Better than expected
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We purchased this washer and matching gas dryer (GTDP490GDWS) last week. Thankfully the units arrived undamaged and fit perfectly into their space. We had not done our research homework as is normally the case and when I read the online reviews, I had concerns. It appears they are unfounded. The washer is whisper quiet compared to the 20 y/o Maytag it replaced. The Stainless basket is large and DEEP! Spin cycles are effective too. Clothing washed quite well. We laundered a large down comforter and the machine accepted it without issue. It came out great too. Things to consider if you buy this washer: - Manaully set the water depth (eg: disregard the Auto Load feature). - Use the deep rinse setting for best results. All in all a good value. Time will tell on the reliability but for a $500 top loader We think it a smart purchase..

Disappointed
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was expecting and old fashioned washer based on the fact that it was a top loading washer with an agitator, however, I am so disappointed. To my dismay, this washer is indead a high efficiency model and is very stingy with water even on max.

Good Machine for price - Hybrid old style and HE
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall we like this washer. It has a very large capacity and overall operation is very good. This washer is kind of a hybrid between the new HE washers and the old style washers with an agitator. It is energy efficient and has water saver modes (though you can bypass and manually set water levels). We had a problem after about 2 months where the machine started to vibrate widly off balance with any size load. GE repair came out quickly and fixed quickly - this was caused by a counterweight block that was not fastned properly in the factory. There was a factory notice sent to repair to add lockwashers and sealant to those screw connections to ensure they do not come loose again. I was relieved it was not a more complicated issue and confident that the new hardware will keep that from happening again. It was good to see that the machine was easy to repair with front access and it is working like new. We wash everything in this machine including bedspreads and it works well.

Great Washer So Far
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been using my new GE washer for around a month & 1/2. I did read a lot of the reviews before making my purchase. We had a front loader that gave out and I wanted to go back to a top loader. I was torn between agitator / non agitator and decided on this model. So far so good. I know several reviews said that it is loud, but I think it's a very quiet machine. The wash cycles make a "swooshing" sound. I wouldn't say that the spin cycles are overly loud either. It's a washing machine. I expect some noise and this machine wasn't overly noisy. (My old front loader could be heard through out the house.) I would have given the machine 5 stars except for the water level. I know that there are new standards, but I still expect to be able to FILL the machine with water if I have a very large load. I now have to wash a larger number of smaller loads, which to me also wastes water. I do live in an area of the country without water restrictions, so maybe I'd feel differently if I lived in the west / southwest. (I live just outside of Chicago and Lake Michigan.) Overall, my clothes come out clean and that's what I expect out of a washer. I DO use HE detergent. I DO NOT use the water "auto sensing" option since pretty much all of the reviews said that option doesn't work well. The machine has lots of different settings that I'm still trying to figure out. Some reviews said that they've had a lot of repairs. Obviously after 90 days I have not, but will post again if something goes wrong. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase.

Mixed experience
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Positive: Quiet wash cycle, load auto-sensing is interesting feature, lots of settings I am still learning them, clothes are drier after spin compare to my old washer. Negative: Extremely loud and high vibration on spin, washer is definitely trying to self destruct or fly away. Installation crew did VERY poor job hooking it up, left a tangled mess of hoses and never even took out level, not sure they even had one.. Overall seem ok washer with poor tub balance system. BestBuy installation crew need training.

So far, so good
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The first thing I noticed about this washer is that it doesn't shake the house like the old one did during the spin cycle. The next thing I noticed is that it has enough cycles to wash different types of laundry (jeans, comforters, etc.) without having to customize the cycles and add way too much time. With my old washer, if you had a heavy duty load, by the time you pressed this button and that your laundry washed for 1.5 hours! No, thank you. While I agree with those who say that the laundry tends to be rather wrinkly due to the centrifugal force in the rinse cycle, if you take each piece and flap it out before putting in the dryer or on the line, most if not all the wrinkles should come right out.

Incredible Washer!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this dryer just yesterday and have so far washed two loads of clothes the require heavy duty cleaning, my husbands work clothes. I Absolutely love the prewash feature for his clothes because they get so dirty! This washer is super quiet compared to my old set also. I'm guessing those people that complained of it being noisy either a) had a bad one (it happens) b) it wasn't leveled or c) were expecting absolutely no noise (come on be realistic here). The washer does take longer to do a load on my old machine. However, this is not a complaint because it has a LOT more cycles to complete than before. Ive read reviews complaining of this but if you think logically, this is going to happen to get more wash features!. So far this pair is a home run for me and my family, but time will tell. If it changes for the worse, I will re-write my review or post a new review.

Took some getting used to, but now I love it!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was downsizing from a big front loader HE washer --that was more high trouble than efficient -- The clothes came out extremely wrinkled. This machine looks traditional on the outside, but inside it's all high tech ( in a good way). This machine works best if you load it, set the controls and walk away. That was the hardest part for me-- walking away and not fussing over the load. I was used to checking on the laundry -- adjusting the water level, adjusting the temperature etc. This machine works best if you load it, set the controls and WALK AWAY. Don't worry about the water level, just let the machine do it's job. If you feel that the water levels are too low, then set it to the largest load setting and do a smaller load. The washer is soooo quiet, it's amazing --at different cycles it make cute puppy barking noises--but it's still very quiet. My clothes are clean --and not wrinkled. The machine went on sale after I bought it, and Best Buy, refunded the difference!!

Awesome Washing Machine
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My first GE washer purchase, and I could not be happier! This is the quietest washer I have ever had. I am so happy with all the cycle choices and different options you have to choose from. I didnt know if I would need 16 cycles, but I am learning to do laundry in a new and better way becaue of it! The high speed spin is awesome and so very quiet. I had to walk over to the washer a few times and listen just to make sure it was working! My washer is located right outside of my TV room, but you sure wouldnt be able to tell it! The clothes dry so quickly, because the spin cycle is so very efficient. I am a very frugal shopper, and wanted to get the MOST for my money! With this washer, I have no doubt I did just that! You cant go wrong with this machine!!!!

Straght up a good machine
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So far, so good. My only complaint which I'm trying to resolve now is the tubs capacity does not fill over 2/3rds no matter the setting. I understand this may be a common issue so I am on the phone with GE to try and get it taken care of. But other than that, this is a very unusually quiet machine and does a good job. Installation for me was also straight up and easy. No problems.

awesome washer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I LOVE this washing machine. It is a man's washing machine that cleans big and does huge loads. I lived in an apartment for 2 years before this and had to use the laundrymat during that time. I'm so glad to have a massive machine that can clean large loads. Easily does loads 2.5 times as big as the machines at the laundrymat. This machine sits near my family room with my large screen TV and it is so quiet that I can barely tell it is on while I watch TV. Yet it also has a hand wash setting for things like Robert Graham and Bugatchi shirts. Uses very little water but you can override that to use more water if you care more about clean clothes than the environment. I've washed expensive shirts, jackets, bed sheets and even bed comforters in this. They all come out clean and no damage. I saw earlier that someone said it damaged their clothes but I have seen none of that. The only glitch with this guy is that it is so deep that my petite girlfriend can barely reach the bottom of the tub. It's not a problem but it you are 5 feet tall or shorter it could be. I'm over 6 ft and no problem for me.

So far, so good...I like it!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This washer is a great combination between old school agitator and semi-high efficiency. Paid $540 on sale. When it agitates, it is scary quiet. It is more energy efficient than the old washers of 10 years ago, but it still gives you PLENTY of water to cover your clothes and agitate them properly. The auto water filling sensor is great, and has covered my clothes with PLENTY of water to wash them. You can also manually select the water level. The barrel is quite large, and it spins slowly when filling with water to mix the detergent if you pour it in last. I like the auto soak option at the beginning, and this machine is GREAT for delicates...you can soak them, barely agitate them, then slow spin them. The quick wash cycle is 40 min long, while the other wash cycles are about 50 min long. The quick wash seems to work just fine for my dirty clothes. If this machine holds up over time, then it will be extremely pleased. So far, so good! 4.5 stars!!!

Great so far but noisy
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I just received this washer replacing an He that I had initially purchased. I decided to go with this standard washer instead. I like that it gives the option use to the clothes sensor or not. It fits lots of clothes. One wash takes longer than my previous 15 yr old washer but not as long as He. It washes well so far. Everything washes well. It is noisy but you can ignore it. If you are sensitive to noise then it may not be the right washer for you. So far my whites, comforter and towels have been washed well and it does not get the towels out of balance. Other than that this is a great investment and it is a great quality.

So far, so good.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It is hard to find a regular top loader these days. This actually combines the best of both worlds. It can sense the water needed or you can set the water level yourself. It was just what I was looking for. It has cycles for everything and the clothes come out so dry that they need very little time in the dryer. Right now, my old dryer is fine but I will probably replace it with the matching dryer in the future. The delivery men from Best Buy were just awesome. All in all, a good experience.

Everything you want in a washer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had the product for 6 months now so I can review this with solid experience. The washer has every possible combination/feature you can think of covering every possible washing situation. The tub is roomy enough to accommodate a large comforter and the load size auto-detect does a nice job of preventing water overuse. Definately a solid porduct choice.

Spend the extra $150
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We made the mistake of buying the low-end Amana first and after two failed attempts getting a decent Amana, upgraded to this washer. It doesn't put a lot of water in for the amount of clothes it will hold, designed that way I'm sure, but I'd like to see more water in it. It was so quiet first time I heard it agitate, I honestly thought something was wrong with it! The lid doesn't lock (thankfully) so you can add to it without having to go through a whole process. It also fills up FAST! The extra $150 you'll spend is completely worth it, don't even consider the Amana over this one!! OH word to the wise...go to your local store to buy any product, returns and credits have been a NIGHTMARE through BB online

Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Our washer just went out and it was estimated around 250-315 to fix it. I said heck with that, I'll buy a brand new one for a bit more! Found this gem on sale for 410$ down from 600$. I decided to take the plunge and I'm glad I did. My wife and I have 2 children and 1 on the way. Having a reliable washer is essential and I have a good feeling about this one. Plus, I use GE equipment at work and it performs very well. This unit has a massive tub, a good amount of settings, and an auto balance suspension system. I love that it levels itself too! No more getting out the level and adjusting the stupid feet! You must take into account that we have not had this unit for long but it seems like a good buy so far.

Good Washer but noisy
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This washer does a great job at washing the clothes, I had the old model until it gave out on us. The only complaint I have is that the rinse cycle is super loud, I've only had it for about 10 days and when it starts the rinse cycle I tell my husband that the airplane is taking off. But overall I would recommend this washer.

GE Never Again!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The GE top load washer is so bad that GE had NO right to sell such a piece of junk. It does a terrible job cleaning. It is ruining our clothes!. Can't use softner or it will ruin the clothes even more. The agitator has holes at the bottom, gets clothes stuck around it, from one hole to another that it is almost impossible to remove the clothes. The clothes wrap so tight that the fins on the agitator are ripping off! We called GE and they sent out a service person, only to give us a new agitator and a sorry but that is the way it cleans. We are looking to get another washer, even though this is less than a year old and works like new....because like new does not clean the clothes.

Posted .Hello gtwo - this is Nancy at GE. We are sorry to hear that your new washer is not working properly. This is certainly not the outcome we would expect to hear and we apologize for your inconvenience. First, if you are using liquid softener, please make certain you use the "Deep Water Rinse" option as well. If the clothes are getting wrapped around the agitator during the spin, then we recommend using the slow spin cycles such as the Casuals / Easy Care cycle, or you may want to try filling the washer with less clothing. We hope these suggestions help! If not, please contact GE Factory Service at 1-800-432-2737 for assistance. Thanks for providing your feedback!
