Confused on what happened here

For some reason when I used this on my XBOX ONE it said something to the extent that I had "redeemed 3months for XBOX 360 and that these would become available once backwards compatibility came online." My Gold membership almost expired and I had to go get another 3month card and use it on my 360 to make sure it was still active.
