The GE Opal 2 is my family’s favorite nugget ice maker. We’ve owned 4-5 different models and brands, but this Opal 2 is very user friendly and the ice is absolutely crunchable!

When this ice makee works, it's amazing. The problem is it will periodically start making a loud noise that requires us to unplug the unit. Anyone else experience this with theirs?
To ensure the continued operation of your Opal you must follow the directions for sanitizing and descaling the Opal ice maker as described in the Owner's Manual. Also, ensure you have a minimum of 4" of air clearance on all sides and back of the unit. The air filter should be cleaned every two months at minimum and periodically clean the vents on the unit with a hand vacuum or the attachments for your vacuum cleaner. If you continue to have concerns, please send us (GE Appliances) a private message on one of our social channels (Facebook, Instagram) with your contact information, model and serial numbers and a copy of your review so we can research your situation. -Vikki@GEAppliances

This is hands down the best nugget ice maker we have used! We had a Euhomy before that was horrible. Switched to the Opal and havent had a single issue!

I recently replaced the Opal Ice Maker with this new model, and overall, it's been a decent addition to my kitchen. The ice it produces is great—soft, chewable nugget ice, which is exactly what I wanted. It’s perfect for cocktails and soft drinks.
The machine is also relatively compact and doesn’t take up too much counter space, which I appreciate. The setup was easy, and it started making ice pretty quickly after plugging it in.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, the ice maker is a bit noisy, especially when it's running on full cycle. It’s not super disruptive, but it’s noticeable, especially in a quiet room. Additionally, while it does make ice relatively quickly, it doesn’t always produce a large batch at once, so you might find yourself needing to reload it sooner than expected if you’re hosting a lot of people.
Also, the unit can be a little tricky to clean, and I’ve had to run a few cleaning cycles to ensure it's in good shape.
Pros:
Makes excellent nugget ice
Compact and easy to set up
Quick ice production
Cons:
Noisy when running
Small water reservoir
Can be tricky to clean
All in all, the Opal Ice Maker works well for smaller households or occasional use, but if you need a high-volume ice maker or one that’s completely silent, you might want to look elsewhere.
Lastly, I'd HIGHLY recommend paying for the extended warranty if you are not a Total Tech member. I've had to replace this unit about once a year & that would have not been possible without the warranty.

This machine consistently produces the soft, chewable nugget ice everyone loves. After I clean and empty it, it gets back to making ice quickly, which is a huge plus. It also sends cleaning reminders, which helps with regular maintenance. The only downside is that it can get a little noisy during operation, but it’s easy to turn off either using the power button on the unit or through the app on your phone. Overall, it’s a great addition to any kitchen or office setup

We bought this specific unit for the color matching in our kitchen. I personally can't stand typical counter appliance colors like black or stainless steel. Plus we have a few other GE appliances in our kitchen that have performed well. I would like to start by saying, the ice is perfect and delicious and exactly what we wanted. The price was really high though and I kinda regret spending so much because of the following... It's so slow making ice, if we make a few glasses of ice at dinner it takes forever to start making more and recover from the loss. Also- it doesn't have a simple water line hookup like the cheaper ones on Amazon have. They want me to buy an additional ugly side tank to make this massive machine bigger? For me personally the high price not including that water line hookup makes me regret my purchase. Lastly, the machine needing to be cleaned weekly is ridiculous. I get sanitize message on the machine literally every week, I assume it's based off the time it runs, which doesn't seem very efficient that it runs that much in a single week. Would I buy it again...ehhh, probably not. I would probably go with the Amazon machine that has a water line hookup for less money. Sure this machine is beautiful, but the price of beauty came with a sacrifice.

Owned for almost 2 months and have used nearly every single day. Great quality ice. Love chewing on it. Easy to use and maintain. I like how there's an app where I can schedule times/days for this to function. Good gor early work days. It is pricey, but I do like this better than other types of ice makers that I've used before. I've read elsewhere that some people have had issue with pump system when a filter is installed within the ice maker. So we just use filtered zerowater (since our primary source of water anyways) instead with the screen insert. No problems.
Thank you for sharing your experience with your Opal ice maker! We're thrilled it’s meeting your expectations for quality and ease of use, especially with the convenience of scheduling through the SmartHQ app.

By far, the most awesome small appliance I have ever bought myself. I don't know how I got by without it.
I did a bunch of research before I decided to go with the opal 2.0 Ultra v this ice maker is top of the line, do not bother to buy a knockoff.
I know there are a lot of bed reviews concerning build up, hard water, known defects. While inconvenient, if you buy the geek squad protection, you will never have to buy an ice maker again. The first one I bought started having issues after 10 months. Though it was still under manufacturer warranty, he was giving me a hard time about servicing the unit I went to best buy, and because I bought the 2vyear protection plan, they bypassed the manufacturer, said it's not a serviceable item, and gave me a gift card with what I paid for it back. I bought another, as well as the warranty and it will be here tomorrow.
Hands down, best buy has the best warranty on the market.

Have had this unit running for several moths. NO ISSUES whatsoever. It’s much quieter than the original Opal and the air intake is in the back with a reusable air filter screen. My old one would collect dust and stopped working until I figured that bit out. This makes ice so fast. It is a joy. I use the app to turn it on remotely and it tells you to sanitize every couple of days. We use reverse osmosis water so no scale build up. We sanitize 1 time a month. Like nugget ice? Buy this. Any bad reviews are from older units. This is great

I was really excited when I received this product but I will say the water drains really quick and the maintenance was a lot... and I mean A LOT because we did it every 3 days. That is with using distilled water. But for what it's worth the ice texture is 10/10. You could literally bite into the ice without hurting your teeth.
We're sorry to hear you're not satisfied with the level of maintenance required to maintain proper operation of your Opal. We will be sure to share your feedback with the proper teams. Thanks for providing your honest feedback, and we're confident that with regular maintenance, your Opal will serve you well for many years.

When I first opened and taken it out the box, I couldnt figure out how to set it up and why it was just pooring the water instead of making ice.. I just needed to be patient. Ive had the ice maker for about a month now and its better than my previous ice maker

We love the soft ice, however the deal breaker is that the sanitizing is being asked about every 4-5 days and the descaling about 7-10 days. I would like know if this is normal, according to the manual the descaling hooks be about once a month, maybe I got a bad one? It’s a tedious process as it has to sit with vinegar for about 16 hours. It’s very expensive to give this much hassle.
Keeping the Opal ice maker and side tank accessory clean ensures you have plenty of fresh tasting ice. The Opal ice maker will indicate when it is time to clean the unit using the display ring around the round button on the front. When the display ring is solid yellow, it is ready to be cleaned. Cleaning instructions vary depending on which model you own.Descaling should be performed every 2-3 weeks, depending on the hardness of water used. We would suggest searching on our website "Opal Ice Maker - Cleaning and Descaling" to get more information and step by step instuctions. This information can also be found in your manual on the website (Page 7). Dianna@GE Profile
