Great Match for LG OLED TVs

I purchased the "LG - UP970 - 4K Ultra HD 3D Wi-Fi Built-In Blu-Ray Player - Black" because of my recent LG OLED TV purchase. The LG OLED TV uses technologies (Audio and Video) that the LG-UP970 Blu-Ray player matches. Make sure that you have the latest and greatest HDMI cables that high speed and support 4K video. We tend to forget about the technologies that connect our devices, which makes a great difference in the output quality. So far, all types of DVDs (DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K) work perfectly, look great. This player players 3D movies, but unless you have a TV that supports 3D, then it won't show in 3D, but many TV manufacturers are eliminating support for 3D TV. I like the Wi-Fi capability of the player because that means you don't need a hard-wired connection to get any software updates.

I originally bought this for playing 4K Blu-Ray movies on my new LG 65" 4K Smart TV. I have a very large collection of DVD movies so I decided to play one of my old classics, " Days of Thunder". I was very pleased with the 4K Up scaling of this player. This movie really popped in nearly 1080P resolution. It honestly viewed as well as a Blu-Ray disc. For the price of a few Blu-Ray/4K discs, I can now watch my existing DVD collection in "upscaled" definition.
Oh, by the way, streaming content is equally impressive. After hours of checking out all of the many features of this player, I finally got around to using it for the purpose for which it was intended. Playing 4K Blu-Ray discs!! Awesome is all I can say. Combined with the LG 4K TV, you can't beat the picture quality.
Highly recommended!

1) Most important, playback of Ultra disks seems correct. BUT, you'd best leave the "Picture" options alone as much as possible:
a) When I changed some of the "Picture" options, without keeping careful notes of what I'd done, at some point the player lost the ability to render Ultra correctly. I started to see severe banding of areas like clear sky, or walls. The problem was seen with Ultra disks only; the Blu-ray equivalents did not have the banding. It took some pain to sort out whether I had messed up the settings on my (also brand new) TV, or on this player. I finally did a complete factory reset of the player, and that cured it, so far so good. In retrospect, it might also have cured it to set the display resolution from "2160" back to the default "Auto" -- but that experiment I'll leave to someone else.
b) Also, when I changed the frame rate from the default "24" to "60", that (i) caused an annoying bright vertical streak to the left of the image when transitioning between programs, and (ii) had no discernible effect of the smoothness of the playback. Leave it at "24" as long as that seems to work OK.
2) It is a handsome box. There is no front panel display, though none is really needed.
3) But the remote is too cheap for a fairly expensive player. The keys are hard to find and hard to use. In particular, the left/right/up/down/OK cluster has squared-off buttons that are hard to identify by touch alone. If you press the wrong key you may be kicked out of your movie back to the setup screen. The keys are not illuminated, so that is too easy to do.
4) Even though the industry has abandoned region coding for Ultra disks, this is a U.S. region-locked player for Blu-rays and DVDs.
5) The best news for me is that this player will render NTSC Closed Captions into text. These captions are separate and different from subtitles and are the only hard-of-hearing assist on many DVDs. Traditionally, it was the job of the TV to render Closed Captions. But when analog SD TV ended, Captions became neglected. I had been disappointed the my new LG TV does not render them, and I am now glad to find that LG has instead moved that function to the player box. I don't know if this is a coordinated move by the industry, or a specialty of LG, but it is very welcome.

Great player w/Dolby Vision & YouTube HDR.

Player is as advertised. Main reasons I purchased this player are that it has Dolby Vision capability for 4K UHD discs and it has 2 HDMI outs, one for Video and Audio and one just for Audio. I have a Dolby Vision capable tv and wanted to take advantage of it. This is/was the only reasonably priced player with that capability. I also was not going to upgrade my system to Dolby Atmos yet, so the duel HDMI allows me to plug HDMI 1 out from the player directly to the tv and HDMI 2 to my AVR for the sound.
It is a barebones player. It only has two apps, Netflix and YouTube. My tv has Chromecast Ultra built in so having apps on the player was not a priority. To my surprise though, the YouTube app has HDR capability (VMR9). If you have not watched YouTube 4K UHD HDR videos on YouTube the way they are meant to be seen, you are missing something. They are fantastic!
Two reasons I am not giving it 5 stars:
1. Limited playback of videos from the USB port. Some play, some will not. Many factors go into this, but it should be able to play all of the well known types of video and audio tracks, but it can not.
2. This is really petty, but there is no way to turn off the power LED. It is literally the only light I can see in a dark room watching a movie. All of my other equipment has a way to turn the lights off. Like I said petty.
Overall, I am very happy with the player. Have not had the noise factor that many have experienced with this player. Hope this helps.

I've been keeping my eyes on this player for a while now. Finally got it on sale for $129.99 Definitely worth the money. I read lots of negative review about the player being loud, but it is so quiet i can't hear anything, especially when CD tray opens and closes. Plays HDR content no problem. Dolby Vision I don't have any movies with it yet. My model was produced 2018 January. Did the update. Very simple, clean design. Im happy it doesn't have any other apps then YouTube & Netflix. My TCL 6 series TV is already smart, so no need for extra apps here. So far only watched one movie, " Patriots Day" Very pretty picture.

I had just bought the LG OLED 4K TV and had a good working LG blu ray player; but, I wanted to upgrade the picture to 4K. You can get a very good picture with the 4K TV through the blu-ray player; but, you can get even a better picture with the 4K blu-ray player. DO NOT FORGET to buy your 4K HDMI cords to go with this player...and also upgrade the HDMI cords throughout your system if you upgrade to 4K.

If you are looking for an affordable 4k player, this is it. It plays 4k movies as well as blu-ray and dvd. The apps on it or slim to none but what else do you need besides Netflix and 4k movies? Others might want more and if so, spend more than $200 for what you are looking for. But for $99.99 this was a steal.

Upgraded from Samsung due to Dolby vision compatibility. If your receiver is not compatible with Dolby vision but your tv is , you can connect player to tv directly and other hdmi can go directly to receiver , great feature. Plays great however lack of apps

I was warned by sales that most 4K units did not work well with OLED TV's from LG. I did have some trouble at first but it turns out the warning should have been to use a high speed HDMI cable. Once the original HDMI cable was replaced with a faster one the unit worked fine. I bought two of them one for the OLED with high end audio attached and one without. Both work great with proper HDMI cables. Also Netflix built in does 4K nicely also.

I wanted a UHD (4k) Blu-Ray player that supported Dolby Vision and this is one of a very few that does (as of April 2018). You have to upgrade the firmware to get Dolby Vision. It does work well with my LG OLED. User interface seems very outdated, same interface as a LG Blu-Ray player from 5 years ago. Only "smart apps" on it are YouTube and Netflix. They both support 4k content and Netflix supports Dolby Vision BUT does NOT support Dolby Atmos - very odd. But no big deal, I use the Netflix app on the TV which supports both. Dual HDMI out is great as my Atmos receiver does not support (won't pass though) HDR/Dolby Vision, so one HDMI goes right to the TV and the other to the audio receiver. Getting the Atmos audio set up was its usual pain in the behind but I think that is due to the receiver automatically trying to get audio from the TV when the TV is on VS getting it from the Blu-Ray player. Quality wise, everything works well. I only own 1 Dolby Vision disc right now but it worked well. I did have the player fail in the middle of watching a regular Blu-Ray, but turned the payer off and back on and I was able to resume where it left off. I have only watched maybe 6 movies on it so far, so it failing once is probably not a good sign, but there was another firmware update since that fail so hopefully that helps.

This is by far the best dvd player I have ever owned! The movies are crystal clear and the sound is awesome! I can play 4k, 3d, standard dvds, cds and camcorder movies now on one player! LG makes the best home theater products in the world! I loved this player so much that I bought a second one! I highly recommend this LG blu ray player! People know that I am the movie queen with the greatest collection of movies! Movie night at my house every Friday night! My friends envy my LG UP970 home theater system and plan to buy their own!

From the box to my 4K LG OLED TV, the LG UP970 has performed without missing a beat.
Very easy to install - remember, if you are using it for 4K/3D discs, get a 4K HDMI cable that goes from the unit to your 4K TV.
It plays all of my discs (incl. my home video stuff) and I am amazed at the upscaling. For me, this player can't be beat.
I was looking at some other units and the Best Buy staff assured me this was the one to buy - and they weren't wrong!
I would highly recommend this player for your 4K, 3D, BD, DVD & CD discs.

Only reason I bought this player is because it was only $150 and came with three 4K movies of my choice from a specific pool of movies. The player is just "ok"...it can stream Netflix and the other one app it came preloaded with (can't remember what it is, not Hulu though), but you can't download more apps at your leisure. The manual says that it will "download them as they become available". And, if streaming files from your computer is your thing like it is mine, it can't do that over Wi-Fi...you have to load the files on a hard/flash drive and plug it into the player. Kind of annoying. Honestly, I probably would not buy this player again. It's pretty clear to me that Best Buy wanted to unload these LG players and threw in the three movies to make that happen. And PS - don't watch "Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, MO" unless you're prepared to hate the end lol. That was one of the movies I picked and I wish I could trade it in fair and square.

This is one of the few players that supports Dolby Vision, which is why I chose this over other players. I watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 on UHD BD and it looked great. I watched Lion King on BD and it looked great as well. However, the player is very noisy. I didn't notice it during action scenes, but it was very noticeable during dialogue scenes. While the player itself supports Dolby Vision, it's Netflix app does not. Also, the player only has two apps (Netflix and YouTube). I had the player connected to the internet via Ethernet and it did not seem to be able to handle a 4K Stream. Just to make sure, I tested the same movie on my LG OLED connected via Ethernet and the movie streamed just fine.
I was hoping this player would be my finale UHD BD player selection, but due to the loudness, the lack of apps and the streaming issues, I will be returning it.
Although less important, the UI is really outdated. It looks like a cheap $10 DVD player UI.

Purchased a new LG Oled 4k tv and wanted to upgrade my blu ray player to match the quality of the monitor. My expectations are simple and few. The player needs to produce an excellent picture quality with the expanded Ultra HD colors in 4K, play 3d, produce quality output sound for my surround sound system, and start up quickly once the disk is inserted. I am pleased to say that the UP970 easily meets those expectations.
One thing that I wasn't going to tolerate was a slow start up. My previous player would make you wait and wait before the disk would start playing. I was concerned that with all the additional information being passed with Ultra 4k that this condition wouldn't improve but that is not the case with this player. Movies start quickly and menu's are easy to follow.
Documentation that comes with the player is minimal (as now seems to be the trend), but if you have set up a player before then this really isn't going to be a problem. There aren't that many connections to deal with anyway.
Dolby vision is a software upgrade that is promised later this year. So far there aren't any movies produced with it so we'll have to wait for the upgrade and movies.
Ultra HD 4k is definitely a nice picture. Scaling up your old blu ray disks is also handled well with this player and really looks good. DVD's scale up as well, but the difference is more noticeable. DVD's are good quality, just not as good as the others, which is expected. Avatar played in 3D is impressive as I had hoped even though it isn't 4k (there isn't a 4k 3D standard at this time).
If you want to know all the little details of this player then you should seek out an in depth review. But if you are like me and want a no fuss high quality player that you plug in and go with great picture quality, then there is no need to look further. I highly recommend this player.

PLAYS DOLBY VISION AND DOBY ATMOS

We bought this mainly to play DOBY Atmos. We paired it with LG - 5.1.2-Channel Hi-Res Audio Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer and Dolby Atmos - Black. So far it's working great. We had to buy a DVD that had both Doby Atmos & Vision to test it out.
It took a while to get both Doby Vision and Doby Atmos to work (see how to below-LG customer service is no help to get all DOBY to work). Once we were able to do it, both sound and visual is amazing. It was on sale and there seemed to be alot of open box items at even lower price (we passed). Alot of people returned because they couldn't access the system update. Similar products are double the price. The update to the firmware really upgraded the system.
To update the DVD player, you have to unlock using 0000 twice. Then in area code, type NO. Then have it look for an update and it will show up. Previously we had it under US and no software update was found. This update lets you see in DOBY vision and is compatible to DOBY Atmos.
The only miss was the amount of time and enegery it took to get everything working (thus 1 less star).

Great 4K UHD BLU-RAY PLAYER!

Great 4K UHD Blu-Ray player, very fast loading and a beautiful picture when I used the built in 4K streaming apps (VUDU, Netflix, YouTube, etc.) however, only after the purchase did I realized my 70" Vizio 4K TV wasn't HDR enabled, so when I played my UHD Blu-Rays of KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE and THE SHALLOWS, they both had a red/yellow tint to them. I had it hooked up with a high-speed 4K HDMI cable and connected to HDMI PORT #1 and did everytging imaginable as far as 'Display Settings' but nothing worked. The picture was very vivid and sharp....just red tinted. Yet the streaming services looked 100% gorgeous! But I'm sure this was not a malfunction of the player (as I purchased a different LG UHD Blu-Ray player and got the same results on picture tint). After looking deeper into my television's specifications manual I found that it in fact WASN'T HDR enabled...which really sucks, but it's still has an amazing picture, so I'm going to wait another year or so until prices on the 4K HDR TVs drop a bit...but the player itself is awesome in my opinion. Very fast and sleek looking!
