Works as described, call quality seems fine, but be aware of some unique drawbacks not mentioned in other reviews. If you have a lot of old phones from the 80s, it might not ring them if you have more than two connected (like if you plug this into the wall phone jack to run your whole house after you've disconnected the phone company from your house wiring). If you have a somewhat modern cordless phone set, it'll be fine because those have a low ringer equivalence number (REN), but the old 80s phones each have a REN of 1.0 and the MagicJack can only power a couple. The phone company typically would let you have a total of REN 5.0. You can buy a Viking Model RG-10A Ring Booster to ring up to 12 old handsets, but it's far cheaper to just buy a new (or used) cordless phone set and retire all but one or two of the old 80s phones. The other thing about the MagicJack that wasn't obvious before purchase was that the Caller ID does give the number but it does not give the name of the caller. Depending on the model you have, you can (with a Panasonic set, for example) configure your cordless handset to read/display a phonebook entry's name when that number calls, but that doesn't work for callers who aren't in your phone's entry list. It'll just show the number and you have to guess if it's someone you know or not. You can set your Caller ID name (what others see when you call) to whatever you want, and it'll take a few days for the change to occur. Whatever number MagicJack gives you might still have some old data for the first few days, so don't be confused during your early testing if you call your landline with the MagicJack and see a stranger's name on your landline's Caller ID. The MagicJack company adds a 9% fee to everything you do on their webpage (e.g., porting a phone number is supposed to be $19.99 but they add $1.80 and then the state also adds their tax). It's annoying but not as bad as the recurring $16+ per month taxes on the legacy landline this replaces. Yearly renewals will probably also get an extra 9% plus state sales tax above their advertised price. After the year of service that comes with the device, you can buy extra years with a bulk discount as shown in the attached photo. Otherwise, the rest of the drawbacks are well known. It won't work if your internet is down or during a power outage like the old landline, so make sure you have this (and your internet modem+router) plugged into a battery-backed uninterruptable power supply (UPS). You have a pay a few extra bucks for the e911 to be linked to your address, but again this is still far cheaper than keeping a legacy landline. It's powered by a simple USB power brick, so if the one that comes with the MagicJack fails, you can use almost any old USB phone/tablet charger to replace it (make sure it's 5V and at least 1A, but higher Amps is OK). The other thing I wasn't sure about before buying this was whether or not you have to port your old landline number right away at initialization or if you get a temporary number. The answer is that you get a free number included in the price of your MagicJack and can use that for your initial testing and experiments. Later (or never), you can port your old landline number to the MagicJack for the $19.99 (plus fees and taxes). Overall, this is a good way to have a home phone without paying $50-60 per month after all the goofy fees and taxes the legacy phone company charges.

I've use a Magic Jack since about 2012. I love Magic VIOP. The app works good on my android phone. This device was purchased for my sister. She finally decided to cut the landland phone cord and let me connect her to Magic Jack. By doing so she is saving money every monthly. With Magic Jack VIOP your pay $49 yearly. Or like I did when I first got my Magic Jack, I paid for 5 yrs. in advance. At that time the cost was only $36 per year. Yes, I recommend Magic Jack to all my friends & family.

Only thing needed is internet service. Easy to contact customer service thru chat. They walked me thru whole set up STEP BY STEP. Connects right into your modem & electrical outlet. Best and easiest to use IP phone land line system. You can also use the same number on your cell phone with their app. User since the 2000s when it was only hooked up to a PC. A must if traveling abroad! It allows SMSs too.

After 20+ years, I finally pulled the plug and left the phone company I had been using and moved to Magic Jack. Best decision ever. Easy to install and customer service is fantastic. I would recommend this product if you are looking to keep a landline in your home and looking to save money!
