The HP Smart Tank 5000 is a mixed bag as far as printers go. Having used the HP Smart Tank 7602 and having experience with other HP printers, I was a bit disappointed by this newest addition to the Smart Tank lineup.
It does live up to its "smart tank" name as it utilizes the same ink wells as previous models. However, it also seems to have less ink efficiency than older, more robust models - although both this model and the 7602 boast "up to two years" of ink, the 5000 specs out at an estimated ~6000 black or color pages before needing a top up while the 7602 can go up to ~8000 color pages. That's a very noticeable difference, and one that might be excusable if the 5000 produced better prints, but it doesn't (in my humble opinion).
In many ways, the 5000 seems a step-down. It lacks the same robust, feature-rich paper tray that older, larger models had and gives up both ease-of-use in the form of allowing the user to go longer between paper refills, but also gives up automatic duplex printing for manual — a change that is sorely felt to this user, especially when printing multi-page documents as it requires the user to wait until one side of the print job is complete before manually inserting it into the paper tray to print on the other side. This may not be as much of a bother if the 5000 didn't also print slower than older models; HP specs the 5000 at up to 10ppm for black and white printing and up to 5ppm for color printing, versus the 7602 with an already not-impressive up to 15ppm for black and white printing and 9ppm for color printing. In my testing, I averaged about 24 seconds for printing documents per page and a whopping 1:46 minutes for photo printing. You can thus imagine the frustration in duplex printing longer documents, which necessitates that the user wait a considerable length of time nannying the printer until it completes the first side of the print job and then waiting even more time to complete the second half.
Again, all of this might be more understandable if the 5000 produced greater print quality than older models. It sadly doesn't. Prints look less crisp and less rich, which is saying something since in my testing of the 7602, photo printing was average at best. Even document printing seems to suffer, with blacks looking faded even at the highest quality print settings. It also struggles with contrast, tending to "crush" darker areas, losing detail and clarity. Fortunately, when not comparing side-by-side to other printers, the 5000 seems to produce "good enough" prints. I would still not recommend this print to anybody requiring greater print clarity or color accuracy; this printer might work for presentation slide printing or reports, but you would be missing out on quite a lot if you relied on it for printing family photos or art prints.
As for the perks, this printer is smaller than the 7602 and fits more comfortably on a desk. It retains the sleek, professional vibe of older models, and given its aim for families and WFM professionals, this printer would fit in well with those settings as it's unobtrusive and almost boringly plain. Setup is straightforward for the most part, though I had some issues with alignment that I had never experienced in a printer to date. The HP Smart app's setup instructions and the manual gave conflicting guidance on how to orient the alignment page for scanning, which resulted in a very creepily glitched test page once alignment was finished. Luckily that was easily fixed, but I did find it frustrating. I should also note that with the exception of the paper tray, the whole printer feels fairly solid. I do worry that the flap for the printer tray might come off with repeated use, though.
To expound upon unboxing and setup, the unboxing experience is good. Unfortunately, there is a lot of plastic packaging, from the individually wrapped ink bottles to the plastic bag covering the printer, and HP doesn't provide instructions or guidance on how to recycle empty ink bottles or even if they are recyclable through home recycling programs. Given that you end up with three empty bottles after setup, it would've been nice to have been told plainly how to recycle or reuse them for the sake of sustainability. I also found it odd that it doesn't include wired capability for connecting to computers; most users aren't likely to want it or to care, and there is something to be said for the cleanliness and minimalism in fewer cables to manage...but having a wired connection can be convenient in times when internet connectivity isn't a given, and it can make troubleshooting a little easier.
Overall, the 5000 seems to me to be a downgrade as far as Smart Tanks go but it may work better for people willing to sacrifice certain creature comforts and print quality for a smaller, lighter printer. I, however, find it difficult to recommend given that it cuts corners in areas where previous models were already hurting. For most users who have no point of reference, this is an upgrade from small, throwaway cartridge inkjets which seem to devour ink...but having tried previous models, I feel the 5000 to be a little lacking.
I've included a comparison of a photo print from PhotoDisc, Inc. with prints from the 5000 and the 7602 for reference, scanned via the 5000. Of course, comparing a digital image to a printed and scanned one will lean heavily in favor of the digital image, but you can see both Smart Tank models struggle with saturation and color accuracy. When looking at prints in person, you can easily see differences to the source image in certain colors like pinks and reds, and these differences are more pronounced in the 5000 in my opinion. Colors are also less saturated and the whole print "pops" less than it should. Again, for casual photo printing, this is a great printer, but for anybody needing or wanting more color accuracy or better print quality, this printer is not it.
PROS:
+ smaller footprint, lighter, and easier to move (though I don't recommend moving a printer with liquid ink!)
+ sleek look, good build quality
+ replaceable print heads, so you can easily swap them out if needed
+ fairly easy setup
+ decent scan quality, comparable to older models
CONS:
- mediocre print quality (poor color accuracy, lacks vibrancy. even documents suffer a bit)
- even slower printing speeds than older models
- downgraded paper tray = less paper capacity = have to refill printer paper more often
- manual duplex printing vs automatic duplex printing in older models
- a bit loud; you wouldn't want to use this in a home at night near bedrooms/etc
OVERALL RATING: 3.5/5 rounded up to 4/5 in part because I do feel this is an upgrade to those cheapo inkjets that cost less than the replacement ink. I am aware I am being a bit harsh on this printer. In part, that's due to being pretty pleased with previous models and seeing those favorite features taken away with this iteration. To be as impartial as I can, this is a decent printer for the right person...but it's a miss for me.

Short version: Excellent small/compact sized printer/scanner/copier that works exceedingly well in a home or home office environment. Designed without the ADF, it seems that is the only feature that I might want that it doesn't have. Print quality is excellent and great speed. Not quite as quiet as some larger printers, but "quiet mode" seems to actually help.
Read further for more detail:
This HP Smart Tank printer is no exception to most all the other HP printers (all-in-ones) I've had over the last couple decades. I have a larger Smart Tank printer that has an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) on it, and this slightly more compact version is every bit as good as the larger one, just without the ADF. For this particular printer, no ADF means that I can put this closer to a wall or back of a cabinet. Usually, the ADF doesn't allow you to open the scanner lid if up against a wall. This saves me a good 4" or so behind the printer. Combine this with the small size and it takes up less real estate on my side desk.
I took some photos while unboxing and setting up. The handles to remove the printer from the box are a big help and the poly bag kept me from having to pick off little beads of styrofoam. Directions were simple to follow and I had no issues. The ink is sealed in plastic, but actually easy to tear open. No knife or scissors involved.
It's a little un-nerving to turn the ink bottles upside down to fill the ink tanks, but I didn't have even the slightest drip or drop when emptying them. A "pro" tip is that you can fill the tanks two at a time if you start with the Black and Magenta, then the Cyan and Yellow. (see photo of Cyan/Yellow emptying) The ink bottles seem to empty completely and are ready for recycling after replacing the cap (save the caps to re-seal the bottles). There is a little plastic seal with a gasket that stays in the bottle, but as you can see the bottle is empty. The black ink will have a little left in it, so be sure to keep that cap and seal it back up.
The rest of the setup is guided, whether using the HP Smart Print app or manual. As long as you have your network SSID and password, you're good-to-go. Registration is simple, and be sure to print an info page so you have all the printer info.
If you have the need to copy/scan a lot of documents, you may want to consider the model just like this, but with the ADF. It also has a paper tray under the printer that keeps the new paper flat and protected from dust and anything else like that.
If you mostly print and only occasionally need to scan/copy items, this is a great printer for that. It also has the smart scan options for copying IDs. It automatically prints the ID front and back on one single-sided sheet of paper. It's slick.

----- SUMMARY -----
Verdict:
The HP Smart Tank 5000 is a great all-in-one printer for home use. It has a sleek design, easy setup, and good print quality. The ink efficiency is a standout feature, and the mobile printing is a convenient bonus. The only downsides are that it's a bit slow when printing in color and doesn't have automatic double-sided printing. Overall, I would recommend the HP Smart Tank 5000 to anyone looking for a reliable and affordable printer.
Pros:
- Easy to setup and use
- Sleek, space-saving design
- Low running costs
- Great print quality
- Supports printing, copying, and scanning
- Offers mobile printing
Cons:
- Slow when printing in color
- 100-sheet paper tray might be small for some users
- Doesn’t have automatic double-sided printing
----- DETAILS -----
Setup:
I appreciated the clear instructions that guided me through the setup process. You can opt for guided setup with the HP Smart app, which I’d recommend. It was easy to connect the HP Smart Tank 5000 to my home Wi-Fi network and print my first page in only a few minutes.
Design:
At 17.11 x 6.19 x 14.23 inches, the Smart Tank 5000 has a low profile and doesn’t take up much space. It has a sleek and appealing design, which looks nice in my home office. It’s a little wider than other printers I’ve owned, but not by much. Though the 100-sheet paper tray is more than enough for me, frequent or large-volume printing will require you to reload the tray often. Along with a simple display, there are a few on-device controls. The buttons include color copy, black copy, ID copy, Wi-Fi, information, resume, and cancel. Although using the HP Smart app is quite convenient, I like having these on-device buttons available for quick and easy printing jobs.
Print Quality:
I’m quite impressed with both the black and color print quality. The black is dark which makes reading text easy. Even very small or unique fonts are legible. As for color, I’m happy with how vibrant and crisp graphics are. Prints of photos leave a little to be desired, but I’d recommend a printer designed specifically for photo printing if that’s your primary use case. You'll need to be patient when printing in color because it's a bit slow, but I haven't found that to be a dealbreaker. For everyday tasks, the Smart Tank 5000 is a solid performer.
Ink Efficiency:
The standout feature of the Smart Tank 5000 is its ink efficiency. HP claims the included ink could last you up to two years. Their estimate is based on 200 pages per month of usage. The actual lifespan of the provided ink will vary based on the content of printed pages and other factors, but the claim still speaks to the Smart Tank 5000’s low cost per page. I’ve been using this printer a lot already and have noticed the cost savings. With my previous inkjet printer, I’d have already been ordering more ink, but I haven’t even used a fourth of the ink provided with the Smart Tank 5000. Though cheaper printers on the market might provide comparable quality, if you print enough to offset the higher initial cost of the Smart Tank 5000, you should quickly notice the savings.
Mobile Printing:
The HP Smart app offers you the ability to print from a mobile device. I’m pleased with the user-friendly app interface that allows you to print, scan, and copy from anywhere. The additional features like ink supply levels are nice to have readily available as well.

Ink tanks are a plus, but the printer is average

HP used to be my go to printer brand but over the years the price of their ink cartridges started to soar out of control. They always made decent printers, but it just became way too expensive to maintain them. That's why I was intrigued by them finally realizing that the large ink tank printers are the way people want to print. I have a “tank” printer from another manufacturer that works so consistently and so easily that I've never had a problem with it in over two years.
Now, that being said, I was eager to try out the HP Smart Tank 5000. At first glance, it has a sleek and simple look. Clean edges, recessed illuminated buttons and a relatively small footprint. On the back you'll find a power cord input and a USB-B port (standard for connecting to a computer). There is no RJ45 jack to hard wire it to a network, you need to connect to your WiFi to have network connectivity. On the front, you have your ink tanks and a fold out paper catch for output pages. The top has the scanner bed and control panel, which includes a small display. The display is used to show you the status of the printer and any error codes that get generated. The illuminated buttons are brightly backlit and colorful. They include the power button, black copy, color copy, ID copy, WiFi, information, resume and cancel buttons. There's also an “attention” light and a scanner lid open light. The arrangement is nicely organized and intuitive.
Setting up the printer is somewhat of a process. I will say, this machine took a pretty long time to set up. After removing all the tape and cardboard, you need to add the ink, install the print heads and load the paper. All of that was easy and straight forward but what I'm not crazy about is that this printer needs way more interaction with HP than a printer should normally need. Just during the setup process alone I was asked on multiple occasions to give HP permission to collect data and usage information. They give you a link that is supposed to explain more about how HP uses the data they collect, but the link didn't open up anything at all. I don't mind installing an app that helps me use the printer and save documents I scan, but this seems to go way beyond that point. The setup process guided me to the Microsoft store to download the HP Smart app. It works as a central location to help you use your printer. Most of the basic print settings can still be found under Printers and Scanners (on Windows), which is where I'm used to looking at these settings, but now the HP Smart app shows them as well. If you load the app on your phone or tablet you can also print from those devices as well as your computers.
So, as far as the printers abilities are concerned, it prints at an average speed. For what I print, that's not a big problem, just an observation. The quality of the prints are clear and accurate. Printing photos in Max DPI with borderless printing and HP Real Life Technologies selected (these are found in the HP Smart app on my Windows machine) gave me pretty good results although I felt the colors in the printed photos could have been richer and deeper. They weren't bad, just average. To scan anything, you must download and use the HP Smart app. Scanning was very easy and you can choose where you want to save your document. Documents are clear and accurate and you can scan at up to 1200dpi. The ink tanks are very similar to other printer brands I've used, and this is finally a huge step in the right direction. People don't want to spend $80 on a set of new print cartridges HP, it's high time you realized that. I can only assume similar ink usage from my other ink tank printer and since the bottles are the same size, I would expect to get a year or more out of this set of bottles. The black bottle does give you more ink than will fit in the tank, so you will have leftover black ink for later on. The other bottles' contents all fit into each of the tanks. Filling the tanks is super easy and is one of the reasons that ink tank printers are so popular. Unless you put the wrong color ink in one of the tanks (there is actually nothing preventing you from doing this), you won't have any trouble. Other ink tank printer brands key the different colored ink bottles so that they can only be used in the correct tank. This is not the case on the HP Smart Tank.
For the most part, this printer performs well enough, however you may find that there are a few downsides to it too. First of all, you cannot print full duplex automatically. It will not flip the page over for you and print on the other side as well. It does offer a “manual” duplex mode where you print one side, then have to run over and actually flip the page manually and reload it into the print tray to print the back side of the page. Honestly, I thought we were done with that kind of thing a long time ago. I haven't encountered that on a new printer in a long time. Especially one at this price. The second annoyance is the tiny little paper tray. It stores the paper vertically at the rear of the printer and claims a capacity of 100 sheets. I believe they are being very optimistic with that number. So the ink capacity went way up, but the paper storage went way down. I'm somewhat on the fence with this printer. Without question the ink tank printers are the way to go, but the small paper tray with the absence of full duplex printing combined with the complaints I have about usage and information permissions put me about right in the middle. All in all, an average performing printer with ink tanks that will save you money in the long run.

What a great little tank printer. One of the biggest issues I have is sometimes I don't print a lot and ink cartridges always dry up. this is a awesome solution to that problem. the set was easy and very easy instructions. First, I had to download the HP Smart App. It found the printer after I plugged it in and helped me step by step in setting it up from getting my Wi-Fi set up on it and help in installing the print heads and putting in the ink in the wells. then it completed print head alignments. The HP smart app helps you do everything with this printer. you can scan and print or scan and make copies, print photos, and print everything else as well. You can even print to this printer direct from your phone if necessary. I have scanned documents with it and color documents as well. the printing looks awesome as some more expensive printers. I also tried my hand at printing color pictures on glossy picture paper, they also came out great. I couldn't be happier. I did notice however every timr I printed a picture it also sent a second blank page with it. I do not know it that is by design to protect the picture I printed or not i just put it back there it goes. I would say that any one looking to get out of having to buy ink cartridges should get an ink tank printer. im sold on this one.

As someone with an IT background, this HP Smart Tank 5000 gives me hope for the future of home printers. Many people remember buying ink cartridges and feeling totally disappointed when needing to print something 2 months after installing a new cartridge. Putting the ink supply inside a print head was never a stellar idea as we've seen, but these smart tanks are wonderful. The ink and the print head are separate products, meaning each can be replaced and serviced on their own. It's a wonderful idea and the main attraction of this printer. And with the included ink, you can expect to print 6000 black or color pages before needing a refill.
The printer is mostly controlled by the HP Smart app (iOS, Android, Windows Store, etc), which I appreciate. Navigating through menus on a printer is troublesome, but HP Smart works great. It makes me glad that this device doesn't have a menu screen! Instead, we have a few simple buttons and various status symbols for printer notifications. The device connects to your network via WiFi, but for those who appreciate a wired connection like I do, there is also a USB-B connector on the printer so you can connect it directly to a PC.
The print quality on this is a dramatic upgrade for anyone who's using a standard ~$100 or below home printer from two or three years ago. I've noticed that the colors and color accuracy on my print/scan jobs has increased by a noticeable amount, meaning I actually plan to use these functions more often.
I've attached a color scan from HP's included manual for this product. I also did a PDF scan of the same page using HP Smart from my PC. I've attached some quick photos for comparison. Please feel free to take a look at those if you're curious to compare.
Overall, I'm a big fan of this printer. I expect to be using the built-in features far more than any other consumer grade printer I've used, and with the massive print capacity this machine has, I'll be printing pages for a long time before I buy my next bottle of Smart Tank ink.

The HP Smart Tank 5000 all in one printer is an excellent alternative to conventional printers that require changing expensive ink cartridges that don’t seem to hold enough ink. The Smart Tank holds enough ink to print for up to two years. With the HP Smart printer Windows application, you can manage all the printer’s functions such as scanning, copying, printing, printer settings and printer support.
The printer itself is fairly basic in terms of controls. The control panel consists of a small display, and buttons for power, open lid light, color copy, black copy, ID copy, WIFI, Information, Resume and cancel. These control all the basic functions of the printer, however using the HP Smart App provides more control.
When you open the printer box, you will find the printer, four bottles of ink, color and black pinheads. Following the instructions for the set up is very straightforward and easy. You have two options when setting up the printer. One is using the included printed instructions and the other is to use the HP Smart app. Both are simple and direct. When adding the printer ink, HP’s ink bottles fit snuggly to the ink tanks and fill the tanks without spilling any ink. I was impressed at how easy and clean the process was.
Print quality is very good for documents whether black or color prints. Speed isn’t going to set any records, but it’s fast enough for most people. As for pictures they are very good with vivid colors and clean clear details. I was very surprised at the clarity of the photo prints.
One area that is lacking is the ability to automatically do double sided prints. If you choose to do a double-sided print, the printer prompts you to take the printed page and place it back in the feeder to print the second side. Not a huge deal, but if you do large double-sided prints, it could be a time-consuming exercise.
I have to say that for a basic printer with an ink reservoir of two years, this exceeded my expectations and I think most people for general use would be very happy with this printer. If you are using this for a more professional office use, you may want to move up to the next level of HP Tank printers with the ability to do double sided printing without having to manually place the first side back into the feeder to complete the process. That said, this is a very strong argument for moving from cartridge printing to reservoir printing.

The HP Smart Tank 5100 is a clean looking printer with refillable tanks, instead of your tradition cartridges. Wanted to get a tank system, the waste builds up, plus the set we got in our current printer runs us over $150. With this system it looks to be around $65 for the CMYK ink bottles.
In the box you get the printer itself, 31 CMY, 32XL B, printheads for Black and Tri-Color, power plus some paperwork. The box claims this to include two years worth of ink, so I am curios to see how long this lasts, we print pretty light, with some sporadic larger prints here and there. But $65 every couple of years is nice. The 32XL Black is more than enough to fill the tank, it was a little weird removing it as I was afraid of spilling some ink, however when I took it off the fill port, it didn't leak anything. All of the colors fill their respected tanks, It guides you how to fill the tank and install the printheads and add paper in the setup on the app.
Setup wasn't too bad, used my phone and downloaded the HP Smart Print App, went through the prompts until it got to the point with adding a printer. Since I didn't add the printer to WiFi, I was able to locate the printer via Bluetooth in the app and add the WiFi there. Once connected it ran through the setup and did a print head and scanner alignment.
We had received some quotes for a reno that family was doing, so we used the printer to share these with them. They had two 6 page and one 11 page quote for options. When printing one of them a couple pages only half printed, we reselected these pages and they printer fine the second time. The print is a little slower than your traditional ink printer, but I am curious if this has something to do with how the printhead pulls from the tanks. Not a big deal, the part I should have paid attention to was that this printer isn't auto double sided. Replacing a $100 11 year old printer that had this feature, I would have thought that this had it, as it would also save more paper easier than having to manually load the paper back in and making sure you do it right. If you want auto double sided prints, get the 6000 series smart tank printer.
Outside of the one quirk to me, and the half prints I experienced, all prints after have worked and it is always available so far. I am curious to see with it going to sleep over time that it keeps the IP and is readily available to print, otherwise I may need to set it up to static. But I am likely being iffy with my decade old printer. But if you don't care about auto double sided, grab this, otherwise go with the next series up.

The HP Smart Tank 5000 is great in a lot of ways, but connecting it to a new Wi-Fi system is definitely not one of them. The print quality is solid, the ink lasts forever, and it’s a nice all-in-one unit—but every time I have to switch networks, it turns into a whole tedious, frustrating process. I used to take it to work when I needed to print things, but after dealing with the setup hassles more than once, I finally just stopped bothering. Now I leave it at home and make sure I send whatever I need to print before I leave work.
Wi-Fi Direct works, but it’s hit-or-miss and can be a little iffy when you’re in a hurry. When it connects, it prints fine, but getting it to actually pair smoothly isn’t always guaranteed. That part definitely needs improvement.
Aside from the connection issues, the printer itself does a good job. It’s quiet, it scans well, and having up to two years of ink included is a huge benefit. If you plan to keep it in one place and rarely change networks, it’s a great value. But if you move it around or switch Wi-Fi often, just be prepared for some annoying setup battles.

I’ll admit that I was dreading unboxing and installing my new HP Smart Tank wireless all-in-one printer. But my fears were completely unfounded. Both the setup guide and the step by step instructions on the HP app were crystal clear even for a technophobe like me. It only took about 15 minutes to unbox the printer, fill the ink tanks, install the printheads and align them using the alignment page. It was also easy to configure my iPhone and iPad to print on the new printer.
I’ve tested the scanning function, copy function, and printed in both color and black and white with no issues whatsoever. The control panel is easy to read and understand.
I also like that the ink tanks are filled with bottles so no more plastic ink cartridges filling our landfills. The two criticisms I have are that it doesn’t do two-sided printing and it is a bit slow when printing in color so I wouldn’t want to use it in an office setting. But it’s perfect for home use.
If you’re looking for a decent priced all in one printer, color printer from a trusted brand, this is the one for you!

Nice printer. Easy to setup. The ink bottles makes it easy. Good print quality. Easy to use with mobile phone. A little bit loud but not too concerned about that.

We switched from our HP cartridge printer that was draining our bank account because of how quickly they emptied, to this smart tank.
Set up is easy at first - do pay attention that you are putting the ink color in the correct place. (No other comment on how we know that!) It took 2 days of frustration to get the printer, computer, and WiFi to sync. So frustrating we almost returned it.
Print quality is good on paper and card stock. If you plan on trying to print photos, this is probably not the printer you want. The color ink was still wet and wiped off the photo paper 3 days after printing. Maybe HP has their own photo paper that works better?
Scans well, but is slooowwww, and has to be done through the compute. If your printer and computer aren’t next to each other and you have a large document to scan, you’ll get your exercise in.
Overall, we’re mostly happy with this printer because 1) it doesn’t drain the ink, 2) it prints on paper well and we don’t plan on using it for photos, 3) it does what we bought it for though it is slow.
We don’t know yet how many copies of print from the ink bottles we’ll get, but our old HP would have drained the cartridges on what we practice printed.

A great printer for the price. I've used several tank printers for my small business. This isn't a particularly robust printer, but it doesn't claim to be. It does a good job printing for a personal business. The Supertank saves lots of $$$ on ink!

I didn’t think I would like the ink- tank system, and I don’t like big changes when it comes to tech stuff, thinking that it would take days to reconfigure my WiFi, connections, etc.
Big Happy Suprise here!
My new HP printer was ready to go 20 minutes after I brought it home! And, best of all, I did it all by myself! Super easy and it prints beautifully, on demand, from every device in my house!
