Bought 4 of these. 2 packs are cheaper, but expensive. Proprietary cord. I had to cut mine to make 2 of them longer. The cord has 3 conductors inside, positive, negative, and a tiny little yellow “signal” wire. My house was hard wired with RG 6 wire that had a Siamese 2 wire power conductor attached. For a run less than 75 feet, I was able to use the center conductor of the RG6 And soldered the signal wire at both ends of the splice, and used the Siamese power for positive and negative. Past 75 feet I think the signal wire had too large of capacitance and shut the camera down, or gave inconsistent results, but below about 75 feet it worked. What I don’t understand is why they would have a signal wire that must communicate with the power supply, so that means the cord that comes with this thing can’t be custom installed, and leaves the average joe a big chunk of extra wire to deal with, or a wire that’s too short? The wall wart is rather large, and if installed in a covered outside box takes up the entire outlet. Data hog, check with your internet provider to see how they will handle charges for data upload. I can’t quote the numbers, but the monthly data upload per camera is huge. That being said, I get 400 download, and 40 upload. I have a total of 4 cameras, and the doorbell, and a Speedtest reveals about a 5 Mbps hit on upload speeds only with all cameras at highest res, so that’s not really an issue for me. As for the nest as a system, not once has something happened at a camera or doorbell when the lag time actually allowed me to have a conversation with the system. For example, the ups or mail guy rings the button, by the time you get the notification that someone is there. They are long gone. The exception to this is that the google home screen I have sitting in the kitchen interfaces through my own Wi-Fi, and it is much faster without the system lag. But using a phone or iPad, there is too much lag. So I can only see things that already happened. The notifications give all sorts of false events, and the face/person identification only works at short range. I have a camera on my patio and another on my driveway that we’re giving me hundreds of notifications of “your camera sees a person” per day. Well yes, my wife was watering plants, or returning from the grocery store. I also get “your camera sees a face it doesn’t recognize” at 3am, which will freak you out when you live in the country, only to find out it was another spider building his web over the IR of the camera (they are constantly doing that). So, what is good? Wi-Fi range is outstanding, camera picture quality is great in good light, but becomes very laggy and lots of ghost pixels when there is motion in darkness. Additionally, that I don’t have to maintain and manage a DVR with the system, I find the monthly data fee for the cameras is reasonable. I subscribe to 5 days, figure by then anything that happens I will have had time to store to my camera roll. It’s also easy to send video clips to your device, so you can post stuff to the web easily (salesman lurking, weird car in cul de sac, etc). The microphones and speakers on the cameras are excellent. One of my cameras is mounted in a birdhouse up in a tree overlooking my cul de sac. You can have a casual conversation with someone in the street (my neighborhood is quiet) because both the speaker and mike are excellent. But with the leg reported earlier, you would have to be physically watching your device to se that person coming, otherwise they are already gone. I did yell at a guy that was letting his dog crap on my lawn, and it scared the crap out of him when my deep voice magically appeared 25 feet up in a tree. (Might add the Wi-Fi signal in that tree is traveling about 150 feet from my router inside my house made of concrete, so yes, that part of the camera is pretty impressive) I might suggest you would have better facial and motion performance if you don’t mount these too high, but at the same time I don’t want then down low where they can be accessed without a ladder. Hope this helps.

      Hi Mark,

Thanks so much for sharing your feedback with us. We truly appreciate your detailed review of Google Nest cameras.

We'd like to share a couple of things to help resolve some of the issues.
Nest Cam IQ Outdoor uses the standard Type-C USB cable which comes with the CC wire to help provide stable power to your camera. As for the power adapter, we'll gladly pass your feedback along to the related team as we're always looking for ways to improve our products and services.

Here are some steps that we recommend you to try for the video delays you highlighted :
      1. If you have a lot of open apps on your phone, they can slow down its overall performance. Try closing some apps, including the Nest app, and then re-open only the Nest app to view your video.
      2. If the delay is 10 seconds or more and it happens after you’ve been watching video in the Nest app for a long time, re-load your camera’s feed: navigate back to the Nest app’s home screen and tap on your camera again to refresh the connection.
      3. The video can be delayed if your camera, phone, tablet or computer is connected to a Wi-Fi extender, which adds extra relay time to any device that’s using it. If you’re using an extender in your home, connect your camera directly to your Wi-Fi router to help reduce the delay:
      a. from the Nest app home screen, tap Settings
      b. then select Home info and
      c. then choose Home Wi-Fi help and then
      d. Select your camera and then Update settings.
      e. Be sure to pick your Wi-Fi router and not the extender.

Alerts and notifications for your camera can be affected by changes in the light level, and shadows moving across the frame like when a cloud moves in front of the sun. This also includes other movements within the camera's field of view like trees or bushes swaying.
We recommend trying out the steps below to try to see if they can fix the issue:
      1. Change the Activity Zones on your camera. You can delete your existing Activity Zone and create a new one in any area within your camera's field of view. Just make sure that none of the zones you create overlap.
      2. Change the angle of your camera and account for the lighting in the surrounding.
      3. Restart your Camera.

You can reach out to us by visiting Google Nest Support page if any of the issues you mentioned keeps happening. We'd be more than happy to assist you further. Nest

    Amazing Security Video Camera

This is an amazing security video camera. I originally purchased the Ring battery-operated camera for my front porch, but I live in the city and it constantly picked up folks walking their dogs or my neighbor’s on their front porch. Even though the Ring only calls for one battery, I purchased an additional one. I’m the period of one day, I had so many notifications that one battery had used 35%. I think the Ring would work better in a suburban or country setting. The main reason I purchased the Nest IQ was because, with a $6 a month subscription to Nest Aware, you set up “Activity Zones,” where you are only notify when a person is in them. The IQ also has the ability to distinguish be tween a dog barking, people talking, a human being, loud sounds, and other motions. It works in algorithms, and when someone approaches and steps on my porch - zooms in and follows them. Even though the camera perpetually tracks other things, I only get the notifications I want - a person on my my porch. It is expensive ($400 pretax), but I think every penny; especially for folks who live in high-traffic and pedestrian areas. It’s night vision is remarkable. The most-challenging aspect about installation is it has to be plugged in to an interior socket. So, in my case, I had to drill a hole through my exterior brick wall, cut a channel in one of my interior walls, drywall, mud, and paint. But again, I think it’s worth it. Finally, it took me a minute to understand how to operate it. The FAQs and instructions online were a bit confusing and not easy for to me understand on a pretty sophisticated product. However, when I contacted Nest support, they spoke to me over the phone and answered all my questions.

Easy to set up and I am very happy with this purchase. These cameras were a little bigger then others that I have seen but the quality will not disappoint. I am so happy with my Nest cameras and the quality as these cameras are no cheep but worth every penny. I was lucky to purchase them on sale at Best Buy. For me being able to plug them into a outlet (no battery) and letting me have 24 / 7 recording is just what I wanted. You will have to pay for storage / playback options as without them your options are very limited.

We now have three cams setup around our house and are so much more aware of what is going on around us I shudder to think what we have missed in the 10 years we've been in this house and didn't have any cameras. The quality is crisp, though you can choose to tone that down if necessary. We have had excellent experience with the people recognition. The biggest seller for this one was two weeks ago, we had wildfires in our area, the neighborhood was on level 2 evacuation. While we decided to wait it out there was a group of individuals going around and scoping out houses. Our cameras caught them before they were even able to get near a door or window. It looks like they saw the camera and decided to leave as they were gone before we even had a chance to make it downstairs. A few nights later they hit a neighborhood a few streets over and in that case actually made it into some of the houses. I will never live without security cameras at this point and these are perfect for what we need.

While we love Nest products..these cameras have the clearest sharpest video...I wish we could of had options on cord length for them. I contacted Nest..nothing but 25ft cords...we have outside outlets in the eaves so there is no need to drill through the house and wire them inside. Hoping for a solve soon...

IQ Did not detect person, Standard Nest Cam did

I have installed this new Nest IQ Camera side-by-side to my current Nest Outdoor cam to compare them for a few days. I wanted to upgrade for two reasons: 1 - Higher resolution (ability to zoom in on faces) 2 - Bright LED IQ ring to illuminate on detection to deter criminals Unfortunately, I was disappointed on both. #1 My old camera detected and marked a person walking the perimeter of my driveway. A motion light was activated which is a help to trigger the camera notification. The new IQ did not notice this person or mark it on the timeline. The older Nest Outdoor did. When I scanned to the same time stamp on the IQ cam video, I could see the person. What is odd is the person looked translucent, like a ghost, on the higher resolution IQ. It also did not mark the motion or the loud sound (but it is clearly audible) when he knocked over a can either, but the older Nest camera did indicate both on the time line. See pictures for a comparison. It is even more creepy on video. #2 Google has disabled the ability to control the lighted LED ring functionality for privacy concerns. Now the LED ring only illuminates in setup modes, not when detecting motion or by pulsing during voice activation. This is a feature the was removed via an update. Police say the best deterrent is for criminals to see the camera and know they are working/recording. If that is important to you, as it was for me, this makes the IQ pointless. At $600+ for two, the IQ cameras are going back. I'll buy two more of the Outdoor Nest Cameras at $300 instead to put in additional locations. It's a shame that Google pulled the light ring feature. It should obviously be a software setting that the user can enable and customize. I really wanted to love these cameras even at the very high price. NOTE: There are lots of other features and pro/con but they are well discussed and documented. These were the two reasons for my specific circumstance, so the IQ upgrade did not work out for me.

OMG. I did not believe it until I tested it. I have 3 acres and an entry gate where I wanted a camera. I bought the Nest IQ Outdoor thinking that if it did not have the WiFi range to connect, I'd return it. Well I mounted it on a tripod at my gate which is 300+ feet from my house and WiFi router to test. I am using a Linksys MR9000 with a Velop node plugged in to an outside outlet. Fantastic! Works fine at full resolution. No issues. Continuous streaming. Not just video clips. My only other alternative was cellular. I bought a nice 2x2 post from Home Depot and mounted the camera with a brown skin I purchased elsewhere. Looks professional. I could not be happier. I purchased 4 Nest IQ Outdoor and 2 indoor cameras.

Once upon a time it was easy and painless to configure a nest product. That time has come to an abrupt and shocking end. Should you decide you really want to buy a few of these here's my recommendation -- clear your schedule and make sure you have your next three meals already prepared because you're going to be busy. Also consider having your favorite beverage nearby to help you with through the stress and frustration you're about to experience because my goodness you're patience is about to be put to the test. Lastly, be prepared for extremely friendly but confused tech support that will be confused about the error messages you're likely to receive at least one of which they've never heard of and have no information what it's even means. I added the screenshot of the mysterious error so you know once you've entered the hellscape I went through. The product itself seems solid and so far now that they're configured the picture quality seems great. I'm not going to tell you but to buy them because maybe my experience is an outlier. Pro tip though: if you how an installer, get them setup BEFORE the installation date.

    Too many false alarms

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased these 7 months ago and overall they are ok but I wouldn't buy them again if I knew then what I know now. 1st problem is bandwidth. Yes they are 4K sensors but unless you have gig speed internet to your house you will not be viewing or recording in 4k. Don't get me wrong, the quality isn't bad but it isn't 4k either. 2nd problem (even more annoying than bandwidth) is the alerts. If you have your camera pointed anywhere near a tree or the shadows of a tree, expect to get motion alerts every 10-15 minutes during the day and then car headlights and reflections of headlights send motion alerts all night. I live on a main street with a tree over my driveway and on sunny days I get an alert with every breeze and I live in the windy city... I got the best of both worlds here which makes motion alerts pretty useless. There are so many you just ignore them and eventually turn them off. On the plus side the person detection is pretty good and you have to use that for your motion but that only comes with a paid subscription. Also be aware that everything is recorded in the cloud on Nest servers. If your internet goes out, so do your cameras. It hasn't been a big issue but wish there was an option to set up a local server to record to.

    Great camera, great app

This Nest IQ camera performs well in the day time and at night, and integrates great with the Nest app. The app does a nice job of notifying my phone and smart watch that it sensed activity or a person. My watch shows an image of what the camera saw. We have noticed a 15 second delay in the notifications, but a delay is maybe to be expected. The facial recognition feature is very cool, in that you can designate familar faces in the app (reducing notifications for known people). The internal lens pans and zooms toward the sensed motion. The camera comes with a 30-day free trial of Nest Aware, which can store 10 or 30 days of video in the cloud, but will cost $15 (10 day) or $55 (30 day) a month to have that feature. There is a break if you pay for a year. Not sure if that is worth the cost on an already high-priced camera. We will review the standard non-subscription features in a month and decide then. Regarding installation, the mount for the camera securely hides the cable, unlike th previous Nest outdoor camera. The cable intself requires a 1/2 inch hole, vs. 7/8 inch on the previous camera. The screws and anchors provided require odd sized drill bits (3/32 and 7/32). The latter caused me some grief when trying to buy a masonary bit. The cable is 25 feet and there is an indoor power adapter, about 2 inches in diameter and 1 inch deep. It is white and makes for a clean looking installation inside. One camera is mounted on brick and was challenging to fish the cable through the house barrier behind the brick, but it worked for a hidden cable installation. The other camera is mounted under an eave on Hardy board. That required additional wood backing as the Hardy board was not thick enough to properly secure the camera. Soon we will add the Nest Hello when available to supplement this system. Meanwhile, we will enjoy our new Nest IQ cameras.

Great Video Quality - And Reliable!

I purchased one of these cameras to watch our back yard, and I have been impressed with the video quality of the device. Setup was straight forward with the Nest app (Make sure you set up the QR code or grab a picture of the setup code on the device before installing). Once set up with the app, I was able to configure video quality settings, motion zones, and more. The field of view is pretty wide with this camera, but without the fisheye effect that some competitors might have. Because this is a wired camera, you do not need to worry about climbing up to change the batteries. When it comes to overall video quality, it do not think anyone else can come close to this camera, especially when it comes to night vision (I will attach a daytime and night time picture for comparison).

Bought this along with a Nest doorbell. Installed doorbell easily but could not get the camera to install. Had to call customer support. Turns out I had to uninstall the doorbell and then install the camera first and the doorbell after the camera is working - they don't talk together right unless you install them in the right order but when you do it in the right order the installation was easy. It was also easy to physically install - just needed a screwdriver and mounted it close enough to an electrical outlet to run the plug over to it (it has 25' of wire so fairly easy to get to a plug). Note that it has to be within range of your WiFi or it will not work. Once installed, the picture is excellent when viewed through a phone, tablet or computer. You can zoom in and pan around and also talk through it. Night vision is black and white but is fairly clear, though you can't see as far as during the day. There is a slight delay from 'real time' to the picture display but it's minimal. We did not opt to pay the monthly fee for online storage, etc. so can't customize the alerts very much but that's not a big issue for us. It still will alert us when it detects motion or if a person comes in the view or if it hears a sound. It sends alerts to our phone even when we're away from home, which is neat. The only negative mark I give it is it sometimes takes a while (15-30 seconds or more) for the video to connect when you open the app to view when no alert has been given.

Let’s begin - I have the Nest Hello doorbell system (very impressive, too!) so it should have been enough of a sign to continue buying Nest products, but I chose to “try out something else..”...my bad. I decided to use the Arlo Pro 2 system from Netgear - their “no need to direct wire” concept sold me on them (plus I have the Orbi system, which is great). Needless to say, I had to replace Arlo with Nest, Arlo’s battery life isn’t 100% reliable - back to Nest, although this is an expensive product plus you have a very reasonable monitoring service - you really get what you pay for: top of the line camera. First, the overall packing and set-up instructions, couldn’t be better. Second, expect the same level of video and operation the Hello doorbell camera has but better - install was straightforward and the IQ comes with everything you need to hard-wire to an AC plug, Arlo needs accessories which aren’t easy to get plus it means extra expenses. Functionality, this is where Nest completely destroys the competition; being able to get effective alerts, quickly review any day, or time of day is a great feature plus face recognition will give you peace of mind knowing who’s around your property. I got the 5-day service, $50 for the Hello and $30 for the IQ...a year!! Very practical and easy to use features, assigning particular zones to monitor is super convenient; Arlo is cumbersome to check, excessive alerts and a complicated way of accessing its app. Overall, Nest is a great platform (I also have their smart thermostats) integrates very well, one place. Arlo isn’t a bad product but it definitely has its own opportunities and a very particular user market. If you’re looking for the best, IQ outdoor system is your best bet!

You get what you pay for . . . The Next Cam Outdoor IQ is an excellent choice for high quality video with a great zoom. Works very well at night as it does during the day light. This Nest IQ camera performs well in the day time and at night, and integrates great with the Nest app. I used to have D-Link camera, they were harrible and I do mean harrible vs horrible. They never connect when you need them to and lose connection all of the time, stay away from D-Link camera and save yourself money and get the Nest brand camera's. The higher the price the better the picture, keep that in mind as I mentioned, "you get what you pay for". I want to get two more of these babies for the front of the Manor, the existing two I have are in the back of the Manor covering the entire back yard with an excellent quality picture day/night. I can even see when animals come through the property. The only thing I wish was better was the costs of the Nest recording option, but the motion and alerts are okay for now until I take out the subscription to record. If you are looking for quality images with zoom stay with the higher priced Nest camera's, the IQ indoor and outdoor are the ones to get. Trust me I tried all of them. I highly recommend Nest for everyone.
