Great Wifi system for the whole house

I had been looking into products that would improve Wifi signal throughout the house, not just in the room with the router. It tends to be slow at times in other rooms, especially when multiple devices were connected. This system did a great job of this, and I have had no issues with it at all, although I have not had it long. Some reviews I saw had problems right out of the box, and some over time, but I have not had any negative experience so far. I checked for other reviews and watched a video before setting up to get an idea of what setup and use entails, but it was very simple to get started, and I could have skipped these. It does required the download of the Linksys app, which provides step by step guidance for the setup of each node, and allows for control of the system after this. Additional features one can access through the app include providing guest access to the Wifi network, and prioritizing up to three devices. The system updates the software and security automatically overnight, without the user needing to do anything. It gives you a chance to select a name and password for the system, that's the same for any device using it, and once each has logged in, this system connects to the node and channel or band that offers the best signal for that device. This system includes: three nodes, a power adapter for the main node, and a short ethernet cable for that same node, along with directions for getting started, although more directions are in the app than in this guide. It helps to start with this, then switch to the app when you get to that step. The other two nodes plug directly into an outlet, and connect wirelessly with the first, one node at a time. Additional nodes can be purchased and added in, if needed, although the three included should be sufficient for most homes. I would definitely recommend.

I've been in the IT business since 1990 - this is the absolute easiest setup I've ever seen for a router! It's a full-featured router with 3 nodes. All settings are done via an app you can install on your apple or android phone or tablet. Each node can have it's own channel and it configures itself for the best performance and tests to ensure that each node is in a good location in relation to the others. The performance is fantastic and I couldn't be happier!

Poor Mesh Technology But great main node!

I'm going to start this review by stating that I manage an IT support team and have been in the industry for over 19 years. I have setup hundreds of switches, firewalls, and wireless access points. I've setup consumer grade mesh networks (such as this one) as well as enterprise ones. This Velop product by Linksys is by far the worst set of wireless access points I have ever setup. It is possible I got a bad unit, but no amount of troubleshooting, resetting and starting over, could I get either of the two plug in nodes to connect to the main node to form an actual "mesh". The node simply failed to connect every time. Out of the box, the units look very high tech, clean, and appear to be of nice build quality. The main unit kind of twists and looks really neat sitting on the desktop. There is a fairly annoying cable management behind the unit and it took some effort to "crush" the cables inside of it. I feel they could have used a softer material as to not feel like I was slicing the patch cables or power cable when inserting them. The smaller nodes looked great plugged into the wall and other than the blue LED, they were hard to see and remained hidden and clean. Exactly what I would want from a whole house access point that is intended to be scattered around the house. The initial setup was simple. Plug the first, larger node into my existing internet service provider router. Plug into the power outlet. Download the App. Launching the app immediately found the main node and the node was able to connect to the internet. The app walked me through setting up basics like the wireless name (SSID) and wireless password. I also had to setup a Linksys account and link this setup to that account for management. I then could connect my phone to the access point to gain internet access. The speed and range I got off that single access point was great. I actually didn't need the other two nodes to form a "mesh" to get access through my entire house. My house is not terrible large so this was not really a surprise. There were some areas like far away bathrooms that dropped in signal strength, but I could still get internet access. I assumed the other nodes would have helped me gain more coverage, so I proceeded to the next steps, adding additional nodes. The issue was when it came to step 2, connect another node. I plugged the second unit in a completely open room, about 50 feet from the main node. There was little obstruction other than a drywall wall with an open door. I figured since my phone could see the main node, this second node should be as well. I waited for the proper lights to blink the specific color it was supposed to be before clicking next. When it came time to detect the node, it was found (it does this via bluetooth before it is connected to the rest of the mesh networ). It then failed to communicate back to the main node. This failed about 5 times and countless resets before I decided to move it to the same room as the main node. From there, the exact same steps continued to fail every time. I then tried the 3rd node, thinking maybe the second had issues. The same problems happened with the third. I eventually gave up, put the unit back in the box and plugged back in my other equipment (which also happens to be a mesh network that works absolutely flawlessly). I cannot really vouch for the longevity of this product, it's reliability, or it's features, as I was not able to even get mine setup to where I could use it properly. I have to assume I either got a bad unit, or, this product is just complete junk. I've had issues with reliability using a few other Linksys products in the past and tend to avoid them most of the time in favor of just about anything else. I was excited to try this one out as the reviews have seemed favorable and I am a fan of mesh networks as a whole. I have to say I am very disappointed in this unit as it stands today. I gave this unit 2 stars because the main unit works very well. I assume if I were to add 2 other larger nodes, my experience may be very different. These in-wall outlet nodes appears to be very weak and problematic.

      Hi elitegangsta,

We truly appreciate your taking the time to share your product review. Adding child nodes to your existing Velop network should always be a breeze once you have a Linksys Cloud Account and the parent node has an active internet connection, unless if it's a hardware issue. If you haven't returned the product yet, please reach out to us at [email protected] so we can have one of our Escalation Engineers work closely with you in sorting this out. I have had the pleasure of reviewing a lot of wifi routers this year, and all of them had their own benefits, whether it was range, aesthetics, simple set up, or speed. But none of them were able to cover all of these...until now. This Linksys Velop WiFi System checks all of the boxes. This is a very simple system as there isn't a lot of contents to the box. You have your main router node. two smaller nodes that plug into an outlet, an Ethernet cord, and some literature (warranty, quick start guide, etc). This is pretty much the theme of this system. Simplicity. Setting up this wifi system is by far the easiest system I have set up. There is no logging into your router's home page (192.xxx.x.x) and stumbling through settings, no setting of IP addresses to prevent conflict with the other nodes, nothing even remotely complicated. Your involvement with setting up this system is downloading the Linksys app on your phone, plugging in the nodes, and letting the app work its magic. The Linksys app does EVERYTHING for you. There is no doubt or confusion in setting up the system. Anyone can do it. Other companies, please take note of what Linksys has done here. It is simply amazing! After having all of the system in place and running, you will notice that the aesthetics of the system also follow the theme. Simple. Simple doesn't mean boring, but more along the lines of clean. There isn't a lot of markings or obnoxious lights, just a plain white housing with only the necessary variations from the clean white body. In an age of growing decorative routers, I really appreciate this simple blending in look. If you wanted to have the main node on display, you could do that too as it is slick and modern. It will not be an eyesore where ever you put it. The coverage is also amazing. This system is an internet blanket that will keep your entire household of internet users warm all winter long! I am getting the same speed (+/- 1 mbps) sitting right next to the main node as I am in the opposite side of the house. This system is a dead zone killer! Probably my favorite aspect of the entire system other than the coverage is that the coverage is provided through a single network that seamlessly meshes together without any dips in performance. There isn't a different listed network for the different bands or secondary networks like I had in my previous set up with a main router upstairs and a slave router downstairs. Everything is ONE. I have a security system and live feed cameras around my house and always went back and forth of which camera was connected to which band on what network. But not with this system. Just like with the setup, Linksys has you taken care of. The system decides which band is better for you and is self healing. Otherwise, if one node is not performing or is offline, the other nodes will pick up the slack without a hiccup. Obviously a router system will not make your internet faster, but the coverage that this system provides sure makes it feel like my wifi package was upgraded. There are a few things that I would like to see added to this system, but none of them are deal breakers. First, the main node only has 2 Ethernet ports. One that connects to the modem, and a second that can be plugged in to something that needs a hard line. But if you have multiple devices that an actual cord (PC, Gaming Console, Etc) you will need to buy a hub. Also, the secondary nodes do not have ethernet port access. A lot of range extenders have these, and I thought that these nodes would come with the ability to plug into them, but they do not. Again, not something that would sway my decision on whether to buy this system, just something to note for your network planning. Overall, this Linksys Velop Wifi Mesh system is AMAZING. If you are struggling with range or have a lot of wifi devices that demand a strong signal, this system will solve most, if not all of your needs. This is worth every penny.

This mesh system works great (3700 sq ft house). Setup is easy too. I have the base on the main level, a mesh unit upstairs, and a unit in the basement. I recently added an additional unit to expand coverage out into my yard. Definitely recommend.

The nodes are extremely easy to setup with the Linksys app. The speed is great but the WiFi reach is just okay. There isn’t a lot of WiFi flexibility with adjusting the nodes connection or removing previous WiFi devices which is why I docked one star.

I bought this pack for a 2500 square foot home. The main tri-band unit gave me the same throughput (70 Mbps) as a direct wired connection to my cable modem (70Mbps is my top tier speed on my internet plan) . I proceeded to hook up the AC plug-in "dual ban" units at the remote areas of my home and although they worked, the speed through these was about 50% of the main node. They extended the range but a cost of speed. I returned them and bought a 2 pack tri-band velops pack and after installing both tri-band units , I am getting the same high speed (70 Mbps) in all areas of the home. I think the plug in AC units are dual band so they don't have the backhaul capacity to keep the speed up between the main node and the remote units. If you have the space to place the larger tri-band units, I would recommend those instead of the plug in dual band AC units

      Hi BrianS,

The Velop network regardless if it's a combination of dual-band and tri-band nodes shouldn't cause the bandwidth to cut in half for the farthest nodes. We regret to hear that you already returned the non-working nodes as we could have requested one of our Escalation Engineers to take a closer look at your setback.

Should you need a hand with your current Velop System, feel free to contact us directly at [email protected]. We'd be more than happy to serve you.

This Linksys Velop system was purchase because it was on-sale, which made it a Good Deal for us. We had already purchased the Best Buy Pro package, because of previous problems with our WiFi. Discounting a scheduling foul-up with Geek Squad, the installer arrived on time, and was very easy to deal with. It took him over an hour to install a new NetGear modem and this Linksys wifi. There was a long conversation with Spectrum to change and authorize the Modem, then at least 45 minutes to install and "pair" the 3 pieces of the Router. The overall result is a wonderfully fast, smooth wifi anywhere in our 1500 square foot home, and outside areas. Great performance and a good choice for us!

I tried the unit below this one and when I got home found it was only for a maximum 100 speed internet. It would actually hit higher speeds, but we went with this unit. This one the pods plug into the outlet so you don’t have to find a place to stand the pod. It set up easy but the 5g range seems real limited. I used to be able to reach our 2.4g from down the street but the 5 does not register much outside of the house. I have a ring camera system and I could not get it to connect to this router. After some trial and error I found that even though it has both 2.4 and 5g it would only try and connect to the 5g. Ring only works on 2.4. I had to separate the channels to make it work. Now when I am at a distance it does not automatically switch to the stronger signal on my other devices and I just loose connection.
