Better than the AM05 in some ways, not all ways

This 3rd version of the Dyson heater is improved in ways, but when I got mine, I was not expecting it to be worse than the AM05 in ways. It is improved enough to be considered a better heater than the AM05, but only because it has more options. This AM09 model is slightly taller and heavier than the AM05. This AM09 has a timer, the AM05 does not. This AM09 has the jet flow design and broad airflow mode, the AM05 only had the one airflow mode, which to me seems like it was capable of moving air almost as far as the newer AM09. The AM09 remote has a cold and hot shot buttons, one press of the blue button, and it goes directly to fan setting, one press of the red button, and it goes directly to the last set temperature which it was heating the room at. The AM05 had to perform a really inconvenient process on the remote of pressing and holding the temperature up or down buttons to go from fan to heating modes, when the digital readout got down to 32 degrees, then it was on the fan only setting. This AM09 heater is quieter than the AM05 heater, but I have found that it achieves some of its improved quietness, from having a decreased airflow in the heater mode. The airflow in the fan only mode on both models, seems to be equivalent. I bought this Dyson AM09 to replace my AM05 as my living room heater, so it was a direct swap, and the AM05 is now a bathroom heater, yes my bathroom does have a ground fault power receptacle to prevent electrocution. Anyway, placed my new AAM09 in the same exact location as my AM05, this AM09 does not move quite as much air in heater mode, when compared to the AM05, but it is quieter, I just wish they would not have tried to achieve some of the improvement by decreasing the airflow in heating mode. Both the AM05 and the AM09 do have a lesser airflow in any fan speed setting when the heater is on, compared to just the fan setting, this is on purpose, to avoid so much airflow that it might cause a customer to think it is not putting out air that is hot enough. Dyson engineered their heaters, so that the heater setting has less air flow in any speed, to make the air output feel sufficiently hot on even the highest fan speed. Many customers must have complained that the Dyson AM05 was too loud, so they improved this AM09 and made it quieter mostly by improved air flow channels on the inside of the heater, but I can tell that some of the improved quietness when operating, is from it also having a decreased airflow in the heater mode. That was not even necessary at all, they effectively decreased the effective heating capability of this AM09, in efforts of trying to avoid customers complaining about it being loud. The fact that they made it quieter by way of improved airflow channels, was all that was needed. Having slightly decreased the airflow in heating mode, makes this newer AM09 less able to heat objects further away from the heater. Comparing the two heaters, the AM05 blows the heat further away from the heater, more effectively heating objects further away, but it is louder than the AM09.

Before buying this I read on a review "this is the bentley of space heaters" and I cannot agree more. The high price is purely for the look, aesthetics and safety that comes from having no blades or open heating element that can burn you, other than that it pretty much gets the job done like all the other space heaters I've owned. One additional benefit may be that it does not collect dust on the back side like other space heaters because it moves air through an open frame from dyson's proprietary "air multiplier technology." It is pricey and if all you're looking for is heating a space then other space heaters may be better suited for you. I would recommend this if you have toddlers or children because it is bladeless and does not heat up to such an extent that it could hurt a child. The device comes with two modes of air distribution "jet direct" and a wide open distribution. I like the jet direct air because it blows hot or cool air directly only you and you definitely feel comfortable without overheating. It is 1500W just like all other space heaters, but will save you money because you can set a temperature and it will automatically turn off when that temperature is reached to avoid overheating a space and wasting money.

I have a few Dyson products in my house and all I would say have been worth their money...except one and that one is the AM09 cooling and heating fan. This fan was purchased for its ability to both cool and heat vs having to buy two units...one for heating and one for cooling. The idea sounds great and is convenient, however, for its cost it does only an okay job. Owing it being a Dyson I kept it because of convenience and the belief that it would last. After the warranty expired, the unit no longer heats and gives an error code H2. I followed the online instructions to troubleshoot it, but that did not fix the problem. I called up Dyson for repairs and they told me sadly since it is past warranty they would not replace it for me. Furthermore when I inquired about having it repaired, they told me at this time there is no fix for the problem. For such an expensive fan, this is really disappointing. Please avoid these fans, because there is no servicing for the Dyson AM09 if it breaks down. I gave it 2 stars because of convenience.

First it's important to know that I'm an open-box, second-hand, thrift everything kind of person. I evaluate the cost of EVERYTHING and I hate waste. Our living room is part of a quasi-open floor plan at the back of the house which receives no sun and has a consistent draft from the fireplace (despite many efforts to insulate and cover draft vents). I splurged on the Dyson hot & cool and have ZERO regrets because 1 - the design is the safest in terms of kids and fire, 2 - it is indeed super quiet (the cool mode on high makes some expected fan noise but it does such a great job, who cares?!), 3 - no blades to clean, 4- lightweight and attractive to move around the house where needed and 5 - super efficient; it warms fast (even in an open room), it shuts off when it hits the target temp and it costs less to run than the whole house HVAC, so now I can leave the thermostat a couple of degrees cooler than usual. I debated the Pure model but didn't seem worth $300 more and $50 for filters. Got a $40 purifier off amazon that works beautifully! Also, I'm not sure I would have pulled the trigger if it wasn't on sale...$299 is just way more palatable than $450. I love it so far and the husband is digging it too, which says a lot given that we are so NOT the brand name splurging type!

Basically I bought this Dyson Fan Heater at full price, $449.99. As of today its $399.99. So obviously with any electronics, the price will go down. But if you have the patience to wait and purchase a nice piece of tech, I would. But if you need to get the job done, regardless of getting cooled in the summer or warm in the winter, I would buy cheaper separate items to get each individual needs fulfilled. Reason being, the fan feature pretty much does what any other tower fans do for a price range of $50 -$80. The Dyson has the timer function up to 9 hours, fan power from 1 to 10 (which in my opinion feels no different than the low, medium, high settings on any fans), revolving head, ability to tilt the head up or down. And so does any other regular tower fans. The only other option is this focused and dispersed fan mode. Essentially it allows the air to come directly to you (focused) or spreads the air in (dispersed mode). The focused mode, I can't complain much since it reaches up to about 15 feet away and does the job when I'm sleeping, but it will get faint if farther than that, obviously. Now the dispersed mode is what gets me. Maybe I'm not testing this right, but in fan mode it arcs out the wind like a cone. But you can't feel any sort of air in the middle. So if you have friends sitting on each ends of the couch and you're sitting in the middle, essentially you won't feel a single breeze. Only your friends on the right and left. But who knows, it might work better with the heater function, but I haven't dared to test it out in this summer heat. And I think the dispersed mode has something to do with how Dyson has the air coming out from the inner rims of the fan. But to sum it up, its a nice piece of tech that aesthetically is pleasing, but other than that, it just doesn't offer much in its price range.

Hi, this is Aimee with Dyson. I am happy to hear you're pleased with the design of the AM09 Fan Heater. The Fan does cool the room by pushing the air in the room and cooling the user. And the Heater provides jet focused heat to the user, to warm the room. When the AM09 is purchased new and from an authorized Dyson retailer, it will include a 2 year Dyson warranty. We would like to hear from you to ensure your AM09 is operating as intended. Please reach out to us by emailing AskDysonUS@Dyson.com, including your contact details. For a Dyson product this did not meet expectations especially for the price tag. The unit simply would not generate air that was cool enough to even make any sort of impact. This was actually back in May when we did have a few hot back to back days so I don't know if that plays into it or not. The unit was smaller then we thought (stands appx 1 1/2-2 feet off ground) and the remote had difficulty working unless the eye hit the receiver exactly. When your across a room and it's on the floor and your up higher it was difficult. It was hard to feel the air moving with it on oscillate or steady even with it tilted. And trust me....it wasn't quiet! When you have the unit on full blast it is quite loud. I have had 4 Dyson vacuums (I keep upgrading every few years) and right now have 2 newer models so I am accustomed to their loud motors but for a product advertised as quiet it just doesn't fit. It is a little quieter than a pedestal fan but compared to a ceiling fan I'd say they are about the same Db level. I would give the item another chance only if a huge substancial discount as I do think there could have been a product defect with my unit (the blue cool display came on only twice even though the temperature was set to 38 degrees)! It's an overpriced unit for cooling... as for heating I did not try.

Hi Amber, this is Christina with Dyson. Thank you for your review of your AM09. We greatly appreciate your continued support throughout the years . Some fan heaters claim to be cool air fans as well. However, many have low airflow and velocity that is not effective. The cooling function of the AM09 is engineered for personal use, rather than air conditioning the room. For heating, air is pulled over heating elements inside the loop amplifier before it is expelled, heating the room evenly. To use your AM09 as a fan, simply press the cooling button on the remote where as with our previous Hot+Cool AM05, you would have to set unit down to 32 degrees. The machine features an IR sensor on the base. To use the remote, simply point towards to the machine and ensure the sensor is exposed. Should you continue to experience an issue, we would value the opportunity to assist you. Please email us your contact information to: askdysonUS@dyson.com and we will be in touch with support. Best wishes, Christina. Dyson-EN_US

If I could, I would give zero stars. This was the my first and last Dyson product. Its not worth spending ridiculous amounts of money on an unreliable overpriced product which breaks down before the warranty expires. When my original Dyson fan had issues, they replaced it with the same product for free. Then I started having similar issues with the second fan. Since I had been traveling and could not contact them in time, the warranty had expired by 2 months when I got in touch with them. I do not have time, patience, or money (all of it was spent on buying the fan thinking I would not have to go through this since it was supposed to be an exceptional product) to travel for 3 hours to go to the service center for a product that I am not sure will function properly, even after a repair. I have a $20 heater from Walmart that has worked great for past 4 years. I really wish I would have gotten a second heater for the same price, instead of spending $500 on a unreliable product.

I have always been a huge Dyson fan (no pun intended). When the winter came (Texas) I wanted something that would put out heat but could be a cooling fan as well. Though the fan is very pricey, I would recommend it to anyone who could obviously afford it. I have multiple Dyson products ranging from 5 years of use to a few months (Dyson upright vacuum and v8 stick vacuum). Dyson makes high quality products and to me, you get what you pay for. When I don't want to run the furnace, I just turn the fan on heat and have it rotate so it pushes the hot air throughout the room. It's currently set up in my living room and does an awesome job heating the living room and connected dining room. With the fan being near my thermostat, the thermostat recognizes the temperature in the room, and won't kick the furnace on, which will make the rest of the house a little on the cool side. When I just want to push some of the cool air around in the main part of the house, I turn the cool on and does an awesome job circulating the air around. Over all, awesome product that does what it is supposed to do.

This product is extremely overpriced. It doesn't work any better or do anything different than less expensive heaters/fans. It DOES get hot on the top where the heat blows out. It works well, but is not silent. It sounds like the average fan. I own several different types of electric heaters that are far less expensive than this one and they work just as well or better. You're Paying For The Name And Unique Style If You Buy This Product. It was a gift to me, but I never would have spent that much money on it. The average $50-$100 electronic heater/fan looks different, but has all of the same features. The remote is a unnecessary extra for all heater/fans if you set the thermostat to the correct temperature. It is a good product that works well, but it's not worth the price considering the similar products available for much, much less.

Let's get this out of the way: Yes. It's expensive. You are definitely paying for the Dyson name. With that said, it really is well designed and performs flawlessly. Shop around and be patient (don't forget...Best Buy's price match policy is your friend). So why did I buy this product? First off, I'm a Dyson fan. I love their industrial design and this product is no exception. What isn't readily apparent when researching online is that the black and silver model features a really nice soft-touch exterior. All of the black plastic parts are soft to the touch and feel of quality. And then there's the performance: many conventional space heaters lack a true thermostat. I appreciate that the Dyson can be set to a desired temperature and then turns itself off when that temperature is reached. I also appreciate that it can be used year round. No need to put the AM09 in a closet during the summer months. Simply press the COOL button on the remote and you've got a blade-free Dyson fan to keep you comfortable. So if you're in the market for a nice-looking, effective space heater that can be used year round, take the plunge. I think you'll like it.

If you can afford it, this is the best heater you can buy. I needed this for my son's bedroom that our furnace doesn't reach very well. When I first plugged it in, it heated the room up in minutes. I love the thermostat so that it's not constantly running even when the room gets too hot. And I love that it can convert to a regular fan when it gets warmer. The design is also unbeatable. No fan blades for little fingers to get caught in, and it doesn't get very hot to the touch. It is also very compact so you can put it almost anywhere, and it looks cool. Another Dyson product that is a cut above the rest. That is, if you can afford it. I bought this heater during the Black Friday sale for $279.99. Would I pay $499.99 for it? Probably not. But I'm sure happy I bought it when it was on sale.

I was a little skeptical about buying this and spending this much money for a fan/heater. Unboxed it snapped on the base and cranked it up. We put it in a room that is about 7x10 or about 700 square feet, above our garage, a room that is always cold in the winter. I was really surprised how warm it got the room setting it at 72 degrees! I put the fan speed on 5 but I'm still playing around with it to dial it in. What can I say, its a bit expensive but it does a really , really good job at heating our room. It has an oscillation feature as well as a tilt function to get the air where you need it. the remote magnetically sits atop the unit. Also it is fairly quiet, it just depends on how high you have to set it or how cold the room is. It will cycle on and off once it gets to temp. Haven't messed with the fan yet. So far I'm very pleased with it!

After setting this up, I was concerned about the heating operation. Mine goes off and on (sometimes frequently). When it is cool enough it goes back on. Don't use it for white noise when heating as it stops and starts. I believe it is designed to do this. After having the unit for a few weeks, I tested one in a fest buy store to see if mine was defective. The only really difference was that in a big continuously temperature store, I could not get the unit to stop like mine does. I think it is just because of the temperature control in the store. I think mine is functioning as intended, just be aware of clicking at the ends of rotation, and stops and starts ruin the use if the device as a white noise generator in cold weather. The cooling fan function likely stays on unless you set the timer. Have fun because it is too expensive for a tight budget. Other heaters with timers are available cheaper.

The AM09 is an oscillating, remote-controlled, heater. Period. The heating elements, I believe, are on the sides of the oval 'output shaft' however when the heat is on the sides do not get hot. They are warm to the touch though not a safety concern. Like other remote-controlled heaters, this can also function as a general fan. This is labeled as a 'cooling' feature. Know, though, that there is no cooling mechanism, i.e. a compressor, to actually cool the air. Simply by circulating room-temperature air it will in general lower the degrees a bit -- just like any other fan. There are no blades present where the air outflows from. This is done from the rotating turbine in the base. It is very similar to an airplane turbine however the blades here are of different size (like a cone drill bit) and it directs the air up to the top.

Purchased a Dyson hot+cool fan. I live in a house with no insulation and no heater. When it's cold, its COLD. The inside of my house is sometimes colder than it is outside. I decided to try the Dyson, and to my surprise it's worth every penny. It heats up my entire room in less than 10min. My friends that come over all mention how quick it heats up the room. On the flip side of things, when I turn it on in the summer, it some how someway manages to constantly blow fresh/cool air. I really enjoy it

Pros: Even, consistent heat. Able to heat room quickly, depending on the mode selected. The diffuse mode seems to heat more evenly, but with a time trade-off. The narrow mode seems to achieve desired temperature more quickly, but for more localized space. Aesthetically, the Am09 is in a different class from other space heaters. Cons: Price. While I have confidence in Dyson technology, it is unclear how much better this space heater performs compared to other, cheaper models. I suspect that the Am09 will require less energy than other space heaters--but, admittedly, this is more confidence in the Dyson name/engineering than any evidence I could offer at this time. Overall, a good-to-excellent purchase if you are willing to accept the initial cost.

Pros: Very quiet, can use in the bedroom, has a simple timer Very nice design, does not look ugly like most conventional heaters and fans Provides decent adjustable air flow (wide or narrow) Operated with a remote, it attaches to the device, won't get lost, easy to use functionality Cons: Relatively simple for the price: hot /cold, more/less flow, oscillation, wide/narrow, timer, temp selection. Heaters at 1/5 of the price may have same functions, so you pay mainly for design and for low noise Less efficient than some conventional heaters and fans, both in terms of temperature and the airflow

It does have major techno-coolness (no pun intended), but it's somewhat louder than I would have thought. The ability to control speeds and narrow vs. wide air movement is nice, plus the back/forth movement (continuous) and up/down adjustment (fixed) are also good features. We haven't tried the heat yet, as it has been way too hot, nor have we used the timer feature. I guess you're mostly paying for the Dyson name, but as a practical air mover it really doesn't do that much better than conventional bladed fans. Sorry, Dyson, it's just not that great - especially for the money.

Streamlined air channels for reduced airflow turbulence make AM09 75% quieter than past models. It is the only fan heater with Jet Focus control to select focused mode to channel and direct a powerful jet of air for long-range personal heating or a wide projection that is non-buffeted. I wanted something that would heat and cool for a covered porch. I know it won't dramatically heat or cool but just wanted something better than a regular fan. Overall, the Dyson is good, but it has limitations - first, I feel that you have to be pretty close to it to feel much. Second, because it pulls air for the fan, you have to balance how high you want the fan speed (with heat on and the fan speed too high, it almost feels like air conditioning as it is pulling the cool air from behind it). Like I said, I like it overall, but probably asking too much for it in an outdoor area.

My hope when I paid so much for this was that it would act as a heater (which it does well) and as something to help cool a room during the summer (which it really doesn't). The heat part is awesome, but there is no cooling, the cool setting is just a fan that has adjustable power, oscillating, and you can choose the direction of the air (straight at you or a wide flow to the room). It looks nice but I could've bought a fan and an electric heater for a lot less money. We would have returned it but my wife threw away the box. If you have lots to spend, this is a cool looking fan and the heater is great, but don't have high expectations for it to cool you off any differently than any other fan.

Hi there. Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate your support. AM09 possesses Dyson’s latest development, Jet Focus technology. This new technology gives the ability to switch between fast whole room heating or long reach personal heating. So as well as being a fast fan heater to heat the room evenly, you can now choose focused mode for long-range powerful airflow or diffused mode to gently mix the surrounding air. The machine is equipped with 10 different speed settings that can be used for jet focus control. The new Dyson Hot + Cool™ fan heater has re-engineered airflow paths for reduced air turbulence, making it 75% quieter than its predecessor. It also has a new sleep timer feature, making it perfect for night time use. This can be set between 15 minutes and 9 hours. I hope the information provided was helpful. Should you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at: askdysonUS@dyson.com. We are happy to provide support. Best wishes, Christina. Dyson-EN_US
