Works well, some drawbacks aren't obvious

Works as described, call quality seems fine, but be aware of some unique drawbacks not mentioned in other reviews. If you have a lot of old phones from the 80s, it might not ring them if you have more than two connected (like if you plug this into the wall phone jack to run your whole house after you've disconnected the phone company from your house wiring). If you have a somewhat modern cordless phone set, it'll be fine because those have a low ringer equivalence number (REN), but the old 80s phones each have a REN of 1.0 and the MagicJack can only power a couple. The phone company typically would let you have a total of REN 5.0. You can buy a Viking Model RG-10A Ring Booster to ring up to 12 old handsets, but it's far cheaper to just buy a new (or used) cordless phone set and retire all but one or two of the old 80s phones. The other thing about the MagicJack that wasn't obvious before purchase was that the Caller ID does give the number but it does not give the name of the caller. Depending on the model you have, you can (with a Panasonic set, for example) configure your cordless handset to read/display a phonebook entry's name when that number calls, but that doesn't work for callers who aren't in your phone's entry list. It'll just show the number and you have to guess if it's someone you know or not. You can set your Caller ID name (what others see when you call) to whatever you want, and it'll take a few days for the change to occur. Whatever number MagicJack gives you might still have some old data for the first few days, so don't be confused during your early testing if you call your landline with the MagicJack and see a stranger's name on your landline's Caller ID. The MagicJack company adds a 9% fee to everything you do on their webpage (e.g., porting a phone number is supposed to be $19.99 but they add $1.80 and then the state also adds their tax). It's annoying but not as bad as the recurring $16+ per month taxes on the legacy landline this replaces. Yearly renewals will probably also get an extra 9% plus state sales tax above their advertised price. After the year of service that comes with the device, you can buy extra years with a bulk discount as shown in the attached photo. Otherwise, the rest of the drawbacks are well known. It won't work if your internet is down or during a power outage like the old landline, so make sure you have this (and your internet modem+router) plugged into a battery-backed uninterruptable power supply (UPS). You have a pay a few extra bucks for the e911 to be linked to your address, but again this is still far cheaper than keeping a legacy landline. It's powered by a simple USB power brick, so if the one that comes with the MagicJack fails, you can use almost any old USB phone/tablet charger to replace it (make sure it's 5V and at least 1A, but higher Amps is OK). The other thing I wasn't sure about before buying this was whether or not you have to port your old landline number right away at initialization or if you get a temporary number. The answer is that you get a free number included in the price of your MagicJack and can use that for your initial testing and experiments. Later (or never), you can port your old landline number to the MagicJack for the $19.99 (plus fees and taxes). Overall, this is a good way to have a home phone without paying $50-60 per month after all the goofy fees and taxes the legacy phone company charges.

I've use a Magic Jack since about 2012. I love Magic VIOP. The app works good on my android phone. This device was purchased for my sister. She finally decided to cut the landland phone cord and let me connect her to Magic Jack. By doing so she is saving money every monthly. With Magic Jack VIOP your pay $49 yearly. Or like I did when I first got my Magic Jack, I paid for 5 yrs. in advance. At that time the cost was only $36 per year. Yes, I recommend Magic Jack to all my friends & family.

Only thing needed is internet service. Easy to contact customer service thru chat. They walked me thru whole set up STEP BY STEP. Connects right into your modem & electrical outlet. I cut the cost of a phone bill. No more monthly bill, no bill for one whole year. Pay one LOW price yearly. Should have purchased this YEARS AGO. I would have saved SOOOOO MUCH MONEY! Denise

Best and easiest to use IP phone land line system. You can also use the same number on your cell phone with their app. User since the 2000s when it was only hooked up to a PC. A must if traveling abroad! It allows SMSs too.

After 20+ years, I finally pulled the plug and left the phone company I had been using and moved to Magic Jack. Best decision ever. Easy to install and customer service is fantastic. I would recommend this product if you are looking to keep a landline in your home and looking to save money!

I have used MJ for a number of years and it works great. I recently upgraded my old device. Although the cost for service has increased over the past few years it's still much cheaper than monthly home service. The app which allows you to receive calls via your cell phone make this product ever better. Now I can either use a home phone or answer from my cell phone when I'm away. I never miss a call.

Seems okay, I've Had problems. I had it before never got hacked, only time shall tell. It was easily installed and there are other features and things that comes with it which I'm not sure what all they are. Took the PC into the BB to have it installed with the geek squad there was no charges for the upgrades.

You CAN use it in a multistory house! Here's how!

I HATED running up or downstairs looking for a phone! Buying MAGIC JACK saved money AND fixed the problem of chasing phones in a multi story house. Our family have multiple extensions our bedrooms, living room, kitchen, and even in the basement! The "plus" factor is the upgrade at home to a MESH system for internet where each hub also has ethernet sockets so MAGIC JACK can be plugged directly into a MESH hub for better internet connections. I've used MAGIC JACK for decades and love it for home use. It saves a TON of money over the use of corporate telephone providers. If you have a large house and need EXTENSIONS on different floors, LOOK FOR ANY CORDLESS PHONE by any of the main companies: AT&T, PANASONIC, V-TEC or any that has extensions. I have the AT&T 2-line phone using TWO MAGIC JACK numbers - one for "WORK AT HOME" to keep my work calls isolated from personal ones. The other is for personal use for calls from family and friends. The hardware with CONNECT-TO-CELL also has this additional advantage. On a ONE-LINE "connect-to-cell" (AT&T brand home landline phone) you can plug your cell phone to charge it at the base... and you can also answer or make cell phone calls from any extension! For any extension, you can answer or call (with the 2-line model) 2 distinct landline numbers plus 2 different cell phone numbers. In a bigger living space, you can leave your cell phone with the base while charging, answer or make calls FROM the cell phone on any extension, and another person can use the OTHER number on a different extension independently while another line is in use on a different extension. Connect to Cell™ technology gives you both in one phone system. As an aside when the pandemic began, I assisted several small nonprofit businesses in setting up MAGIC JACK and CONNECT TO CELL AT&T phones to replace their office phones at the home of several of their administrative workers. These really work well and save a significant amount of money also.

    Home phone on a budget

Duh! If your old like me and don't always have your cell up your butt, and you have wires in your home for Phones or just one jack and a base with satellite phones; that you may even be paying big bucks to the company everyone hates. You can now disconnect them from your provider and even keep your old number (for a $20 fee) and plug them into the magic jack. and have a phone next to every recliner. for a fraction of the cost of the evil empire. and the sound quality is great. Now the downside is, I've had magic jacks in the past and they seem to eventually get noisy, hopefully that problems been fixed with their latest offering, but even if it's not been properly fixed, it's not that expensive to replace every couple of years, with some of the money you'll save on this device.

Great device to ditch AT&T or any telecom company. I was paying $45 MONTHLY for a home phone purchased the magicJack for $40 for both the device and the whole year, plus a one time payment of $20 for transfering my number (no need to pay the $20 if getting a new number). Set up was not hard (just follow the directions). The only bad thing is that the phone that I currently had (a panasonic that I purchase 3 years ago) did not work with it (I could place phone calls, but I couldn't receive) so I bought a cheap $35 vtech with 2 handsets and VOILA. Now I don't have to pay anything anymore till the renewal date, which it will be cheaper the more years plan I choose. One of the plans I think is like for 5 year for $130 (the whole 5 years) hahahah that would have been 3 months of big telecom companies. One other thing is that they're customer service, is not very reliable. It takes very long for them to attend the call and are not very experts, but hey is $40 a year versus $45 a month or $540 a year. By the way they have like an add on, is called concierge which is a one time payment of $15 and you are supposed to get an enhanced support... I don't know how good it is, haven't used it but I'll bet that is better than the customer service they offer. One more thing I forgot to mention, the little device (a dongle) works with internet and is attached to the router (or internet if your modem has an extra RJ45 slot). If you don't have internet it will not work. By the way landlines phone lines from big telecoms now adays are also connected to the internet (digitally) even though they make you believe they are analog because you see them attached to the wall. Anyways. I have been using it for 2 months so far and no complains.

The magicJack was very easy to set up and transfer/keep my old number. And it provides phone service at a very affordable annual cost (~$50 for me). However, it won't let me call in to some work conference call lines - indicating that the service does not recognize the number and it may require an additional pay-per-minute fee. I reached out to magicJack to get the conference call number approved, and they still won't allow it. At this price, I am keeping magicJack for most phone service and will just use my cell phone for conference calls. Good - but can be better. These are local conferece call lines I am using.

After researching a number of options, I chose magicJack Home based on other positive reviews from long-time subscribers along with favorable initial cost, yearly cost, and simplicity. After using the service for 3 weeks, I am very happy with my decision. My landline phone number was ported in 6 days for a fee of $19.95 + $1.20 sales tax. Additional costs include a $1.80 administrative fee and a yearly E911 fee of $19.80 (the same amount that I was charged by my former service provider. The E911 fee may be different in your area). No unexpected additional costs were charged at sign-up. The magicJack has worked fine. Calls are clear and without glitches. I knew before purchasing that I would have to forego Caller ID by name (ID by number is supported). I have people’s names in my cordless phone’s address book, so our phone speaks those names when a call comes in; otherwise, it speaks the caller’s number which isn’t that helpful. Hopefully, Caller ID by name will be supported in the future. I purchased magicJack so that I could keep my landline number and not have to continue paying for expensive cable TV bundles that included phone service. I have not yet explored additional features or the magicApp.

I’ve had a MagicJack 2nd line for many years. The line and voice quality was never quite good enough to ditch my main line. However with their latest hardware, it is and I did. Porting my main number over was cheap and easy and I’m saving about $30/mo. If you’re old school and like a home phone, and have good broadband, this works.
