Great for making an older HDTV a smart TV

If you bought an HDTV before they became "smart," then Chromecast is the perfect solution to update your TV. It is easy to use and sync with a tablet or phone. If you factor in the free 2-month Hulu plus trial, the cost is cut in half. Be aware that the Chromecast needs to be plugged in to an outlet. The ads always show it without the outlet cord. Not really a big deal unless you are really picky about the appearance of your TV/entertainment center.

Great Low Cost Streaming Media Player Choice

The list of apps has grown exponentially since Chromecast's release. The apps are consistently updated and bugs are often patched. Casting an app or webpage is extremely easy and I've found that casting webpage is much more stable on a Chromecast then Apple's Airplay. I'd recommend a Chromecast before most other media players. I would recommend a Roku 3 if you're looking for a stand alone player with an incredibly long list of apps.

Smart way to make a 'dumb' tv smart

Smart TV's are a waste of money because of their clunky on-board software that sometimes never get updated. Unfortunately it is difficult to find non-smart tv's nowadays. But if you happen to have of these and would like to experience a similar experience, Chromecast is a cheap and smart way to get there. It only takes up one HDMI port and USB (or a wall socket) for power and you're set to stream to it from your phone or laptop.

    Fun... at first

I received the chromecast plug-in for Christmas from my husband. I spent several hours figuring out what I could... and what I couldn't do with it. I don't remember every detail, but I know that my default (Silverlight) player software isn't compatible with it... it's necessary to switch the default to another player (flash, maybe?) Then... a couple days later, we were given the equipment for Roku. For my purposes, Roku works better than the Chromecast, and, accordingly, I haven't used the Chromecast since. The only function that you have with the Chromecast that you don't with the Roku is the ability to project whatever is on your computer screen onto your television. Even that is of almost no value to me, and the process isn't exactly straightforward, either, since it's necessary to go into beta functionality. I'm really glad we have Roku! I wouldn't recommend the chromecast to anyone for the purposes of playing movies from a laptop. However, if someone had a need to project their computer screen, I would tell them about it.

    Great idea, but slightly misleading...

This does not work off of you cell carrier data plan. You MUST have a WIFI network available. The small print on the bottom of the box does state this, but it is slightly misleading the way that it is written. It is all a matter of how you read it. Other than that, I think it's great. You can watch Netflix, or cast whatever is on you desktop, to any TV (that has an HDMI input) in your house. Even if you are using your cell phone or tablet to cast Netflix for example (while on WIFI), you can still make or take phone calls or texts, browse the net or play games, and it will not interrupt Netflix. Overall, pretty cool, just wish it would work off of your cell carriers data.

Google chromecast is an easy way for streaming media and apps to your tv for a cheaper price, via Wi-Fi, the product includes a usb cable to either connect to tv as a power source, or it has its external power connector for the wall, this device takes a few minutes to get setup and ready for use, it is compatible with most smartphones, tablets or computers running ios, android, or windows

You can't beat the Google Chromecast price, especially with all the credits and free trials you get. The device's streaming speed of videos from my phone is very fast. However, when streaming directly from a computer's browser, I noticed that the videos were very slow since the content is being sent over the network instead of just sending the link to your Chromecast.

Works very well with streaming content from your Android device or Chrome browser. There is limited app support which limits what you can view from the device. Unless you have Netflix or Hulu you will not find much use for this device. Until there is more app support I would suggest a Roku device.

i use this little device often for work, play, and travel. i have one in each room of my house, even works well to watch movies while working on two other screens in my home office, at work it helps have a wall of real time staticstics for our scrum development and field analytics reports. is there anything this little device wont do, even allows me to stream movies to the tv in hotels so i can avoid ppv movies on the go

Please make sure that the TV connected to this device has more than one HDMI port. If your TV only has one port you need to by a switch (not expensive only about $35). Also make sure that our computer or tablet has the most recent updates or the device will not work. Finally, if using an Apple router the router name can only be alpha-numeric. These are all very small things and once you get past them the device works great.

My chromecast helped me navigate my cord-cutting exploration phase. This item is basically "plug & play", which i'm sure that most people will appreciate. It works well with my wifi connection even at moderate speeds. I have only experienced minimal lag, but in most cases the streaming/casting picture quality is up to par. Great overall buy and gift option.

I think everybody knows that google chromecast is very good for viewing what you have in your tablet to your tv or receiver. I put it in a yamaha receiver and works perfectly. Only reason for not giving 5 stars is the dependence to have a tablet to view content. It would be very useful if it could have a remote control to use directly with no tablet need

I bought two of these for different TV's. This works best when you just want to cast whats on your iphone tablet or laptop and want to free it do something else with the your other device. I have it hooked up from computer to another monitor and I can watch TV or something else while doing my work. You have to have great internet or the lag time will be annoying.

The Chromecast is an excellent alternative to built-in blu-ray/smart tv apps or more expensive dedicated streaming device. It plugs right into the back of your tv or A/V Receiver and draws power from a USB slot (or from the included AC charger). Use your phone or tablet to push web pages or stream shows on your tv quickly and in high fidelity. The phone's UI is more efficient than any Blu-Ray or Smart TV app that I've experienced.
