUS ecosystem - I can adjust operability inside of Armoury Crate as well as use Nvidia graphic driver tools directly. The fan noise can be a bit loud though when operating at 90% - 100%.
I also love that it acts as a dock with 3 USB-A ports, a USB-C, an SD Card slot, and 1x HDMI & DisplayPort each. I essentially have a desktop setup that I can pack away into a small computer bag.
Pairing and unpairing with the Ally can be a bit of a hassle sometimes, but nothing a reboot or driver reset can't fix.
The cable could be a bit longer, and maybe a bit more flexible. It does limit where the Ally can be placed.
In short, I love the performance of the ROG XG eGPU, but I do dislike the cost and proprietary-ness of it.

Phenomenal Performance with the ROG Ally

Incredible performance out of the Ally with this. I am now using the Ally as my home console docked so I can play it on my 77 inch Samsung OLED. It plays games in 4K ultra with ray tracing with a steady 60FPS and above depending on how demanding the game is. I like having this so I don’t have to move my gaming PC upstairs to the media room and it lets me make more use of out the Ally than just for handheld gaming. Lots of positives to this, but it is quite expensive.

Used this with my ROG Ally and it was awesome. However, it is very loud and can get hot very fast. I definitely recommend this if you don’t care about the price tag. However, for this price, you may be better off buying a PC or a laptop.

Gives me excellent boost in performance with my ROG Ally. I played D4 with this and I went from 30-40 fps at max settings to 200+ fps. This thing is loud which I do not mind, but I could see others being annoyed by how loud it can get depending on the environment/scenario.

Honestly for a portable premium pc gaming setup this is my go to (I have it connected to my ROG ally.) In every game I play, from cyberpunk to ark to halo infinite it doesn’t drop a frame below 60 even at max settings. Would highly recommend though the price is a bit steep for an external gpu.

Beastly EGPU for Asus/ROG computers. I commute alot and it takes no effort to set this up. Pairs good with ROG ally. Good grahics booster to get better FPS. Has extra slots for monitor, ESSD, keyboard, and mouse. Downside is the jacked up $$ for it but worth it if you have the cash.

Performance is similar to a desktop 3090 except you get frame generation (using with a 2021 flow x13, must turn on turbo mode). Basically paying the early adopters tax. Thunderbolt 5 might drive the xg mobile prices down in the future? Excited to see what is next.
