    Honest Review: Insignia 5.1.2 Soundbar

I picked up the Insignia 5.1.2 Channel Home Theater Soundbar from Best Buy and honestly, it’s one of the best affordable sound systems you can get right now. For the price (often well under $200 on sale), this setup blows away most single 2.1 or even some 5.1 soundbars out there — especially if you factor in the included wireless subwoofer and surround speakers. Sound Quality: • The audio is rich and immersive for the price point, with the subwoofer delivering surprisingly solid bass that brings movies and music to life. • With 5.1.2 channels and support for Dolby Atmos & DTS:X, it really feels like a true surround setup — great for movie nights or gaming sessions. Easy Setup: You only need a power supply and a few cables to get started — no complicated receivers or wiring. The wireless connectivity for the subwoofer and rear speakers makes placement flexible and gives that real home theatre experience without the headache. Value for Money: Considering what’s included and how it performs, this soundbar is totally worth the price — beating many brand options in the same low-cost category. Many users have mentioned how impressed they are with the clarity and depth of sound you get at this price. Final Thoughts: If you’re looking for great sound without spending big bucks, the Insignia 5.1.2 system offers excellent value, easy setup, and surround sound that punches above its weight. Highly recommended for anyone upgrading from TV speakers or basic 2.1 systems.

The product arrived right on time and in perfect condition. Overall, it’s a very solid sound system: the audio quality is quite good and the 5.1.2 channel setup is clearly noticeable, providing a truly immersive experience. I’ve tested it with content from various streaming platforms, and it detects Dolby Atmos and DTS:X formats without any issues. It works exactly as described. Excellent value for the price.

I’ve been testing this Insignia soundbar for 2 weeks now, and I must say that I really enjoy this one. The front stage does most of the heavy lifting, and it handles it well. With all the media I’ve watched, the dialogue stays clear, music has heft, and there is some noticeable height when Atmos is on. It’s not the full sound bubble as most Dolby Atmos systems purport, but it does a really good job for my smaller room. There are no up-firing speakers in the rear channels, but there is lift in the front channels. Also, since the rear speakers don’t have height drivers, the surround stays more horizontal than vertical, but it’s still immersive enough to pull you into the movie depending on how you have the room set. Where this soundbar really surprised me is DTS:X. I don’t know if it’s the codec or just the way the tuning is done, but this thing hits harder with DTS:X mixes than Atmos. One of my reference test movies is “Bad Boys for Life” on 4K Blu-ray (an IMAX Enhanced disc), and with DTS:X on everything, it just feels fuller and more robust. The two particular scenes are in the opening scene with the Meek Mill song playing as they raced to the hospital, and the final scene with Martin Lawrence shooting the glass roof, dropping shards at the bad guys. It all surrounds you in a way that feels more natural and super immersive. My room setup is about 10x13 with 10-foot ceilings, and the sound filled it without needing to crank volume up. I had it at 24 to have a good time. The setup was very simple: no pairing issues, no hidden settings menu, just plug in, adjust levels, and done. The only real drawback was the connection options. There’s only HDMI OUT, no HDMI IN, AUX IN, and Power input. So make sure your TV has at least 3 HDMI ports if you’re running a game console, cable box, or streaming device. It’s not a dealbreaker, just something to know before you buy. Aesthetically, the soundbar is just decent. Solid grill on the front sound bar with a mesh fabric concealing the up-firing speakers. The buttons on top are oversized, which at first looked a little goofy, but honestly, it makes them easy to see and use if you’re older or lose your remote at night. One of the main downsides is that the LED indicator light on the front does not turn off. Well, I do appreciate it for notifying you of your current setting and input; it would be great if you could reduce the brightness because it could be distracting while watching a movie. All in all, it’s not trying to compete with a $1,000 system, but for what it is and what it costs, it is actually commendable. Clear sound, strong DTS:X performance, simple setup, and respectable presence in the room. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, I would definitely recommend it. 4.25/5

Insignia is Best Buy’s brand is often associated as “budget,” which can be thought of as “cheap.” I’ve owned Insignia products in the past and found them to be pretty reliable. I think the better descriptor is great value. So far, I’ve been pretty impressed with the Insignia 5.1.2 soundbar. The setup is dead simple - although I have a few qualms with hiding wires - and the sound is a terrific upgrade from a TV’s speakers. IN THE BOX As you can see in the photos, inside the box is the soundbar (which is about 40 inches long) a subwoofer, which is about 17 inches high and 8 inches in width, two smaller satellite (rear speakers) which are pretty tiny (about 3-4 inches tall and 6 inches wide), 4 power cables (one for each item), a remote, and wall mounting hardware. One small omission, I didn’t see AAA batteries for the remote in the box. SETUP You have several options to connect your soundbar to your source. There’s HDMI, which requires eARC on your TV (most newer TVs support it), optical audio, and a headphone jack. There’s not multiple HDMI ports like you’d find in a receiver. So if you had a gaming system or HDMI stick you wanted to watch/play from, you’d need to plug that into the TV itself and not the soundbar. I have a small room with a projector, and the projector doesn’t support eARC HDMI, so I had to take the auxiliary route. Setup is dead simple, so long as you have nearby power outlets. Each device, as you would expect, requires to be plugged in. And for the most part, they’ll be plugged in at different spots in the room. So you will need to keep in mind what outlets you have as you’ll likely be using 4 separate outlets. Of course, you can always utilize extension cords where needed, just something to keep in mind. The three of the power cords are the same, the plug that goes into the speaker is bent, while the 4th is straight. The straight one goes into the soundbar while the others go into the other speakers. Set up is truly as easy as plugging everything in. There’s a pair button on the back of the satellite speakers (the only button on the back) but I didn’t need to push it. Once I had everything plugged in and turned on the soundbar, everything just worked. No pairing needed. Really, it doesn’t get any easier than that. Of course, if you were to mount any of the speakers - which you’ll likely want to - that will complicate the installation but that’s something you’d have to do with any soundbar. There is an installation template that you can use to help place the screws on the wall to mount the soundbar. SOUND QUALITY I have to mention that this is a Dolby Atmos soundbar with satellite speakers. Atmos gives you some terrific surround sound with a minimal number of speakers. That’s because there’s additional speakers in the soundbar itself that fires sound upwards and to the sides that bounce off the wall, mimicking surround. I should note that not all TV shows or sports have Dolby Atmos, is typically (at least in my experience) reserved for movies. I found the audio to be extremely crisp and clear. The sound quality is really well balanced and there’s depth. Characters further away on screen sound further away and vice versa. It really filled the room especially with background scores playing but again, the dialogue would come through really clear and understandable. The bass is pretty good, it’s rich and punchy but could resonate a little deeper. Explosions and gunfire however, sounded pretty darn good. I could hear bullets whizzing behind me in war scenes which really helps create an immersive effect. Again, my room is a medium to small sized room. I thought the audio was plenty loud, balanced and clear. It was a pretty immersive experience watching football as well as movies. It absolutely beats the socks off any TV speaker, but if you have a larger room you might want to consider a more powerful option. CONCLUSION Surround setups can get extremely complicated and extremely expensive. This Insignia model is a terrific value. It looks very streamlined and professional. The build quality is great and the setup is dead simple. The only minor downside is the need for 4 separate plug outlets and extra work needed to hide power cables when mounting on the walls (if you so choose).

It was pretty easy to set up once you know where you're putting the speakers. The sound quality is good but I don't feel I get as much bass and ambient sounds as I did when we had just the sound bar. We might have to play around with it more and see if maybe placement is our problem. For the money, I feel it was a good buy.

I got this on sale for Black Friday. For a surround sound 5.1 setup, the price is really good. You won’t find that kind of a price from a trustworthy brand anywhere. I had an Insignia sound bar in a prior home with just the bar and subwoofer and it was pretty good, just had to leave it behind while moving. This setup is definitely even an upgrade over my previous one, so I trust Insignia brand audio products. This particular speaker I heard is manufactured by the same parts distributor as Hisense, so you’re not getting anything knockoff. Now as for the speakers themselves, they are very good quality. The subwoofer is boomy (depending on the content you’re watching). I find it to be maybe not as loud as some other setups I’ve heard but I feel it also prioritizes lower notes over the midtones which I like particularly with this subwoofer. It makes it more cinematic and less bee-buzzy sounding like others. The soundbar itself is great quality and very clear and crisp. Dialogue is so much easier to hear now in movies that I can turn of subtitles. Now, the magic with this one is obviously the rear speakers which make it 5.1 surround sound. These aren’t necessarily the most high quality part of the setup; definitely what makes the package cheaper. But they don’t ruin the experience. If you put your ear to them, you notice the audio quality is a lot lower from them. More buzzy and static, and very little bass coming from them. They’re small so that is understandable. Very noticeable if you put your ear to them, but you’re not going to do that. In a regular listening position, the front speakers make up most of the sound and the rears complement that so they’re less noticeable and actually fill out to a very rounded out audio experience. The one con is sometimes if music is playing loud enough on the rears you can hear some of the staticiness from them but not extremely noticeable. If you’re an audiophile you may notice more. When watching actual surround sound content the whole setup works really well. I don’t have much experience with other surround sound setups but to an average listener it sounds really cool. The rear speakers are the weakest link but in the full audio experience they complement well and don’t detract too much. If this is something you’d notice or be picky about I’d recommend a setup with bigger more quality rear speakers because I doubt these are upgradeable. Another con is that since this setup is cheaper, it doesn’t have an HDMI passthrough port. So, one issue with this was what audio formats your TV supports. I first tried this on a 2016 or so Samsung TV and it supports Dolby Digital but not Atmos, so when plugged into that TV you can NOT use Atmos content, just regular 5.1 surround if it supports it. I’ll be honest, I can’t tell the difference too much. I know Atmos implies directional sound up and down and I guess I haven’t listened to much content that actually uses that. But another con is that if a device ONLY supports Atmos surround and your TV only supports Dolby Digital, you will get no surround sound at all. Particularly when using a Windows PC or gaming console (my Fire TV worked with surround sound just fine). So if you want an HDMI passthrough, you can plug your PC into the sound bar directly and get surround sound while also still getting it to show up on the TV. If your TV supports Atmos or you use another port like analog or optical this doesn’t matter all too much. And I upgraded my TV shortly after so it’s not an issue anymore. So overall, if you want an amazing upgrade from TV speakers and are interested in surround sound, this is a very good starting point and you don’t need much more if you’re not picky about the rear speakers. The overall sound is great, the subwoofer is very low and powerful, and the surround sound experience is still really great for me; you can noticeably get sound from all sides of the room. I’d totally recommend especially on sale because you won’t get surround of this caliber at this price from anywhere else.

Insignia 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos Review: Out the box, plug and play easy set up. You may have to make adjustments, more than likely turning the surround sound up for the satellites, as well as the Dolby setting medium to high if you are in a larger room. The quality of bass is subpar but becomes surprisingly sufficient when it receives high quality input. The sound bar excels at low to medium volumes, giving the depth of sound we all are looking for. At higher volumes, the sound bar production may become muddy to true audiophiles. If you listen to a lot of music or want strong mid range and heavy low end bass, this is not the set up for you! This system unleashes its potential when paired with an high quality audio input signal like Dolby or DTS. I mainly stream all of my shows or movies and the majority are in 1080p, which offers 5.1 surround sound but it’s not the higher quality audio that usually pairs with UHD delivery. Cons: the sound bar may create popping sounds when switching between apps and the audio signal quality fluctuates. Make sure you have fast WiFi and even better, a wired connection for best reproduction along with high quality wires. If not, I’ve experienced popping sounds from this sound bar. I’ve read online that the popping sound didn’t go away until the unit was replaced or the addition of higher quality wires for some. Me personally, I would upgrade the Ethernet and HDMI cords especially if they are running a long distance first before coming to the conclusion that the unit is bad. At this time, the insignia satellite speaker stands in store are not compatible, you will have to buy a third party universal stand to accommodate these satellites.

This set is great, but with some small misses and a major flaw. The sound is great, but the small speakers could produce a stronger sound for a more immersive feel. They also come with a short cord which makes hanging them high impossible without an extension cord. The cord should also fit more discreetly inside the speak so that it can sit fully against the wall when hung. Setup is incredibly easy, just plug everything in and connect to your smart TV. Everything is already paired together. No need to pair each piece individually is a huge time saver. Now the MAJOR flaw. If the soundbar becomes unpaired from the subwoofer, there is a known glitch that it may not pair ever again. As was the issue in my case. The subwoofer was paired to the TV at one point, disconnecting it from the soundbar pairing, and could not be re-paired to the soundbar. After researching, this is a common problem, sometimes occuring straight out of the box (not ever pairing to begin with). We did a hard reset and followed all of the troubleshooting, but nothing worked so it had to be returned.

I bought two of these, and honestly, the sound blew me away! The audio quality is rich, clear, and has way more depth than the Sony sound bar I purchased before. I was so impressed that I ended up returning the Sony and buying another one of these for my room. I didn’t expect this level of performance from an Insignia brand it’s seriously underrated. Great job on this one!

Great bang for the buck IMHO... using in a 20x16 living room with an older TV via the optical cable.. overall sound is good, and it turns on automatically with the TV. After fiddling with both the TV and soundbar settings volume bass treble etc. got it just right for my taste. Have not used the dolby yet getting a new TV soon with the ARC HDMI so that should make it even better.

I’m extremely impressed with this Insignia 5.1.2 soundbar system—especially for the price. Setup was straightforward, and the wireless subwoofer and rear speakers paired quickly with no issues. Within minutes, I had a full surround sound experience that completely transformed my living room. The Dolby Atmos and DTS:X performance is excellent. The upward-firing speakers add noticeable height and immersion, particularly when watching movies or streaming shows with Atmos support. Explosions, dialogue, and ambient sounds are well balanced, and the subwoofer delivers deep, clean bass without overpowering the room. Bluetooth connectivity works flawlessly, and switching between TV, streaming apps, and music is seamless. Dialogue remains clear even at lower volumes, which is something I really appreciate during late-night viewing. For anyone looking for a true surround sound system without paying premium-brand prices, this is a fantastic value. Insignia really exceeded my expectations with this one. Highly recommended.
