Cutting Edge Tech-Not for the faint of heart

I've had this unit for three days now. It was a self install. I replaced a DNX9990HD which was 6 years old. GOOD news: the 9705s interfaced perfectly with ALL the connections for my 9990HD...meaning that I unplugged the various connections from the back of the 9990 and plugged them into the 9705s AND THEY ALL WORKED! Bad news: I can't attest to the difficulty of a self install if you had to follow the included install instructions...splicing wires etc. I didn't have to do that. But if you've got a previous Kenwood install it's likely to hook right up. Mine did. If you don't want to go that route...or can't...BBY has a free Geek Squad install deal running right now! Physical installation will vary in difficulty depending on your vehicle and your skill at disassembling intricately connected pieces of dashboard trim. My install uses the RP5-GM11 to hook up my steering wheel controls. This unit can use the Maestro adapter but I already had the RP-GM11 and stuck with it. It works as advertised. I HAVE A CONVERTIBLE...one of the things that was so awesome about the 9990HD is that the screen could be set to -1 degree of tilt which kept the glare to a manageable level when in top down mode. The 9705s has a MECHANICAL tilt adjustment like my 9990HD but it only goes to 0 degrees not -1 degree. That required me to install the head unit with the screen tilted as far down as the mounting brackets would allow to achieve the same tilt as the -1 degree tilt in my old 9990. It worked. At 0 degree (mechanical) tilt the screen is protrudes slightly from the dash at the top and is recessed slightly at the bottom. This is how the screen is angled when the top is down. The rest of the time...and when the unit is off the screen is on +1 degree tilt which is parallel to the dash and has that nice OEM look. Also realize this unit has an ELECTRONIC tilt adjustment. It doesn't change the physical angle of the screen but does change the vibrancy and focus of the screen if it has a lot of light falling on it. I keep that adjustment at -3 degrees (on a scale of 0 to 3 degrees) all the time. All that said...with the top down on a sunny day...the screen is usable. Not great but usable on a sunny day. That's about the best you can hope for in a convertible. With the top up...it's fine...even great! Good definition (except when running Google maps on Android Auto )...there its only good but not great. The colors and contrast on that app are somehow just meh. Once hooked up and physically installed in the center console it's time for setup. That's just about what you would expect it to be. I have a front camera and a rear camera since my Corvette has visibility problems at both ends. You can attach a dashcam in place of the front camera if you want. It doesn't appear to take BOTH a front cam and a dashcam and a rear cam...not enough video inputs. Unless I missed something. I have the SiriusXM adapter for satellite based radio but this radio will also do SiriusXM through the mobile internet on your phone...part of Carplay or Android Auto. Both work in my install. It also receives HD radio and plays DVD's and a variety of media file types. It also has it's own GPS antenna to augment the one in your phone. The unit comes with TWO usb ports (which provide 1.5amp fast charge. My Note 8 takes a ton of power and this provides it without loss of battery charge) which are BEHIND the head unit and must be attached before finalizing the install. My phone connected to one (so I can use Android Auto) and the other connected to my remote usb (through and extension cable) in the center armrest. Good for a usb stick. NO front panel inputs at all. To use Android Auto my phone must be connected via both Bluetooth AND the usb port. In my case that meant a usb-a to usb-c cable not included. The selection of that cable can be CRITICAL to the function of AA. UP UNTIL NOW THE 9705S HAD A 5 STAR RATING GOING...I was extremely happy with how all had turned out until I headed over to Android Auto...which was really why I bought the unit in the first place! Android Auto...hereafter AA...and Apple Carplay...and Kenwood Weblink use your phone's apps and internet connectivity to provide navigation (Google Maps/Nav for AA and Waze for Weblink...don't know about Carplay...I'm an android guy) and a variety of other services on the touchscreen of the 9705s (which OBTW is nice and accurate and responsive!) for ease of use while driving. AA also allows some degree of voice control of the systems...I'm still experimenting with that but I can say that it works about 75% of the time. That's pretty good in my experience and will likely get better as the AA product improves. Kenwood's Weblink is similar to AA but more limited...it will play music from your phone...it allows onscreen use of Waze but don't expect to use your phone for ANYTHING else while Waze is in use...the screen on the 9705s is a mirror of that on your phone so anything that changes the screen on your phone (even locking it!) kills Waze on the 9705s. One thing that Weblink has that AA doesn't is a limited UTube app...some vids play some don't) so you can watch cat vids in the car I guess...if you have the wiring in the dash hooked up right. DVD's and internet vid are normally inhibited unless the parking brake is set. Weblink worked fine out of the box...just hook up your phone to the usb cable and off it went. If it wasn't for the screen mirroring in Waze I'd have been done there but I wanted the screen on the phone to be available for other uses so as much as I like Waze this wasn't going to do it for me. AA is supposed to be plug and play when you hook up your phone to the usb cable AND connect it via BT. For me...and judging by the internet research I did while troubleshooting it...lots of others it wasn't. When I connected the phone it went into a continuous loop of trying to connect...showing the phone for a second and then dropping the connection...and then trying to reestablish...and on and on and on. Even if I had the Geek Squad install I doubt this would have been something they could have helped with...but who knows? I fixed it myself...after 24 hours of banging my head against the wall and surfing all over the internet. Ok...AA (and Carplay and Weblink) are the bleeding edge of car tech right now...AA has issues. They are being worked out...as I worked out mine...but with all the variables: phone, cable, head unit etc..they are hard to pin down. One common factor though is the CABLE you use to connect to the phone...it has to be JUST RIGHT or no worky. But just right is not a constant. Google has a list of cables LIKELY to work...but not everyone gets the same results! SHORTER is better...higher quality (whatever that means) is better...and connecting a SHORT HIGH QUALITY cable DIRECTLY to usb port on the back of the head unit is best...but not consistent. I had to rip the head unit out of the dash and try 3 different cables (with the unit still hooked up to power so I could test them) only to find out they all had the same problem...as did the remote usb port in the center console. I settled on using the shortest (18") thickest, best looking cable I have (it came with my GoPro and had their logo on it and didn't say made in China...lol...though it probably was) and reinstalled everything. Still the same problem. I gave up, had a couple beers and went to bed. Overnight a little voice whispered in my ear "factory reset the phone." I had to admit this looked like a SOFTWARE problem. And the 9705s was fully up to date...did the update procedure myself. That left the phone. Who wants to factory reset a phone they've been using for nine months? NOT me...but that's the only thing I could think of. So I saved data...made backups...uploaded to the cloud...you get the idea. And reset the phone. Now it's a clean install of Android 8.0 Oreo. Just what I had before...but clean as a whistle...I hoped. Downloaded AA from the play store...went through initial setup then plugged it into the 9705s and PRESTO!! AA launched in all it's glory. Ok...so what does AA do that makes it worth all that? When it launches your phone screen goes black with the AA logo and the apps that it supports (right now that's Google Maps/Nav, Google Music, SiriusXM, phone, text messaging...and some others...those are the ones important to me) become available on the 9705s! You can control them directly from the touchscreen or say OK Google and tell the system what to do...and it does! Most of the time. That includes reading you incoming texts, replying to them (for sure by transmitting the default response "I'm driving right now" and maybe by recording and typing your dictated response...haven't tried that yet but it's supposed to work), making or receiving phone calls over the sound system (Ok Google call John Smith), tuning the SiriusXM radio (Ok Google play SiriusXM 90's on 9), navigating (Ok google navigate to Tampa Florida) and likely a bunch of stuff I haven't found yet. And likely more to come. Wireless AA is enabled on this radio but I can't evaluate it...it only works so far on Google branded phones. But it is coming for all. Supposedly. Then the phone can stay in your purse or pocket and just connect and go. Not good for long trips as it will kill your battery pretty quick...but for short hops it would be great. And last but not least in my install I can...with a few swipes clear the phone screen and have my Escort Radar app (or whatever else you need...maybe real time radar if it's stormy) up on the phone while AA still runs on the head unit. That's gettin' it done! And it once the head banging was over...it works VERY well. Ok. Bottom line. This was a GREAT upgrade. No organic navigation in the 9705s but who needs it if you have GNAV or Waze? Only if you frequent places with no 4G data service for more than 20 minutes or so. The screen is flexible and bright and the integration is excellent. Recommended.

Won't Connect to Phone or GPS

This stereo is horrible and as a traveling Photographer where my car is my mobile office as I literally drive in mountains and in places that do not have great signals in order to get those awesome photos of Nature and Landscapes! I needed a stereo with a built-in GPS unit - which the salesman told me this unit has but does not! That's not acceptable for me as navigation won't work on my unit and will only work on my phone with Android Auto, and it only gets worse from here... It won't connect to my phone and says USB device over current status detected when I do connect it as it's needed for Waze and Google Navigation and doesn't do a lot of the things that it says it will do. I already made an appointment today at Noon to hopefully get this unit switched out with the right Kenwood stereo as I am not happy with this at all and do not recommend this stereo to anyone! Do yourself a favor and spend the extra $50 more on the one with the built-in GPS/Garmin Unit, and I promise you that you'll be happy with it! It doesn't matter if you have a cell phone signal or not, you'll still be able to have navigation preloaded in your stereo of the North America and will be able to get out the places that don't have great signals! Also, Android Auto and Apple Carplay won't even work with this unit and I am very unhappy with it! It just keeps saying USB device over current detected, won't sync with my phone (except for the phone book) and this is not a highend unit to buy for $599.99 as it doesn't do the features that says it will!! I'm going to spend that extra $50 on the stereo I want today as I hope they will allow me to return it with the receipt as it's the last day on the 30th day that I bought it and will return it for the right unit that's going to work and not give me these problems along with the built-in GPS unit and things that I truly do need! Look at the 2 photos below to verify what I'm saying!

I own a 2013 Chevy Silverado and have always told my wife the only thing I didn’t like about the truck was the radio. The stock radio wouldn’t play my music through Bluetooth and when plugged in to USB port it would automatically start playing the first song in my iTunes music. Was annoying. She got me this radio for my birthday and I will take this radio with me to whatever vehicle I own now. It has tons of adjustments and presets to use for whatever music type you like. It loads my Apple play, google maps, waze, podcasts...whatever I need it to do it does quick and without a hiccup. It had the ability to plug a back up camera in it and I haven’t done that yet but that will be my Next purchase for truck. I haven’t watched a dvd on it but it has that ability. It’s not HD quality when watching one though. Bottom line: if you have a smart phone and still have an archaic stock radio. You will love this one. If you don’t have a smart phone then I wouldn’t buy this radio because you can get a much cheaper radio that does what you need it to do just as well

The glass screen is like a cellphone. Very responsive screen, fairly intuitive, just takes a bit of use to get familiar with. My big issue is my ipod nano 7th generation with lightning adapter can only be connected via bluetooth, doesn't show artwork. I understand the ipod is older but it should be backward compatible. My 2010 stock unit in my other vehicle works the ipod more effectively. Other than that CarPlay and android auto work great. The user manual could be better. HD radio 2nd and 3rd channels to some time to figure out how to tune

    Not worth the price

The tilt screen takes care of almost all reflected light problems that comes with a flat display. My overall opinion is, it's a good receiver but over priced. Purchased the Pioneer AVH -501EX, great RX but due to the reflected light issue I upgraded to the Kenwood DDX9705S. The FM tuner is garbage. Living in a rural area I was able to get some talk radio shows with the factory Ford receiver as well as the Pioneer AVH-501EX. With the Kenwood DDX9705S I lose the stations 15 miles from my home. The AVH-501EX actually improved the signal on the FM receiver and got good reception all the way to my front door. Save yourself some money and buy the Pioneer.

I had Best Buy install this in my car, and the installer did a terrific job. The only problem was that Waze didn't work from the start, Android auto is finicky at best and the entire thing keeps disconnecting when I got a bump (or not). Sometimes it does it when sitting at a light. I then have to unplug my phone and plug it back in. I don't know if this is just an Android Auto thing or if it's related to the head unit directly. And to to it off Android Auto just announced they're completely revamping the entire UI. Terrific.
