Absolute garbage. The app if you can even call it that makes these easily the worst cameras I have EVER had the displeasure of using. If you intend on having the camera more than 5 feet away from your router then it’s a 50/50 shot of you seeing anything at best. If you want to rotate your phone to see in landscape mode, oops lost stream. Then you must close the app and start again. If I depended on these cameras for security i would be absolutely screwed. It’s not a matter of my connection at home either, 500mbps up and down should mean these cameras have no issue with bandwidth at 1080p.
Adding salt to the wound, I can find no way to watch the feed without using their garbage can of an app. I was looking into it because unless you pay 100 per camera per year it is little more than a decoy camera. What good does an 8 second video with no cloud storage accomplish as far as security is concerned. Lastly, kangaroo literally does not employ a human that one can interact with, sadly just chat bots that redirect you to their coworker chatbot.
None of these issues occurred until I updated the cameras to firmware .4.
Would change my review if they allowed rollbacks or the ability to not use the scamware spam machine that they refer to as an app (I get 1000-3000 notifications a day from the stupid app)
If you look at the uploaded screenshot you’ll see I have been waiting 8 yes 8 days for the camera to connect. What if I was out of the country or something? The word security in the naming of a camera implies that it will work without constant human intervention. Not sure who told kangaroo that these were security cameras. Miss my eBay cameras with the sketchy Chinese app, and that is tragic

This Wi-Fi camera is a budget friendly solution that offers sharp HD video & is very easy to install, but its best features are behind a pay wall. You must sign up for a monthly subscription to unlock person detection features, play back locally stored video via the app, & many two-way talk capabilities since many other brands offer the majority of these features for free so just don’t see buying this over the others offered.
Negatives: 1. If you are on the free plan, you will get a nag screen to update to a pay plan ever time. (very annoying)
2. The best features require a subscription which can get pricey.
I use the Kangaroo camera in the garage, it is a small & sits atop a hinged base that lets you tilt and swivel the camera. You can use the magnetic base to secure or mount it on a wall or ceiling with the included hardware and mounting plate. Setup & connecting to Wi-Fi was easy via the App.
The camera has a microphone, and a single infrared LED. The camera records 1080p video at 25fps with decent quality & 130-degree field of view, has color night vision. A status indicator glows solid green when everything is working properly, & flashes green when the camera is offline or when it's performing an update. Bottom of the camera has a mini-USB power port and a microSD card slot for storing recordings locally. (you have to pay just to view your locally recorded videos on microSD card)
Plan prices start at $1.99 per month or $23.88 per year which covers motion detection with 30 days of video history, event video recordings, motion detection zones. The two-way talk feature is also only available with pay subscription. Theft protection insurance is included with pay plans. The other pay plan costs $8.95 per month or $99 per year and includes everything from the Cam Protect plan, but you can have up to three cameras. You also get professional monitoring & theft or damage protection for up to $1,000. Finally, there is a basic free plan that I'm using which works well with just checking the status of my car but offers alarm feature like motion detection or video recording.
The camera seems well built & reliable since no issues with using it for a week, but some basic options like motion detection & local recording viewing via app should just be included free like others.

This review is for my new Kangaroo Indoor/Outdoor Wired 1080p Security Camera. The camera is nice and small and comes with different mounting items to use in the way that’s most convenient. It has a magnetic and mounting option or you can put it down, like I do on my window sill. The camera also tilts and swivel as needed. I found setting it up to be very simple and straightforward. The app is also simple to use and it’s ready to use within minutes from the box. You can use a microSD card if you desire too but it’s of no use unless you pay for access.
I set it up to receive push alerts for motion and sound detective. The camera records a short 12 second video clip of events it notices which you have access to for only 24 hours, unless you pay for longer access. I found it detects many things but there is a slight delay. I would get alerts and check and don’t see anything, I couldn’t understand. So I moved this camera next to another that I use and I realized the issue immediately.
The problem is there is a delay with this camera, so when I get notification and view, the car or person going by is just about out of range of camera by then. On the other camera, that is next it, I watch and see a person or vehicle going by and see the event very clearly. On this camera, the camera doesn’t start recording immediately so the person or vehicle has left the zone or is leaving the zone by the time this records it. And I’ve set it to different zones, still the same issue. This makes sense that when I thought the notifications were false, they weren’t it was just too slow to capture. If it wasn’t for my other camera, I’d have no idea. I had to watch very carefully and noticed the back of vehicle or person leaving. This isn’t helpful. Maybe if I paid for the upgrade and subscription, it would work better but it’s not worth it for me. I’ll keep it in an area where I already have a reliable camera.
At the beginning of setting up the camera, I couldn’t understand why the app needed so much info, like my address and many permissions such as my driving info. I have multiple camera brands and never was requested this. The basic feature is free and barely includes much, instead, they encourage you to purchase subscriptions to unlock other items, I get included with my other cameras. I do pay a small subscription fee for another camera I use, because I wanted full-length video recording that lasts for some time and person detection. So I’m not opposed to charging for extra features. But pretty much all that’s included for free with this camera is the 12-second (delayed) clip of detection that lasts 24 hours and an alarm. Simple features, like 2-way communication, watching the clips on the microSD card that you have to purchase yourself, as well as other features all costs. One frustrating issue, is also constant ads on this app for upgrades, for other products and something about car insurance? This is constantly, every other time I use the app. It’s a lot. It actually feels like spam to me. Maybe if this was a free product and you knew before you agreed to it, that your cost would be spam. But it’s just unacceptable to have these pop-ups constantly. As much I wanted to love this camera, I can’t. The size, tilt and mounting options are great. The video clips are most clear but with the delay, you miss items, it does work as well in daytime and nighttime. But the delay, the need for so much information, the constant ads, make me can’t recommend it. There are so many other camera options that has the things I like about this but not the cons.

The clarity of this camera is so clear even though is a 1080 P even in low light. The included bracket Connects securely to the camera with a magnet connected to the camera base. This camera blends right in with the furniture in our home not even noticeable. I’m not fond of another app to use this device but the app is nice and very easy to use. I use it in many different ways as a keep an eye on the the grandchildren camera in side and out side speaker is clear. Sets up in a flash wish it came with a battery option as well wired connections don’t always work in certain applications. But all in all this is a simple to move around for different applications in the house in or out at your business even can be used as a car or truck dash cam situation works great I used my hotspot connected camera to the USB port and was on my way. Clear picture even it a moving vehicle crystal clear in daylight night time was not bad either. I gave this camera 4 stars for ease of use and setup and the app is not to complicated.

Great camera for monitoring my utility room.

Great camera that does what I need it to do. I use this camera for my laundry/utility room with the basic plan and it works out perfectly.
The Kangaroo is equipped with an excellent mounting system with a magnet built in. Luckily, I have a piece of ductwork running on the ceiling of my utility room and the camera was easily mountable to this ductwork. The package includes a metal plate with adhesive on one side to allow you to mount this on non metal surface. The metal plate also connect stronger to the magnet so although the camera mount stuck to my ductwork I still used the mount. With the camera being upside down I had to flip the image in the camera settings within the Kangaroo app. Flipping the image was easy and I only to do it once.
The basic plan has everything I need for monitoring my laundry/utility room. I have the capabilities to hear sound, night vision, sound an alarm, and record video as I am viewing. I use this camera to make sure everything is operating smoothly or if I identify a problem like a water leak issue while I am away I can call someone for help.
The only reason I provided 4 stars is because I don’t receive notifications although all my settings are set on my iPhone and within the kangroo app to allow notifications. I am confused by this.
Kangaroo also provides insurance on what you are monitoring. For example, if someone steals your package at your door or you have damage to personal items/your home you can submit a claim right through the kangaroo app along with video proof from you Kangaroo cam.

nice hardware for the price

First, lets set expectations for the hardware, the Kangaroo - Indoor/Outdoor Wired 1080p Security Camera is a pretty cool compact surveillance camera. While connectivity to your network is wireless, it does require a power connection so this does limit where you can put it, especially given that this is also able to be used outdoors. The little cube camera has a magnetic mount a portion which folds out a bit, nice as you can attach it to metal surfaces. I put the camera to good use to monitor the new cat we adopted, it was purrfectly suited to the mission, tracking movement night and day when my cat went to get food and water, sending alerts to my phone via the mobile app. It also picked up a mystery flying (apparently insect) occasionally at night setting off the motion detection, still have not figured out what it is (perhaps my house was built on an ancient burial ground). In any case the camera does what I want for a relatively cheap price.
Now to the negatives, the device seems to lean heavily on upselling of their cloud services. The setup experience required a mobile phone and asked for a myriad of personal information, including address and the app wanted all kinds of permissions including precise location services turned on all the time. This has been a pet peeve with me as of late, mobile apps that what permissions that don’t really make a lot of sense to me. I know the obvious items like setting up some of their other home security components and services, but in this case, I was not interested in those services or products – just the camera. Luckily, I still run 2.4ghz on my wireless router in addition to the now more common and modern 5ghz band, as this camera requires the older frequency, not a problem if your run dual bands, but some people don’t. In any case I did not have any issues streaming video at the lower throughput provided by 2.4ghz Wi-Fi.
Onto their cloud services, you need to subscribe to be able to use the video you could record locally on an SD card, yes local storage you need to pay for to access. Also speaking through the camera also requires a subscription as well as accessing any video in the cloud beyond 24 hours. I get it, they need to push their cloud services, but crippling an otherwise decent camera is a bit much.
Pros:
- Good 1080p video and sound, no issues streaming
- Compact and well built
- Decent mounting options
- Mobile app is pretty nice
- Can save video from cloud to your Camera roll as well as recording live video and still photos
Cons:
- Subscription required for anything recorded more than 24 hours ago and talking through the app to the camera
- Amount of Information requested during setup.
- Only 2.4ghz Wi-Fi connectivity
- Cloud recordings can’t be played back full screen in iOS app unless you save them to your Camera Roll first (Live videos can go full screen in the app, go figure).

This was an interesting camera to review.
I was skeptical initially but after trying it out, I am pleasantly surprised.
Setup was a snap. Follow the instructions step by step and you are all set. You need 2.5 GHz it will not function on 5 GHz per the instructions.
I like the options of the base. You can use the steel plate to use the magnetic to mount or use a screw or stand up on a flat surface. So the various mounting options were good.
Software was easy to use and setup up as well. I opted to use the free version. Free version only allows 24 hours of recorded storage. If you want more you have to pay for a subscription.
Taking recording, photos, talking, listening are are easy to use.
Images are nice. Field of view is good. Night vision is good too.
Motion alerts and detection is good too.
Not bad for a budget camera. If you are looking for a simple system and ok to pay for a subscription for longer than 24 hours of storage I think this will give other larger competitors a run for their money.
The only ding I have for this camera is the short USB cord. I wished it was a little longer. You need to make sure you account for this as part of your setup as it will affect your mounting location etc
Other than that. Good job kangaroo.
I would recommend this product.

App asks for way to much info

I have tried many different brands of cameras and unfortunately Kangaroo wants way to much info! Before I get to that, lets start with the good stuff. Setting up the camera is fairly straightforward and easy and once you get it set up the camera has good quality. The fact it is an inexpensive camera that can be used both indoors and out is a big plus. Most cameras in this price range are usually indoor only. But, it seems for the inexpensive price you trade your privacy.
As I said the setup process is fairly easy, once you get past all the stuff they want or try to sell you! Kangaroo offers a monitoring service and needs your full address, nothing wrong with that as others do also. The problem is, if you don’t want the monitoring service they still make you enter your address, that’s easy enough to get around though! Next up they ask for all sorts of permissions on your phone to monitor your driving and location to try and sell you auto insurance or something like that! You don’t have to give them permissions for that, but they shouldn’t be asking for it in the first place! Kangaroo also advertises that you can use an sd card, but you can only access local storage if you have a subscription! If Kangaroo changed their policy with trying to get you to subscribe to stuff, wanting access to your info and allowing you to use local storage without a subscription, this would be a good budget camera. But as they have it now I can’t recommend it.

A Substandard Subscription Experience
|

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
With a small suite of home security products on offer in simple designs and a focus on ease-of-use, Kangaroo presents as a simple alternative to more involved home security systems, competing against established names with tight integration to digital assistants and connections to larger home security companies. While the price and presentation definitely work in Kangaroo’s favor at the outset, their poor detection algorithms, recording performance, in-app marketing spam, reliance on annual subscriptions to unlock basic features, and an absent customer service experience all make the Indoor/Outdoor Wired 1080p Security Camera very difficult to recommend.
- Setup & Initial Impressions
The Kangaroo app makes the setup process pretty straightforward. Once you’ve created an account, devices are linked to the app using a QR code read by pointing the camera at your phone screen. Instructions on the phone also walk you through your mounting options, of which Kangaroo includes both hard mount and adhesive options in the box. I chose to use adhesive to mount the camera inside a front window for a good view of my front stoop. The magnetic base makes mounting easy - the included metal plate is easily mounted and the camera snaps into place with little effort. Wall screws and mollies are included for more permanent mounting options.
A Kangaroo account is required to set up the device. You’ll need to create one in-app all while being fed a large number of marketing promotions from their partner insurers and Kangaroo themselves. It was troubling just how many things they try to sign you up for, including driving habits monitoring using your phone’s background GPS data. I was none too thrilled by this, and I found later that many basic features are locked behind Kangaroo subscription plans as premium features. More on this later.
The camera itself is very compact and easily placed pretty much anywhere. Though the cables appear proprietary, the camera is powered from a standard microUSB power source, and extra flanges around the connector act to keep debris and moisture away from the port. The included power cable is a little short at just 6 feet, but since it terminates in the common USB-A connector you can utilize virtually any extension cable to run power where it’s needed.
- Connectivity & AV Quality
For how simple Kangaroo tries to make setup, the lack of 5GHz Wi-Fi support is a glaring omission. With only 2.4GHz hardware, odds are you will need to set up a second network on your home router to accommodate as we’re well into the modern era. This also limits live stream performance quite a bit due to the lower bandwidth - I experienced many dropped frames, stutter, and reduced video quality while watching a live view.
Video quality otherwise is very good. The camera’s 1080p sensor captures good detail and color, with a strong aperture that helps keep objects both far and close in focus. The microphone is pretty poor, capturing more wind noise than I thought could exist (when mounted indoors, no less) and serving mostly for loud noise detection rather than conversation recording. Two-way speaker functionality allows you to communicate with your visitors, and the built-in speaker quality is also just passable. You’ll be able to get your words across but not from a distance of more than 6 feet or so.
The camera’s onboard capture and encoding is similarly just adequate. Video clips are captured and rendered in somewhat better quality than the live stream, but there are still frame drops and compression artifacts abound on the uploaded videos. The camera can save recordings to an SD card with presumably higher video quality, but this feature is pretty much moot thanks to the camera’s poor detection capabilities.
- Detection & Recording
The Kangaroo app allows for a limited amount of detection tuning for auto-recording. Motion and noise detection settings are presented as Low, Medium, and High, yet none of these three seemed to make much difference in detection on the camera. All three of these settings caused many false alerts until I was able to define detection zones (detection of motion only in certain areas of the camera image) to filter out a lot of accidental motion from my flagpole. The problem here is twofold: setting detection zones is considered a premium feature locked behind subscriptions in the Kangaroo app, and the detection algorithm is still very poor. There were multiple times where I walked right past the camera on the “High” setting and received no alert or video capture, yet a tree shadow in the distance would set it off. The detection algorithm needs serious work.
Additionally, the recording algorithm needs to be completely rewritten. When motion is detected, the camera seemingly only begins recording a few seconds after the motion has occurred, leaving everything leading up to the moment out of the recording. A parcel delivery, for example, triggered a video clip recording that started with the package already on my step and the delivery van in motion driving away. At no point did it capture the delivery person on my stoop, making the recording somewhat pointless. The camera should be recording continuously so it preserves the activity up to the moment of detection as part of its clip.
- “Premium” Features & Subscription
The most frustrating part of this camera is that an incredible number of functions are locked behind annual subscription plans that are scarcely mentioned in the packaging and documentation but come front and center while you’re setting the device up. While custom sound alerts and automatic contact to authorities are expected premium features, detection zones and further tuning (such as “Detect People Only” to reduce false alerts) are features only available under the Cam Protect plan ($24 per year, per device) or Complete Protect ($99/year, allows 3 devices with enhanced features). These are basic functions I expect to be included with the purchase cost of the camera as other home security products offer these without enrollment in any sort of subscription.
There is also an exorbitant amount of in-app marketing with their insurance partners. Marketing push notifications are on by default, leading to many app alerts and reminders that more savings can be unlocked with further integrations. These quickly became nuisances and even with a Cam Protect subscription, offers and reasons to upgrade to the full plan are plastered all throughout the app.
But perhaps the most irritating part of it all is that changing or canceling your Kangaroo plan is extremely obfuscated. Once you’ve entered your payment information and signed up for the plan or its free trial, there’s no option to change or cancel plans in-app. A Kangaroo agent must be contacted directly to make any changes to your account. This process is made even more inconvenient by limited customer service resources:
“24/7 Live Chat” is simply an Answer Bot that feeds help articles to inquiries. I tried a dozen different approaches but there was seemingly no way to get it to connect to a real agent for help.
Calling their 800 support number on a Monday at 1:30pm led to the maximum hold time before being asked to leave a message to be called back. After leaving the voicemail with all my information at 1:40pm on a Monday, I did not receive a callback by the time I posted this review (about 48 hours later).
Email support creates a ticket in their help queue, which I also utilized right after the call attempt. I received response within a day and the support rep canceled the subscription without issue or question.
- Bottom Line
If you’re in the Kangaroo ecosystem already and pleased with its performance, adding the Indoor/Outdoor 1080p Wired Camera to your existing setup would expand its capabilities, but as a first-time buyer into Kangaroo products, the experience has been extremely underwhelming. The camera’s performance is far too hindered by poor detection and recording algorithms that leave a lot to be desired, and the pointlessly-made-premium features don’t do much to help. Add in obnoxious marketing and a customer service experience that feels like a bit of an afterthought, and I can’t recommend this camera nor Kangaroo products overall. There’s a lot that needs improvement, whether I’m subscribed or not. Not recommended.

Nice little camera but app asks intrusive info

To start off this is cool little camera. At first when it said wired I thought it meant hard wired but instead its a plug in. The first problem with that is if you decide to put this at the top of say.. your front door to use it as a security cam or something to protect you from porch pirates, the wire has to be long enough to come inside and all the way down to the closest wall socket. It has a USB ending too, but what does someone have laying around their front door that has a USB powered socket? Unless it's a newer updated socket with USB's added.
The design is pretty neat, just a simple little cube with the base that unfolds from the bottom so that you can attach it to wherever you want it affixed to. I had this running for only a few minutes to set up with the app and it was already really warm. I thought that was kind of unusual especially for such a small device.
My biggest pet peeve for this small little camera is how intrusive the apps questions are to set this up. Full name, date of birth, full address etc. I don't see anywhere in the app that it provides emergency services to your house if there's an issue so don't see why they'd need all of that information for one small security camera.
What I decided to use it for was an indoor motion camera and was easier to find a plug to reach that way. I dunno if I'd recommend this for an outdoor camera because the wire is accessible to cut and once that's done the app ceases to record or receive info. It does however keep frames of the last recent image when you open up the app.

Upon opening the box I immediately seen that it was the same exact design as a name brand camera that I own. So I was pretty sure I had gotten a great deal. Sadly that is not the case. The video and images are clear. It was very easy to set it up. But before you can complete setup you have to choose between basic features or premium (subscription) features. If you choose basic, yet will only record a 12 second clip of whatever caused it to start recording. That’s not even the bad part. Bad part is when trying to just stream it live it frequently starts buffering stating that it needed to cool down from too much motion going on. Weird. Which that part alone pretty much makes it almost worthless to use as a security camera. I do not recommend this camera. Spend a few more dollars to buy a reputable brand. Hope this helps someone.

My expectations were high, though I knew little about the manufacturer. So many nice features, that can't make up for the slow playback quality.
Lets talk good stuff.
The magnetic mount is wonderful. This makes positioning the camera straightforward. The flexibility of the mount's joints is spot on. Its shape and water resistance design outstanding. Generous power cord length.
And here's the but. Kangaroo starts out with so much possibility. But once I get a notification, and call up the app on my phone, the screen sits there saying preparing video..... for what seems like an eternity. Minutes go by, waiting, ... still waiting. If an incident happened, I'll never be able to respond in time. So for me the Kangaroo team needs to focus on its app and responsiveness to playing back video.
I guess its dependance on Wi-Fi, is its downfall. If your home or office uses lots of devices, its not the avenue to pursue. A few issues needing attention is you cannot zoom in on the video or rotate the phone and expect the video to also rotate. Simple request.
Once the playback is on screen, its sharp and clear. Nice use of Black and White camera for low light. I hope some fixes to be in their future. Most new products have a few bugs to work out and Kangaroo can overcome these issues.

So long as you think of this camera strictly as a "monitoring device" and don't fool yourself into believing it's going to give you all of the sophisticated security features touted in the marketing materials as well, you're probably going to like this camera just fine. Because on paper the Kangaroo looks remarkably capable for such a small and compact unit. And at least for me, setup was quick, painless, and the 1080p video it captures and streams were quite clear and detailed with built-in night-vision for low-light monitoring as well. The camera is weatherproof and can be mounted easily indoors or out using either heavy duty 3M mounts or screws behind the magnetic mounting plate. Like other WiFi app-enabled "security systems," this one provides push notifications to your phone to alert you to when audio or movement is detected, and the video streams and clips it records offer helpful "person detection" boxes that highlight figures onscreen with a yellow outline so you can follow their actions. There is an option for cloud storage and a micro SD card slot for local captures. If you're watching a live feed, you can even press a button to sound a warning siren to scare away potential intruders, porch pirates, and ne'er-do-wells.
That's pretty much where the positives stop. The power cable comes with a weatherized gasket around its mini USB connector that plugs into the weatherproofed mini-USB cable stub hanging from the camera...it's probably not a big deal if you use the camera indoors, but outdoors, you'd better hope that you have an outlet nearby because you can't just swap out any longer mini-USB power cable and guarantee that the connectors will still fit together securely while also remaining weatherproof. The USB wall charger does not appear to be weatherized at all.
Despite a friendly, spoken-voice series of setup prompts, the app setup experience was unnervingly invasive with EVERY personal detail required for complete setup. This information is ostensibly to be used for Kangaroo's much pricier ($100) subscription-based professional monitoring and security dispatch service, but if you just want to set up a camera to keep an eye on the kids in your pool or know when the mail carrier has dropped off some packages, it felt awfully intrusive and unnecessary to have to surrender so many personal details just to get things up and running. The app also constantly nags you for additional insurance and monitoring partners, services, and subscription fees if you stick with the free plan (which I imagine many people might given the somewhat budget-oriented price point of this camera).
The Kangaroo will only operate on 2.4Ghz wireless networks which may prove problematic for some who have moved wholly to faster 5Ghz networks. The audio detection works...I suppose...but the mic itself produced nothing but static and watery digital-sounding noise for me. After initial setup at the back of our kitchen, my wife and son stopped in front of the counter (maybe 3 feet from the camera) to have a conversation; I monitored their discussion using the live feed on my phone. I could tell that people were talking, but I seriously couldn't understand a word either of them was saying, and there were no other sounds in the house they were competing with. I tried reviewing the video clip from the app after the conversation was over but apparently the audio that the Kangaroo was monitoring wasn't saved to the video on my camera roll at all! If you hope to record intruders discussing where they intend to pawn the items they're stealing from you, you'll be sorely disappointed--or at least incredibly frustrated trying to make out anything they are saying.
Event capture after detection in the basic (free) plan is laughably short--only 12 seconds per event. Post-detection recording or startup of a live feed also suffered from VERY protracted delays which was odd because you can turn the camera on and off from the app almost instantly. Obviously, this further erodes the value of this system's "security features" because you are going to end up missing some of the action you wanted to capture in the first place. The ability to sound a siren if movement is detected is certainly appreciated, but you can only do it manually from within the app--I guess you'd better hope your phone is handy when someone starts eyeballing the delivery on your doorstep or rummaging around your home while you are away because you cannot set the camera to sound an alarm automatically in any kind of "vacation" or "away" mode.
All additional (useful) security-oriented features are locked away behind recurring subscription fees that range from $24 to $100 per year. Granted, some of the additional costs certainly have their place, including modest reimbursement for home damage or stolen packages ($250 for the $24/yr plan and $1000 for the $100/yr plan), and the previously mentioned professional monitoring and dispatch services (if you feel you need that level of protection or security). But what is most irritating is that many such features and capabilities are already available using the hardware you've just purchased...it feels a bit like having to pay the dealer to remove an RPM limiter on the car you bought just so you can drive it on the freeway and not just around the neighborhood. For example, the camera supports 2-way audio, but you can't access and use it without a subscription. If you want to specify camera detection zones to avoid motion detection due to street traffic or waving flags, leverage supposedly more sophisticated "person detection" capabilities, receive voice & text notifications--heck, even just record a video of a complete detection event and not just 12 seconds of it...it all requires a subscription. Oh, and do you want those features for more than one camera (but only to a maximum of three), then you'll need to shell out for the $100 annual plan.
Bottom line--even giving into the conceit that the basic/free security features of the Kangaroo should be considered "detect-only," my experience suggests that is probably still being a bit generous, especially given the lengthy delays at starting up live feeds after a detection, the limited capture time of detection events themselves, and the completely unusable audio performance of the onboard microphone. If you already have some Kangaroo security and monitoring assets in your home, maybe the value proposition of this camera makes sense; but for those of you just looking for an off-the-shelf surveillance, monitoring, or light-security solution, there are better options out there that give you more out-of-the-box features for your dollar.

If I could give this Kangaroo Cam zero stars I would.
Actually this security camera is fine. It's well made and it works right out of the box. That's not the problem.
The problem with this item is the way that the Kangaroo Cam company chose to market this camera and the software app that they include with this.
The Complete Protect Plan.
They have 3 subscription plans. The first is a plan for $99.99 bucks for one year. That covers support for 3 cameras with all of the features. The features are Alexa and Google assistant support. Person detection with facial recognition mode. Changeable video capture length. (Default or basic record length is only 12 seconds of record time, that's not enough to be of any value. More on that later.) Two way audio. Zone motion detection. Text and voice notifications and Micro SD card playback. Of course all of thee little cameras have night vision and so does this one in all advanced plans.
The second premium plan is called Cam Protect.
This plan is $23.88 per year and it carries the same advanced options as plan number 1 and it covers only 1 camera max.
The Basic Detect Plan.
If you chose to just use the Basic plan you get Camera cloud storage using the Google drive. That allows you to store 12 second video and still picture capture when viewing the live camera option. You get an active history for 24 hours which is actually nothing. You get Alexa and Google assistant and of course the not enough 12 second record time when the motion detection is activated. The box says you can use a SD card but you can not in Basic.
In Basic there is also the option in the live view mode to record a live video and to capture a still picture. The video record in Basic mode does not work, only the picture capture option works.
In my opinion the Basic Plan is a complete joke and I will tell you why. The motion detect and 12 second video recording are fine. You were allowed to save these 12 second motion detected videos to your device, either phone or tablet. Here's the insulting rub and what really angers me. The ability to save the 12 second motion captured videos GOES AWAY AFTER ONE WEEK!!! At least mine stopped and I don't think anything is wrong with my device. I tried to save and there was nothing present in the folder after 1 week. This is a ploy to literally force you to buy one of their plans.
When I first bought this and started using it I couldn't understand why people were so negative and angry over this camera. After 1 week I found out why. The app totally worthless, especially after 1 week. After 1 week you can essentially DO NOTHING except to look at a live view and take capture pictures. Who knows if that goes away. Yes, the 12 second motion detected videos do still appear and work. However, here's what makes me mad and I will emphasize again, YOU CAN NOT SAVE THE 12 SECOND MOTION DETECTED VIDEOS!!!. For that reason I will highly caution you to stay as far away from this camera as you can.
DO NOT buy this Kangaroo Cam.
I can't take the thing back because I lost my sales receipt. That's my fault. I have done some research and I am now looking in to trying to find a free open source app or windows software program so I can run this wifi camera. THE SOFTWARE THAT COMES WITH THIS IS HORRIBLE. So BE AWARE
I will close with this. Most if not all of these little security cameras like this one require a subscription to get premium options above and beyond the Basic plan. What they are and how long they last or what they contain I can not tell you. All I can say is to save yourself the price of $45 bucks plus tax on this Kangaroo and find something else. This is a rip off. Cheers...

Don't think of this as a cheap way to protect your property, because in all honesty, this is not going to do anything better that to watch your stuff get stolen by a porch pirates. That is unless you opt for the pid survice that allows you do anything worth doing on the app, like record and save footage, call 911 or even talk to your mailman. The price for this camera isnnt worth the headache involved in the setup that seemed to take forever. I mean I literally had to theaten the cameera by calling tech support. But even doing that was a waste of my time, because tech support knew nothing. I've been sitting on this camera for a good week, waiting for my opportunity to write this. The most important thing you need to know is, nothing is free or even cheap, if you let Kangaroo tell you. Anything worth doing on any other sercuity camera, has to be paid for. You could literally buy a spycam offlinne and get better service. I'm seriously dissapointed with this camera. The simple ability to hang it up inside just to get a few of the inside of your home, is the only use off this camera. If you're trying to catch your roommate stealing your last slice of pizza, this aughta do it. Pass on this camera. Please. Not worth your hard earned money. This thing is cheap.

Very basic and have to have a paid plan to use it to be as usable as other brands of very basic cameras. For the price reduced price its okay but if it would have been any more would have returned it.
