Bought this alongside a new LG OLED TV and the 4K HDR movies on disc look amazing. Could definitely notice a difference between regular SD/HD material on TV and from watching a 4K HDR disc on this player.

Having used two other 4K UHD Blu-ray players, I can say that the LG UP970 feels decidedly more entry-level than competing models. It does the job without any major issues and is fast with a sleek design. However, it lacks many advanced options and doesn't feel as solidly built compared to other players. PROS: - Easy set up. Simply connect an HDMI cable (make sure it's a Certified Premium cable), plug it into a power outlet, and then follow the on-screen instructions. - Very fast and responsive. Discs are fast to load and the unit responds to commands from the remote quickly. - Dual HDMI outputs. HDMI 2 is reserved for audio-only output. Perfect for those with older soundbars or receivers that can't pass through an HDR signal. - Great picture quality. I've tried several UHD Blu-rays, 3D Blu-rays, regular Blu-rays, and even some old DVDs. All look very nice, if not a bit softer-looking compared to my other 4K players. For UHD Blu-rays, the player automatically engages the HDR mode on my TV without me having to do anything. - The remote control is lightweight and comfortable to hold. COULD BE BETTER: - Other reviewers have stated that this player sounds like a "jet engine" while spinning Blu-ray discs. I certainly don't think the player is THAT loud. Louder than competing brands/models? Sure, but not by much. As soon as I move more than 3 feet from the player, I can't hear it at all. - Compared to my other 4K player, the overall build quality of this LG seems average at best. The LG UP970 is very lightweight and the plastic feels rather cheap. This likely contributes to the slightly louder noise during disc playback. Not a major issue, but because this player is priced identically to competing models, it's something to consider. - There is no "subtitle" button on the remote. If you want to turn on subtitles during movie playback, you'll need to press the "info" button and then turn on subtitles via an on-screen menu. - LG has stated that this player will support Dolby Vision, but there is no sign of such support at the time of this review. Hopefully a firmware update will be released soon. CONS: - The user interface design of this player is archaic - like something out of the early 2000s. It's a shame that LG couldn't implement a version of webOS that it uses on its smart TVs. - The settings menu is extremely limited. There are no advanced audio/video settings. No Bluetooth connectivity for wireless headphones. No obvious way to stream media from a home network. - Only two streaming services - Netflix and YouTube - are available at the time of this review. I'm hopeful that Vudu, Amazon, and others will be added in the future, but there's been no word from LG. OVERALL: If you're looking for a basic, no-frills 4K Blu-ray player, give this one a look. However, competing models in the same price range offer more advanced features, more streaming services, and better build quality. If/when LG updates this player to support Dolby Vision, that will help it stand out.

The setup for this 4K player was simple. It includes a remote control that uses 1 AAA battery and it is included. The Blu Ray Player itself has a non-detachable power cord and all you have to do is plug it into a power outlet. Upon turning it on, you have several initial options to go through, like menu language and internet connection. I connected mine via WiFi, and the whole setup took under 5 minutes, including the update. A unique feature of this player is that is has smart features. Usually, I frown upon these kind of features because they are often laggy after pressing a controller input. However, this unit has surprised me because it’s actually quite responsive. Aside from the expected 4k HDR / Blu Ray / DVD playback, you can watch your own pictures, home made movies, and even stream from Netflix or YouTube. An optical cable port is included in this unit for alternate audio set-ups. Performance wise, this is by far the most responsive button press to movement interface I’ve ever experienced. On WiFi with 100Mb down, I was able to watch Netflix shows in 4K HDR and they look as stunning as ever. The 4K HDR discs were even more stunning. The quality is even higher when playing something from a disc, but only barely noticeable, which is a good thing. The device isn’t loud and there aren’t any annoying lights that may distract from the experience in a dark room or in a room where you may happen to sleep. The device meets my expectations but I am disappointed at the limited online features. The only streaming services available are Netflix (which has an easy and fast interface within the player) and YouTube. Sorely absent are HBO Now, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and other online streaming services. For this reason, I will deduct one star. The price the player in terms of value depends on your expectations. The quick, responsive interface is a big seller for me, but for others, the lack of major streaming services may deter them from buying it. Keep in mind, though, that an update may one day add these services to the unit, but not a guarantee. Currently, other units exist that cost less and offer all the major streaming services, but may not have as quick a responsive interface as this one. For that reason, I deduct a second star. I highly recommend this product for people who are looking for a good 4K HDR Blu Ray player that has a responsive interface. If you don’t own a video game console, then this can be a great way of watching 4K HDR films via disc or via Netflix.

Great 4k UHD player. I would say this is the best bang for the buck. It supports Dolby vision (LG already released the firmware update) plus the vanilla HDR without costing a leg and arm like other Dolby vision compatible players. Its very quiet (I know early production ones were kind of noisy but mine isn't at all, so must have been fixed). I have played 4 different 4k discs and all play ok, no skips, or crashes at all. Dolby vision worked ok with my Lg oled C7 and spider man homecoming. It has two out HDMI ports (one is audio only, in case you don't have 4K enable audio receiver).

I have been waiting for a 4k player to get to a bit of a more affordable price, and I wanted one that had all the ability to watch any movie with the 4k and this is one of the lowest costing players that supports Dolby Vision with a current firmware update (the first thing you should always do right out of the box is update the firmware) as well as HDR10 which seems to be standard for most players. So I gave it a shot. I’m already a fan of LG’s TVs. Unfortunately the first player I got (yes there was an exchange involved) played any disc I put in at a high RPM that seemed unbalanced as it played, causing it to make a ton of noise that was so distracting during quiet scenes of a movie that I had to take it back. So I exchanged it and fortunately the new player didn’t sound like a small vacuum running in my room. So if you have one that makes a ton of noise, don’t waste your time trying to figure it out and just live with it, get it exchanged right away. Now I can get to the actual product. It plays movies great. There is a pretty basic setup you will want to do going through your players menus and getting it tweaked the way you would want. The first thing is to upgrade your firmware. Yes, it’s worth it. Do this right away. But even afterwards, it’s still pretty basic. The setup process is very easy. But the bright white screen leaves something to be desired. In a dark room, holy cow it’s bright. Highly suggest seeing if you can change the picture. I’m still looking. Maybe popping in a thumb drive in the front USB jack. I don’t know. But anything is better. This is not a great streaming box so far with only Netflix and YouTube to watch 4k streaming on. But I’m guessing that will grow with time. LG seems to be very good about giving it’s players upgrades as they become available. The bottom line is, it’s a cheap way to watch 4k. Don’t expect it to be your everything for entertainment. It plays 4k well, that’s about it. But fortunately, it plays 4k well. And it’s also over $100 less than it’s competitors AND plays all formats. So if that’s what you’re looking for then this is for you.

This was so easy to setup but really I did not expect it to be difficult. The UP970 is packed with easy instructions and you also have the on screen instructions. With the WiFi or Ethernet setup you can also stream YouTube and Netflix. The picture is clear and in true HD but you will need a 4K tv to have the HD experience. Your old blu-ray and DVD catalogs also works great because this LG UP 970 also upscale the pictures. It do not take much space so it can fit nicely by your tv. My pros: Light and slim size Remote only needs 1 battery Easy setup 3D capable for 3D tvs Great UHD picture Easy updates using WiFi My cons: No HDMI cable included Not a digital display player I think this is right on the mark with other blu ray players.

This is a good 4K Blu-ray player with Wi-Fi streaming. It is paired with my LG 55C7 using a Monster Ultra HD Black Platinum HDMI cable. The picture is great when playing DVD, Blu-ray and 4K discs. There is also a great picture when streaming. There are a couple of negatives which prevent this player from being great. First, the streaming Apps are limited and there does not appear to be a way to add more Apps. Secondly, turning on the player does not turn on the TV or switch the input as expected. In addition, turning off the TV does not turn off the player. I am not sure if there is some setting which accomplishes this, but I have not come across it. I expect more from LG in this regard, because my Sony products and even my 10/11 year old Panasonic products have this turning on, turning off and switching input feature. LG, get your game UP!

It would be excellent device if has an app store, but it has only two streaming apps installed already Youtube, Netflix. beside of the high quality picture and not too loud disk drive spinning but LG missed adding a Bluetooth connectivity as this feature is standard on other competitor 4K UHD players out in the market. Quality of picture is gorgeous with HDR. I attached a picture from Allied movie 4k format.

Once again, I'm looking for a new Blu-Ray player to replace my ~2008 Sony Blu-Ray player (which isn't compatible with some of today's discs) and this bad-boy gets dropped in my lap. I'm not 4K yet, but this has dual HDMI outputs (direct to TV && direct to receiver) which I was able to take advantage of; anytime you can avoid a middle-man in video (the receiver), you'll get a better result. Great video and no complaints with the sound or any receiver compatibilty issues (Denon AVR X4000). I powered it up, networked it up & immediately updated the firmware, which took a few minutes, of which no issues were encountered. Next, I went through the menus and it's all 'standard stuff.' I used a few discs & Netflix - and they work great. My only 'complaint' about the Netflix integration, is that sometimes it stays buffering (80-90% ... see attached photo), even after the opening music, etc - and it stays that way when the show starts. I have to hit Stop and play it again and it starts from the beginning, but there's no buffering and it's instantly streaming. This has been a multi-day event, as it didn't just happen one time - but I only notice it on the first play of the day (FAST.COM shows my Down consistently @ 120). At this point, I need a 4K/HDR TV to be on the Insider Network soon, so I can really put these things to the test!

Best UHD BD Player from a Limited Selection

I got this as part of a combo with the LG OLED55C7P, a 55" OLED 4k TV for which I have also written a review and highly recommend. The deal was $30 off the LG UP970 which at the time was $239 making it $209. As of this review its $10 cheaper at $199 after the deal. I had a couple of requirements in a 4k BD player. -HDR10 + Dolby Vision -HDMI Audio out (Optical out a plus) -Ethernet a plus (or at least Wifi) The biggest of the above was Dolby Vision support. I am pretty confident that as of the latest firmware this player supports it (at least according to my TV notifying me of Dolby Vision when playing a disc with Vision). All in all, this player is a 5 star product. I would have rated it 5 star if it wasnt for 1 big issue for me, which I will explain shortly. As for the good aspects: -Has played every disc ive tried in it -Supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision -Firmware update was quick and painless -Software/Menu is simple and easy to use -Delivers a quality picture and sound -Relatively quite during playback As for apps, I wish manufacturers would start leaving these out. Not every device needs to be "Smart". In this day and age it would be a miracle to find a dumb UHD TV. The apps on this will go unused for me and many others I would presume. The good news is that on this player they are out of sight, out of mind. You wouldnt know it had Netflix unless you went looking for it. Taking into account nothing more than how it acts when watching a BD, its superb. Now for the down side, and something I was inclined to possible give it a 3 star rating for... It has no option to disable HDMI-CEC. For many this may not be an issue but for me it has become a bane. My setup is that I have all of my components connected HDMI to a Onkyo TX-NR676 receiver via HDMI and then 1 HDMI from the receiver to the TV using HDMI to the TV's HDMI with ARC which allows the TV to pass audio back to the receiver (for ex when using a built in app on the TV). For ARC to work it is my understanding that the TV and receiver both need to have HDMI-CEC turned on and support ARC (and have it enabled). The issue is that for some reason when changing inputs or sometimes even when powering up components it triggers the UP970 to turn on and for the input on the receiver to switch to the BD player. For ex: If I have the TV and receiver on, with input set to the TV while watching Netflix and decide I want to instead watch Amazon or switch to my STB...the BD player turns on and the input instead goes to the BD player. If I could disable HDMI-CEC on the BD player this wouldnt be an issue, but they have no option I could find for this. While having a simple menu is a plus almost always, lack of options and simplicity do not have to be the same thing. If I disable CEC anywhere else, I lose audio from the apps on my TV which isnt an option. For anyone thinking Optical audio from my TV to receiver would solve this...I have a 5.1.2 setup (Atmos) and it is my understanding that Optical cannot pass this to receiver. Alternatively I may consider running the audio only HDMI from BD to receiver and the main HDMI from BD to another HDMI on the TV itself to see if that prevents the issue. However I think CEC is a TV wide option and not a per input option. Ill report back what I find. In closing, one major flaw which could potentially be addressed in a firmware update or may be a non-issue in some setups. Otherwise a great player

4k Blu Ray players are still quite expensive, so if you can find one on sale that fits you basic needs, then pick it up. I finally upgraded to this after having a older gen sony blu ray BDP-S570 for about 8 years. I do wish these players were much smaller than they are. This is the same size as the one I replaced. There is only one small round light on the front that turns green from red when the player is on. I did kind of like having a small digital screen that my sony had that showed the time of the movie on it. The disc tray you have to put your (pinky) into the disc to get it out, as you cannot grab the disc from the sides. Stupid design there. I was able to do that before. If you can get this on sale for 130 or less than do it. I will probably find a replacement eventually in a few years as the prices drop and the players get smaller and add more features. I don't care that this model only has 2 apps. Most people are using their tv for apps. For the remote, you can rewind slow or faster by pressing the button again as needed. I liked only having to press the rewind button once one my older Sony that went back/forward 15 seconds automatically. To either replay a scene or fast forward the beginning movie studio logos. The remote is smaller with most of the buttons needed in the middle. Player is large. Do the dolby vision firmware update if your tv supports it. Wired connection only. Cannot grab disc by the sides to remove, Remote only needs a single AAA battery which is included. The on screen movie menu is gigantic and takes up most of the left screen when you press the info/menu button.

Wonderful 4k/HDR/DolbyVision blu-ray player. Simple to use and regularly updated. I chose this one because the cost is low, but it still supports Dolby Vision, which my new TV (the LG C7 65") supports. The picture and the sound is amazing. The player also supports Netflix and YouTube, both also in 4k/HDR/DolbyVision, but that's it. No access to any other streaming apps or tools (for now).

4K disc and 3D Blu-ray upscaling are fantastic, truly amazing sharpness with deep colors. Used with a LG 55UH8500 Smart TV. LG's SimpLink was straightforward and intuitive to link to the player and TV, enabling both remote controls to operate the player and TV. Used an audio optical cable to connect the player to my decades old (way ahead of its time) JVC RX9000V 5.1 surround sound system. Had to disable the player's auto-HDMI cable selector output, so that sound played only via the optical cable connection. Initially, left the player's default settings, which resulted in out-of-sync audio via the TV speakers. Had delayed buying this unit after reading several reviews complaining of loud mechanical noise when playing 4K discs. Yesterday, decided to go for it, anyway. So far, 4K and 3D Blu-ray discs have not caused the player to make any mechanical noise.

4K players and manufactures of such are slim pickings at the time of this post. I did a lot of research in what was available and what was the best choice on the market. SONY has always been known for their quality build of products. Sometimes it's a hit or miss on functionality however. So I didn't just jump at the sight of a SONY 4K player being introduced to the market. I went through many review sites and even read up on some actual Customer reviews before pulling the trigger on this SONY UP970 4K UHD Player. SONY has always been more expensive on consumer electronics than the other manufactures out there and as a person on a budget I typically wait until items go on SALE. Grabbed this one on Cyber Week for 150.00 and that hit the sweet spot for my wallet. This machine is basic in design but I found that all players on the market are designed about the same. Playback of 4K movies is smooth and user friendly. All players are not created equal and you get what you pay for. This machine comes equipped with limited smart features such as Wifi connection 3D playback of standard Blu-ray movies and has Netflix , Amazon and Youtube apps already onboard, but that's about it. Other players on the market may or may not have these features. Be sure to research what best works for you. I am happy with my purchase and those who can grab it at this sale price should be satisfied as well.

Overall, a very good 4k Blu Ray player. It's hard as of summer 2018 to find a variety of players that include Dolby Vision, your options are limited. This LG present the best overall value of that group, in my opinion. That being said, there are some very disappointing aspects that take away from the overall quality some. The first is the poor remote control, it's very small, doesn't include a blacklight, and is just not easy to use. The second is the ancient OS that you have to go through, it's remarkably out of date but does function in the purest sense. Both of these things are just lazy, cost cutting measures that are disappointing. While the player overall is a solid value, LG needs to ante up for a better remote and an OS that was designed in the last decade.

I initially purchased the Sony x800 4k blu ray player and I liked it; however, the player would freeze consistently. So I returned it, and purchased this lg. I must say the picture quality is indistinguishable between the lg and the Sony. Netflix and YouTube hdr play without any issues on this player; however, on the Sony hdr would not engage at times when viewing YouTube and Netflix hdr. Don't get me wrong the Sony is a great bluray player in its own right and maybe I just had a bad unit, but picture quality wise this lg is right there with it. The lg will receive a Dolby vision update and is cheaper at the moment. Build quality is where the Sony has the advantage but I purchased this player for how it plays my movies and not how much it weighs or the design. I've had no issues with noise even while playing Sony discs as some have reported. My player build date was April 2017 so maybe that's why. This is a great player and you can't go wrong selecting this player especially if you a Dolby vision enabled tv.

Got this as an open box with the purchase of LG OLED TV. Was hesitant as several reviews complained of loud noise when watching Sony 4k disks. So far have watched 2 Sony 4k disks and a couple other movies with no problem. One complaint, as other reviews have noted, is that it only has YouTube and Netflix apps. Wish it had more, but mainly use apps on my TV anyway. Very basic menu and not a lot of bells and whistles with this LG (why only 4 stars), but does everything I need it to. I also got an additional 20.00 off the open box price by asking sales rep if they could give me a bundle deal as I was buying LG OLED TV as well. Great Job BEST BUY!

I purchased this product because I already had an LG TV which I was quite happy with. The image quality is excellent. Unfortunately, I cannot tell the difference between 4K and 1080P, my TV acknowledges the 2160P resolution and HDR but my eyes cannot see the difference. Maybe the the combination upconverts the image making it hard to tell. Either way the image is great. I noticed that other reviewers complain about the player making too much noise while the disc is spinning, I have not notice this. I recommend you pick this up if you are looking for a good 4K player.
