Powerful laptop, just 'good' build quality

FIRST OF ALL, MAKE SURE YOU TELL BEST BUY TO PRICE MATCH THIS LAPTOP. Best Buy lists it as $1699 when you can order it for $1499 from every other website (Newegg, B&H, PC Richard, etc.). Reason to use Best Buy is their 15-day return policy, no restocking fee.
My first order of this laptop had a multitude of issues, including one side of the screen having a yellowish tint, sound occasionally cutting out and forcing a restart, internet browsing causing the machine to freeze, and waking up from sleep not turning on the monitor.
I decided to give the laptop another go by getting a free replacement using Best Buy's 15-day return/replace policy (no restocking fee, which is awesome), and the second laptop was much better, except for the same exact sleep issue (maybe a windows 10 software problem?) and one corner of the trackpad being attached down improperly. So my experience basically is that the quality control with this laptop is pretty poor compared to what I'm used to, which is Apple's macbooks.
Now for the pros and cons.
Pros:
-Lightning fast, can handle having many videos/browsers/applications open at once thanks to the quad-core i7 6700 hq processor. Running programs is a breeze.
-Dedicated graphics card is great for engineering applications and new games on lower graphical settings
-The laptop's temperature never gets any hotter than 'warm' even under heavy loads. I'm hoping that this means the hardware will last longer in the long run.
-Fan is not very loud
-Speakers are decent, could be louder and placed somewhere other than the bottom of the laptop. They also lack bass, so don't expect to be using this laptop's speakers for parties or anything (not that anybody would)
-Numerical keypad is awesome for Excel. It's uncommon for laptops to have this.
-Lots of ports
-Incredible price for its specifications. Similar specs as the highest end Macbook pro and the highest end Dell XPS 15 but for $1000 and $700 cheaper respectively.
-Comes with a USB to ethernet cable, cleaning cloth, an extra cable tie, and a laptop bag. These are things that you would have to buy separately with a Dell XPS or a macbook.
-4k screen looks better than real life
Cons:
-Screen wobbles a bit, not terribly noticeable unless you like to use the touchscreen which I don't
-Backlighting is only useful in pitch darkness. White lighting on silver keys makes the keyboard markings almost invisible with even the slightest daylight
-Glossy screen is pretty reflective. You'll have to avoid bright lights shining onto the monitor as reflections can be pretty distracting.
-Charging brick is HUGE and gets toasty. Not a huge deal but worthy of noting.
-Trackpad works well, but not close to the perfection of Apple's trackpads
-Keyboard seems to work fine for typing, but during gaming, not all the keys pressed were registered if you're pressing a whole bunch of keys in rapid succession. Not a huge issue because you can just get an external keyboard or mouse or gaming controller, but clearly this laptop is not meant for gaming.
-Most applications cannot handle 4k resolution at this time, and as a result, things do not scale well. An easy fix for this is to go into the settings and change the resolution to 1920x1080, which is still plenty high resolution.
-Lots of bloatware from ASUS. I ended up deleting a lot of apps that came with the laptop and then using a free app from the internet called '360 total security' to block other unnecessary programs from running in the background.
-Camera quality is pretty grainy and laggy. Good enough for video conferencing I guess.
-Thick bezels make the laptop pretty big compared to other 15" laptops, but the size also helps with cooling. Weigh your preferences.
Notes:
-Other reviews complained about how the keyboard is configured with the right shift key being small or the '0' on the keypad being smaller than most keypads, but I never had any problems. Maybe because I have small hands.
-Battery life is about 1.5 hours when gaming, roughly 6 hours when browsing web and playing videos.
In summary, I would recommend this laptop to engineers, data scientists, video editors, programmers, and light gamers. The keypad is great for Excel, the dedicated graphics card (gtx 960m) is enough to run most visual-intensive programs, and low price is unmatched by any other company selling laptops with the same specifications. However, you sacrifice build quality and quality control (not to say that the build quality is poor or anything. It just 'feels' cheaper than other premium laptops).

Fake pentile 4K screen: half the pixels of real 4K
Posted .

This laptop might look attractive on paper, but you are being deceived on one of its biggest selling points.
This laptop advertises a screen resolution of 4K UHD 3840x2160, but that isn't a complete truth. It's using what's called the RG/BW Pentile matrix, a cheap trick to achieve the ability to advertise as 3840x2160, without actually achieving the full detail of the resolution itself. A web search will tell you more about this, but that basically means even though the screen makes your computer render this resolution, your screen can't display all of that detail, because it's missing half of its pixels.
Lots of reviews talk about how nice the display is. Does it look nice? Sure. But here's some context: Most people buying new laptops today will be coming from the previous generations of laptops that almost all had very low quality 1366x768 TN displays. From those displays, yes, this is a huge upgrade, but so are all of the normal 1080p IPS displays you can get in just about any laptop half this price, many of which already score higher on color and contrast than this. Real 4K UHD 3840x2160 resolution is a huge upgrade from THIS display, and it is a disrespect to laptops that do truly achieve 4K (Dell XPS 15, Lenovo Yoga 710, Lenovo Y700, etc), that this one gets to advertise right along side them. It's not close to the tier of real 4K displays, and it's not even as good as the Macbook Pro Retina displays, or the 3K 2880x1620 displays available in some laptops, such as the ASUS UX51vz (an older version of this), Gigabyte P35x, and Lenovo Thinkpad T560.
You might compare this laptop to an alternative and think "Well, the display's not as good, but this one has an i7, 16GB of RAM, and a bigger SSD! The other laptop for this price doesn't have those, and if I want those in the other laptop I have to spend more. This one must be the better deal." First, evaluate what you really need. Most CPUs that come with most of today's laptops are more than enough for what most people do. Same with RAM, but the RAM as well as the SSD are easy to upgrade after-market, whereas you're pretty much stuck with this display: a difference you'll likely notice a lot more in the end.
If you want what this laptop is supposed to be, get the Dell XPS 15 or Lenovo Y700 UHD. Both offer the same GPU, but have honest true 3840x2160 displays. The Dell XPS 15 and Lenovo Y700 UHD are truly worthy choices at this price point, whereas the ASUS UX501 thrives on deceptive advertising. Don't buy it without fully knowing what it is and what it isn't, and always do your research when buying laptops that advertise super-high-resolution displays.

The Zenbook Pro replaced my 2009 MB Pro. So far after a month of heavy usage trying to break it, I am very impressed with performance. I can edit videos, play games, with no issues. 4K is good, and battery life seems okay as far as laptops go. I purchased from a competitor for extended warranty, but would buy again. I use an external Lacie drive for video editing, etc. Overall, a good all around laptop for the $$$.

Excellent laptop with amazing specs for the price. It is a bit bulkier and heavier than its direct competitors: Dell XPS 15 and Macbook Pro 15, but the battery life is good, the screen resolution is great (I wish it were less glossy and more bright), and the performance is spectacular. The keyboard is OK for the price range and the trackpad is great for a windows machine. This laptop demolishes any everyday productivity task and plays most light-moderate modern games on high graphics settings at Full HD resolution. Photo edits are also quick and fluid. I have not done any video editing so I cannot comment on that, but I am sure 4K edits should smooth with this machine.

Best laptop currently on the market for elite specs. Speakers could be louder and key lights could be more uniformly dispersed under keyboard however these are the ONLY slight flaws. Metallic body is beautiful, machine is powerful, sleek, relatively light. Considering price difference a much better option than dell xps, macbook pros, surface book models (comparable specs).

Tends to work better with touch screen than mouse pad. Pretty light weight for a full size laptop.
Would have liked a CD/DVD player in it.
If you have more than 10 internet search tabs open, it gets really sluggish, not what I expected from a So Called Gamers Laptop. But all in all I like it better than the Large touch screen HP I had.

I've been through a bunch of mid level laptops the last few years but finally decided to shell out a little bit more for a GOOD computer. This is just awesome. Love the SSD as it boots up within a couple of seconds and just runs real good the whole time. Very happy!

It is a great laptop - light weight, long lasting battery, nice backlit keyboard and touch screen. I bought XPS 15 but returned and bought this one and would definitely recommend this to others. This is my first ASUS laptop and I really liked it. Speakers could have been little more powerful.

I needed a computer to run a Lytro camera program, and use for work. This one does a great job, the graphics properties make photo editing a breeze, and no worries on slow down due to the large file size of each picture.
