Customers have good things to say about the Surface Pro's portability, light weight, and battery life. Many appreciate its performance and the fact that it functions well as a tablet. However, some customers find the price to be high and wish it had more USB ports. The lack of an included pen is also a point of concern for some buyers.

I have been a Mac person ever since I gave up on Microsoft-based laptops & computers in 2008. never thought that Microsoft could compare to the stability and innovation of Apple products. I stand corrected! This tablet is a great computer. This computer is a great tablet. Need I say more? It is fast, it is lightweight, it is beautiful. No iPad can compare. I can expand its memory. I can use the apps I used on my desktop. I can be on the go. It is like coming back from the "dark side"!

Before entering my review, I'll explain the context of why I purchased the Surface Pro. I needed something portable to read academic journals and mark PDFs, while still being able to handle typical office stuff like PowerPoint, Word. I did tons (literally hours) of research, agonizing for days over whether to go with a new 10.5 iPad Pro or the Surface. In the end, I had the opportunity to try both, and - spoiler alert - I ended up keeping the Surface Pro.
The build is superb, the industrial angles look sleek, and the screen is fantastic. The [rather expensive] catch is that to make the Surface Pro be all Microsoft envisions, you have to dump an extra $99 minimum to add the Pen, and then another $150 to get the keyboard, which, is not an insignificant investment.
I opted for the middle of the pack, the i5 with higher memory capacity rather than the i7 because I wanted the fanless (i.e. quieter) version, and I'm not disappointed.
The main negative with the iPad Pro from a work/productivity standpoint was the new changes with iOS 11, although significant, still fall far short of an actual desktop OS. Furthermore, even though it's not a knock against the actual iPad, the official Apple smart keyboard was dismal to type on. The chiclet keys were really aesthetically pleasing which is par for the course for Apple, but even though I wouldn't say I have particularly gargantuan hands, I found myself making way too many typos and looking down to physically locate keys.
The Microsoft keyboard, sold separately, types much better and the keys feel more akin to a regular desktop keyboard. The tradeoff is that the Microsoft keyboard flexes more than the Apple.
The Surface pen works great, and being able to hotkey my most used functions to the onboard eraser button makes my workflow more efficient.
If you don't particularly need a pen functionality, then I'd say skip the Surface Pro and just get an actual laptop, as there are tradeoffs as mentioned above. But, if you're specifically looking for a work-use device that handles pen utility, then take a good look at the Surface Pro. Most, if not all, of the major criticisms against the Surface 4 have been addressed with the Surface Pro 2017... except for the confusing nomenclature.

I had held out as long as I could to buy a new tablet. I waited for the latest Surface Pro to finally hit the shelves and I was not disappointed. The surface pro is a fantastically designed product. The bevels are perfectly radiused, the thickness of the entire tablet is not too big and not too small, and the weight is not as bad as you would think. The kickstand is one of the best features! I was amazed at how much I used to prop up my iPad or use the case as a stand. The hardware inside (i5, 8gb RAM, and 256gb HD) is perfect. The fanless design keeps the heat disapated across the entire back of the tablet instead of one location. It is very easy to adjust the power setting to extend the battery life or utilize the processor. Windows 10 is fantastic on this device. Switching to tablet mode or laptop mode could not be easier.
The negative:
First the negative for the device. To get the most out of the laptop component of the surface, you really need the keyboard (sold separately from $80 to $130). This is kind of irritating since you are already dumping a good chunk of change on the tablet itself. To really get the full functionality out of the tablet piece, I recommend buying the pen. This runs an extra $100. If you do a lot of document markups or drawing editing, this is crucial for you. If you like to sketch or doodle, you need the pen!
The last negative is the lack of apps. Truth be told, if you need to access something without the app you can always use the Edge web browser. However, if you are in tablet mode all the time this can become a pain.
So all that said, I highly recommend this product. It is seriously the best money I have spent in a long time.

The display and performance is everything you would expect from Surface. The ease of use as a tablet is great. I love the keyboard. Has a good feel and the back-lighting is just right to illuminate the keys without being a distraction. My use is primarily for email and home business. It does everything I would need from a laptop and has the fun of being a very portable tablet too. I would like to see another USB port. I like using an external mouse and flash drives for transferring data. To do both, I have to use a USB hub. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase.

Surface pro created this 2-in-1 category and it is still the best. It is best for people who need to carry around a computer for things. As a tablet the app store is lacking and as a laptop it is severely overpriced, but it is light and powerful enough to be both. Looks and feels like a premium device. Popular enough for Apple to copy it.

Close to a laptop replacement, but not yet

Read all the reviews on the new surface pro and decided to give it a try. After all, looked very promising and I really wanted to replace my laptop and tablet in one go. This would have ideally solved my needs in that regard. So the i5 256 gig and 8gb ram is the sweet spot for the current surface pro line up. I think ,most people should get this unless, they need higher specs for specific reasons. There is diminishing results from this model and up, unless you are in the minority who genuinely need it. I mean surface pro is already a premium overpriced product. But again, to replace two devices i would be okay paying that price. Dissappointing that microsoft doesn't include a pen or a keyboard- almost every other competitor does. Again i think microsoft is trying a bit hard to be in that apple entitlement.
Anyway, let me put the Pros here-
Build- Love the build quality and fell of the device. It feels nice to touch and hold.
Screen- Gorgeous screen, resolution and aspect ratio are perfect. IPS display colors are accurate. There is plenty of reviews praising the screen.
Performance- Performance is fine. I haven't had any hiccups yet. I open a million chrome tabs (okay, not literally, but more like 25-50) and it seems to be handling all that fine. The star of the show is the fanless core i5 in this system. I think its an amazing engineering feat microsoft achieved here. If you read reviews and do googling you cna find that the fanless by no way means microsoft is cutting corners on the processor, undervolting or undercloking it. In fact the i5 is better the mainstream laptop i5s. So that is pretty cool. Although, there is a little electronic noise, if you listen close to the vents in a very silent room. Again this is nitpicking. I don't do any gaming, so i can't comment on that. But for general browsing, media/ streaming/ office tools this should be plenty enough.
Fanless cooling- peaking of fanless, how hot does this get? you would be surprised. One would think with no active cooling+ a good no undervolted cpu, this would be hot to use, esp in this era of mostly overheating devices (see my asus review). But this doesn't. It is cool as a cucumber for most part. If you stress the system too much, it gets a little warm on the back, but nothing unbearable to touch or anything.
Cons:-
Display glare: There is one downside most people don't mention- the screen glare is way too much. Again you compare with a macbook with glossy screen and the macbook screen is less relfective than this screen. I am hoping an anti glare screen protector might help here.
Connectivity: I wish MS put a *&*& thunderbolt 3 port on this one, for egpu support, but whatever. They decided to put a mini display port, a usb a and their proprietary charger port on this thing. if you google their explanation for no usb c or thunderbolt, you will laugh. Seriously, that proprietary charging port does no good other than for this surface pro and is gonna be obselete in no time. They could have easily put a usb c charging port to make ti future proof. Instead, they wanted to play that game where they decide what is best for customer. MS explanation- "usb c is too confusing for most customers and we don't want customers to end up using wrong cables and such". And the next thing you hear- they are releasing a usb c dongle soon. (?). Overall, uggh, when every other manufacturer is pushing towards a more standard one port solution and microsoft is dialing two steps back for some reason.
Value for money: I really can't tell if this is good value for moeny yet. I mean compared to a macbook- of course yeah, but compared to other competitors- hp, samsung, asus ,lenovo etc. this is not very competitvely priced. I bought this using my student discount coupon. I wouldn't buy this for the retail price, unless ms decides to put a keyboard and or a pen with this.
Neutral:- Battery life could be better. 7 hours of general browing and media streaming. This is more of an engineering problem fitting a high capacity battery in a portablle tablet. But microsoft could possibly improve the batttery life by more software optimization maybe. I dunno, again this is mostly an negineering problem and i can't really put this as a con. There are some realities we as consumers have to accept. There are some realities the manufacturers should accept as well- like the thunderbolt 3/ usb c! I am brining this up again, because due to the battery life limitations, it would be nice to have usb c charging so i could have a single cable and solve most of my device power needs.
Other than the usb c/ thunderbolt 3 (again), screen glare and price. it is pretty hard to find any faults with this device.
I got a wacom bamboo ink pen with this and man it is the best pen experience i have had. Feels like writing real time on a paper. This should be copied by every other manufacturer.
Overall ugh- i like it , i wanna hate it, but i like it more then.
I would recommend it to a friend, then i won't, but i would again. IIt is a contradicting relationship i have with this device.

There are lot of 2in1 offers in the market, but this product is the best.
It consolidates the power of Intel core iX proccesors with well engineered hardware, making real portable and powerfull.
In this edition you have no fan coolers, so no mobile pieces inside, which makes a longer life for the product.
The only reason because I dont put 5 stars is that only have 256GB HDD option for core i5, I would prefer a longer drive. To jump a 512GB you have to choose core i7 and the difference in price is really huge.

A few days ago, I purchased a 2017 Surface Pro (i5, 8gb, 256gb) after looking at a number of similar devices. I chose the SP i5 based on its great display, relatively light weight, its fanless design, and the positive reviews I have seen on it.
For the most part, the SP lives up to the hype. The display is excellent. Its overall performance is quite good. Startup and shutdown times are reasonably quick. The SP handles most apps/programs that I have thrown at it without missing a beat. The speakers have good volume, and aren't bad at all compared to similar devices. The SP is somewhat sparse on ports, but I don't need many, so that's no issue. Construction seems to be high-quality and solid. Despite having a true i5 and no fan, the device never gets very warm.
Its cable/charging cord is a little short. You need to buy the Type Cover to get the most out of this device. The pen is optional, depending on how you will use the SP.
Here's the one thing to be aware of: don't trust the reviews too much. On the reviews, you'll see that the SP comes with a Samsung SSD that seems to have excellent performance. My SP, however, came with a Toshiba SSD (that never seems to be on the reviewer's devices) which offers more modest performance numbers. Granted that Microsoft never promises that ALL its SPs have the Samsung SSD. But to put those out there for reviewers creates a false impression, at the very least. Buyer beware, as far as that goes.
On the other hand, I have not seen some of the problems that some users have had with their SPs - such as light bleed.
Overall, I am quite pleased with the SP. I am less than pleased with Microsoft's marketing tactics that involve reviewers. Having components from various sources in a device may be common practice, but it does not inspire much confidence in the manufacturer. The only exception would be if it was shown that the Toshiba drives performed in real world usage just as well as the Samsungs. We shall see.
Still, even with this caveat, I can recommend the SP.

While this tablet/laptop might appear small, it functions as a giant! The new Surface Pro (2017) has increased battery life, super fast start-up/shut-down and comes with Intel’s latest generation processors. I have the i5 model with 8 GB RAM and it performs amazingly fast even when multitasking and heavy data transfer. I honestly haven’t had a better experience with Windows 10 than when using the Surface Pro; it handles everything so smoothly. I would highly recommend this PC to anyone requiring desktop capability in a portable platform. Perfect for creators and designers of all types!

After researching between the iPad pro and the Surface Pro 5 a few months later I feel like I made the right decision. I like the true flexibility of the Surface Pro switching between a laptop and tablet. I would imagine the Surface Pro is definitely closer to a laptop than the iPad pro would have been. By no means am I an Apple hater, I do have an iPhone.
My main uses are planning training sessions for soccer, emailing, web browsing and watching live tv.
Overall, the battery life, flexibility between tablet/laptop and the ease of use have been my favorite things about the Surface Pro 5. I would highly recommend.

I recently bought the Surface Pro to replace my aging laptop. After careful consideration I decided to make the purchase and truly hoped it would be all I hoped for. So far, it has not let me down. The processor (Intel I5) is plenty quick, and matched with the SSD it is no less than completely remarkable. There are other reviews out there with all the pros and cons of this device, and while there are plenty of both, in my opinion, the pros have it. As for the cons... The price is high, as has bee noted by plenty of other people. However, when you consider the fact that this is a tablet AND a laptop, it really isn't all that expensive. In fact, it's rather cheap. Given the fact that a decent laptop will run you between $750 and $1200, with a decent tablet will run you $600 - $800, getting the surface pro for between $1000 - $1500 its really is cheaper to buy the surface pro. Additionally, the aditional keyboard witch is $115, and the mouse with is $80, and the pen witch is $99... The surface pro add ons is what kills the advantage. The single USB port is a major drawback, however, with a bit of research a mini hub can be had fairly cheap correcting that issue. I decided with the standard keyboard, and used my old blue-tooth mouse, along with the purchase of a 2T GB external for movies and music storage. I really see no need for the pen, so I saved nearly a couple hundred bucks in add ons. I also got a decent case, which protects everything but the screen, however if the keyboard is connected the screen is protected via the keyboard back.
Overall, I highly recommend the Surface Pro, but to keep cost down, do the research for the add on's and then go for it!

i5 with 8GB RAM is the sweet spot

I think the new Surface Pro with i5 7300U and 8 GB RAM is the sweet spot between the performance and cost. The Intel HD Graphics 620 is capable to drive an external monitor with 4K at 60 Hz and many games by standard. i5 7300U has better base frequency (2.5 GHz) when comparing it with i7 7660U in i7 edition; so the basic tasks will be comparable. I am not a big fan of a lot of storage on the tab like device. I think 256 GB is more than enough for most of the daily needs. For extra space, an external SSD would be the most affordable and practical solution.
Only place it falls short is 8 GB RAM; approximately 7 GB RAM of 8 GB max would be easily consumed when 10 tabs on Chrome, 10 tabs on Edge, Outlook running with the work and personal account, 2-3 Microsoft Word, 2 Excel, Skype for Business etc. are kept open concurrently. Having said that, I did not find any performance issues in testing.
In my humble opinion, i7 7660U with 8 GB RAM has no advantage over the i5 version with 8 GB RAM except the higher graphics (Intel Iris Plus 640) and higher turbo frequency i7 7660U has (4 GHz vs 3.5 GHz). The shortage of RAM will haunt us here in this model as well.
The i7 model with 16 GB RAM is definitely a value add, but a premium cost of $1000 extra.

I spent a really, REALLY long time trying to decide whether my next mobile computing device would be a Surface Pro, iPad Pro, or MacBook after the display on my 2011 MacBook Air began to fizzle out. Apple's latest offerings really frustrated me due to the fact that they refuse to adopt touchscreen technology in their Macs (resorting only to a wishy-washy, half-step, clearly transitional solution in the Touch Bar). At the same time, the Surface Pro 4 was full of bugs and the battery life from what I had heard was pretty awful. I would have loved to have picked the iPad Pro for its size and battery life but there are too many programs I need to be able to use on a regular basis that cannot be replicated by the iPad Pro. So when the Surface Pro 2017 came out, I took a deep breath and made the jump.
The biggest thing I've missed about coming back from a Mac is the ease of Continuity between apps. There's none of the pick-up-where-you-left-offness that you might have gotten from your iPhone and MacBook. The other thing I miss is the ability to answer iMessages, phone calls and FaceTime calls from your MacBook. I should mention that Microsoft is currently working on more or less solutions to these issues, but they're all awkward because Apple purposely rigs their phones for competitive advantages when used with Macs, and because of MSFT's general incompetency they aren't meeting their planned deadlines for releasing such features as of yet. I also miss the fact that some things I've gotten used to having, such as iCloud Photo Library, where my photo edits synced seamlessly and nondestructively from my phone to my MacBook, is now clunkily replicated on the Windows version, where the changes ARE destructive and require that you constantly make new copies of the photos you choose to edit, and you also have to manually re upload photos you've edited back into iCloud.
So those are the things that I've missed since switching, and on top of that I do notice that for all the progress it's made since I left, Windows 10 is still somewhat buggier than MacOS, or at least gives the perception of being buggier. But the things I LOVE about the Surface are HUGE. I LOVE that the screen is worlds better than my MacBook Air in a machine that costs about the same price. I LOVE that I have all the power of a complete desktop OS in a tablet form factor with a real keyboard that feels good to type on, unlike the iPad Pro, for all my academic work, and that the applications I use are not gimped the way a tablet's apps are. I LOVE the fact that the creative applications I DO use on a regular basis, like Adobe's Creative Cloud, are worlds better than the alternatives on iPad excepting the new Affinity Photo, and that those same apps are also better than what is on Mac because of the touchscreen that has made my workflow much faster, more intuitive, and much easier to implement. Once you have edited your photos using the Surface Pen it's really hard to go back to using a mouse. And the last thing is, I LOVE that all of these things came in a package that supplants the functionality that otherwise would have required a separate MacBook Pro and iPad Pro purchase for me, which saves me hundreds of dollars and gives me tons of portable versatility that I would never have experienced otherwise. Yes, it's been a tough jump to go back to Windows after 7 years of living all Apple. But it's a jump that I'm so happy to have made, and I think for those of you who are even less invested in Apple's paid subscription services than I am will find that it's an easier decision now than ever before.

The Surface Pro with the I5 chip and 8 GB Ram is a fast machine. It boots up in less than 10 seconds and with the 256 GB solid state drive you have plenty of memory. At 27.2 ounces this computer is light. The build quality is excellent. The screen resolution of 2736 X 1824 is beautiful. The front camera is 5 megapixels and the back camera is 8 megapixels so using Skype or Zoom gives crystal clear video. Another nice feature is face recognition so signing in is a breeze. I really enjoy using this computer and I’ve had it less than two weeks.

The new Surface Pro is fast, light and easy to use. The keyboard (added on) is one that has an awesome feel and is great for fast typers.

After much deliberation, I purchased this Surface Pro about a month and a half ago. So far, I love it! The machine is very lightweight, and I have found it useful both as a computer and tablet. With other bend-back laptops, I didn’t care for how when I bent the keyboard all the way back to “tablet” mode, I could feel the keys pressing behind my hands as I held the device. With the Surface, it truly is as though I’m holding a tablet. So far, I am still exploring everything the laptop can do, but I am definitely interested in getting the hang of the pen, too. As a grad student, taking notes by hand directly into my computer would be a great asset!
I have only one main complaint. First, because of the portability of the Surface Pro, it means buying lots of additional accessories: external disk drive, adapters with additional USB and memory card ports, etc. I am also planning to invest in a good external hard drive, since I have an online business that requires taking lots of photos, and the laptop’s memory is only 256GB. That being said, the Surface Pro is perfectly fitting my needs because of its portability, awesome battery life, and fulfilling dual roles as a more entertainment-oriented tablet and a solid work computer.
