The Motorola B12 modem was easy to setup through my xfinity app. I struggled with the Motorola app. It kept saying this model is not supported in the app. Strange because in the instructions it says you can use the app. Fortunately, I connected through Xfinity. I have 1.2gb service and this modem is capable of 2.5gb service. Make sure you have at least 1gb in order to use this modem. Less service than 1gb will cause slower response. This information was provided by Motorola. The modem has been flawless. I find there have been 'no signal drops' in the week I've owned the modem. There is zero lag. The modem immediately connected with my mesh routers and together there has been no issues. No conflicts. This modem supports all the current standards with DOCSIS 3.1 Connectivity is great with all my devices, phone, tv, and computer. The modem is small in size and doesn't have the traditional bank of upload, download, power, connectivity lights of other modems. It has 1 singular dot of light when on. During setup there is a set of blinking sequences of that one light that mean different things. Personally, I like this small footprint. This modem will save you a lot of money versus renting from your cable provider. It is insane to me why anyone would rent their modem from the cable provider in this day and age. The app needs work, but in reality if you have one of the big cable companies you can setup the new modem through them. Motorola needs to do a better job on the app. It is far from a deal breaker though. Frankly, it is just an annoyance. I think Motorola has an excellent modem here. The modem is backed by a one year warranty.

The Motorola B12 is the smallest modem I’ve ever seen—its design resembles more of a Bluetooth speaker than a traditional modem. It features a sleek and simple with no buttons (aside from reset), a single Ethernet port and an indicator light at the base. Setup was simple and straightforward. I was replacing an old modem that had given me countless issues for the past 3 years, so I was prepared for potential complications. However, activation was as simple as calling my internet provider and reading off the MAC address for them to send a signal. Please keep in mind, this modem requires a separate router. In my case, I paired it with an Asus ZenWiFi system, and to my surprise, the router immediately recognized the new modem and established a connection within two minutes of plugging it in. I tried to access the modem’s internal settings via direct connection using the desktop, but I was unable to log in using the default IP address. I'm sure I could figure out a workarounds, but since my internet was working as expected, I left the settings untouched. The cable technician was impressed by the signal strength, especially when compared to my previous modem. Overall, I’m extremely happy with the Motorola B12, mainly due to the ease of use and compact size.

    Simple Modem, Fast Internet

Thinking about bringing your own modem? You’re making the right call. Why pay your internet provider several extra dollars per month to lease a device you can get for about as much as a year’s worth of lease fees? Cable modems have been ubiquitous for most of America’s broadband internet services, and they’re readily available at Best Buy. Motorola, creators of the original and iconic “SURFboard” modems, are still in the game and are now offering devices supporting the latest DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem service. The SURFboard name may have been sold, and the Motorola B12 may not look like anything more than a bluetooth speaker, but it’s able to keep up with the fastest cable internet plans on offer today. A disclaimer: while most Internet Service Provider (ISP) plans allow you to bring your own modem, some may dictate what types of devices can and cannot be connected to their lines, and your plan may require you to use a provider’s gateway as opposed to bringing your own. Check your ISP’s support pages or contact their customer service prior to purchasing a modem. - Unboxing and Setup With little more than a quickstart guide and requisite power and ethernet cables, the Motorola B12 is a no-frills affair. As an Xfinity (Comcast) customer, I utilized the Xfinity app to register the modem (and deactivate my prior 32 x 8 DOCSIS 3.0 modem registration) with their service prior to connecting. The entire installation process was then very straightforward - I simply connected the coax line from the street into the new modem, connected my router via the 2.5G ethernet jack, and plugged the B12 into power. After finishing its handshake connection with Xfinity, the modem immediately downloaded and installed a firmware update, then rebooted to finish installation and connection. The entire process took about 10 to 15 minutes, and once online it acted exactly like my prior modem; that is to say - pretty seamlessly. - Performance With a 32 x 8 DOCSIS 3.1 connection, you can connect to your cable internet provider (if conditions and your plan allow) at speeds up to 10Gbps, but with only a 2.5Gbps ethernet jack on the modem and no other connection options, you will be limited to 2.5Gbps - not a major issue considering no cable provider, to my knowledge, offers a plan faster than 2Gbps today, and networking equipment capable of handling 10Gbps is still firmly outside the realm of consumer-grade networking hardware. With a 1-gigabit plan I was not expecting to see a noticeable increase in performance, but after moving to the new modem I found I was more consistently hitting 1000mbps down where I used to see 800-850 during higher-traffic hours. In hindsight, this was a bandwidth limitation of 32 x 8 DOCSIS 3.0… Besides speed, the biggest change in my internet was the latency and judder (variability in latency) of my connection - I saw my ping in competitive PC games improve from 75-100ms down to 65-80, with what seemed to be far fewer instances of warping and stuttering in my teammates and opponents. Websites also seem to load quicker, likely through the quicker DNS resolution occurring across the board with a lower-latency, more responsive modem. Small improvements across the board make for a snappier internet experience, after all. - User Interface & Motosync App This is the only area I can knock the modem itself for, and it’s a real nitpick if I ever had one. My previous modem had multiple indicator lights that corresponded to each of its functions, but the B12 has a single multicolor LED that only indicates different statuses by pulsing at slow speed, pulsing at fast speed, or as a static light. The back of the quickstart guide contains a chart deciphering what each of the colors and animations mean; I decided to leave this under the modem in case I ever need to debug. Would’ve been nice to see more straightforward options. There is also the Motosync app, available on Google Play and the Apple App Store, and it is yet another application that requires a separate account to use - a huge miss for data privacy. The app purports to let you control and manage your devices, the B12 included, through the phone interface to presumably monitor and control your home network. Unfortunately I could not get the app to find my modem, so what further functionality this enables is beyond my knowledge. - Bottom Line It’s a modem, and it works flawlessly. What more is there to say? Despite the annoyance of the status indicator, the B12 is a solid device delivering stable internet and the best speeds your cable ISP can provide. At an MSRP of $199.99, it’s competitive with most entry-level DOCSIS 3.1 modems, and if you’re already running a nice router of your own, you can’t go wrong with the Motorola B12. Recommended!

The Motorola B12 is an inexpensive way to fully utilize and take advantage of the internet services that you are paying for and to get rid of those pesky monthly modem rental fees. So, let’s dive right into what the Motorola B12 has to offer. Setup: The setup process can vary depending on your service provider, some may require you to call in and others, such as mine, which is Xfinity, allowed to activate the modem through the app. I simply disconnected my other modem, connected this one instead and went through the activation process through the Xfinity app. The modem took about 10 minutes to come online, and I was ready to go. Features: This is a multi-gig modem, meaning it can support speeds up to 2.5 Gbps down and up to 766 up, but I only get up to 2.3 down and 300 up, which was easily achieved. The modem features one 2.5 Gbps port your normal internet coaxial connection. It measures about 5.2 inches tall, 5.7 inches in length, 4 inches wide and weighs less than a pound, so it won’t take up much space and will blend in anywhere in your home. This modem will allow you to take advantage of the speeds that you are paying for and save money in the long run by saving you money on the modem rental fees. I would highly recommend that if you are in the market for a modem, to give the Motorola B12 a chance. You wont be disappointed.

Works good as a router, app not so much

I got this router to replace the one I was using, with the main benefit here that it has a 2.5 gb Ethernet cord to connect to your network while my old one did not. The unpacking was easy, and then just remove the old one, and plug in the Ethernet and connect it to the cable (then call your cable company, to activate the new one). For my setup, I am only using my provider for internet, and no TV and no phone, so this modem works, but you’d want to check based on your setup how to get things plugged in. My hookup is in the basement, so the look isn’t too important, but I would say this is the best-looking modem I’ve seen. If you end up having this somewhere in an open area, it looks more like a speaker than a modem. The light also is one light, and not a bunch of flashing lights that no one looks at. So, from that perspective, this is a nice modem. As far as performance goes, my internet speed has been about the same, but like I said I was replacing it more to get faster access to the modem. So, I would say that performance is good too beyond it just looking good. The part that gets me thought is the instructions tell you to download the motosync app. But then when you connect it and sign it, it just tells that you cannot use the app. I would skip this as its useless. If the app did anything, like pause the internet at home, or anything like that, it might make sense, but the way it is now is confusing and a waste. Containing on the weird design choices in the software, if you connect to the modem through a web browser, there isn’t anything you can actually do there. The nice thing is there is decent security, as there is a custom password for one time log in. Once in, you can see the mac address, but you can't for example, upgrade the firmware, or even see your IP address. So overall, if you need a modem that looks good, this one is great. If all you need is a modem, and from the cost side this is cheaper, it is a good option. But if you want a modem that can do a little more, you might want to look at some other options.

I really think this i an efficiant enough unit to use, if you're one: a person that has never had 5.0 gigabitz per second, or two: are looking for an extra unit to increase the connectivity in your workspace. The box houses your B12 modem, your power supply cable, a sufficiently long ethernet cable, and your quick start guide( which basically tells you to download a Motorola app to get the tech support on the line, via text, to hepl with any of your set-up needs and for troubleshooting. Or you can basically call your internet provider and use their technical support folks to walk you through it. This thing works really well for a lot of my home technology, like my smart appliances, such as, my vaccum(Yes. Those run on wifi.), my cleaning robot, and my smart-locks, to name a few. But I don't really recomment it for you're only modem if you've got a heavy video gamer in the house along side all of the tech that I just mentioned. As you will need more power. IMO. calling my provider allowed me to be able to set it up and work with the unit I have. Needing that, because this only comes with one ethernet port and I need more for my security camera equipment and sometimes, a gaming PC or console. It fits the decor of any living space and it is pretty smooth. I just woukdn't try to run too much on it. If you don't need the power output that I'm packing, I could definitely see this being the only modem you'll need. This can result in saving you some decent cash on provider rental fees. So that toally makes this a plus point to own it. Also. Make sure your IP supports it like mine does.

After having to return a less then 1 month old brand new s33 modem due to overheating issues I saw this beauty. The modem looks great and meets my needs of 2 gig internet, small size and 2.5 gig uplink to my Eero 6e pro wireless setup. Easy setup and initial add to xfinity as a new modem. Took about 15-20 min total fo replace the previous modem and become fully functional. Recommend this modem for both its functionality as well as it matches the Apple HomePods and homepod minis!

If you have cable internet, you'll know that a modem is required to utilize the service. Of course, you could "rent" one from you provider, but having your own is not only cheaper in the long run, it often provides a much more reliable service. I have had several modems over the years as a longtime cable internet user. The Motorola B12 has been an excellent replacement for my previous modem. The installation went fairly smooth, though I did have a bit of trouble initially getting the modem registered with my cable provided. That was no fault of the modem, my provider's system wasn't accepting the new information properly. Once that part was fixed, the rest of the setup was a breeze. The modem was up and running and has been providing excellent speeds since. I have had zero issues so far while playing games online, streaming 4K on multiple devices throughout my house. Of course, the modem is only part of the picture when it comes to home networking, but it is likely the most important part. One issue from it, and every other part suffers. Along with great performance, the B12 is also a nice looking modem. It goes against typical trends of plastic towers and instead looks more like a modern home assistant speaker. The fabric covered "pod" look of the modem looks elegant and doesn't feel out of place in my setup. It also doesn't have large bright lights that are bothersome while you're trying to enjoy a movie or TV show in a darker room. One somewhat strange issue that I have had so far, is I have been unable to add the modem to the Motosync app. It asks me to scan the QR code on the bottom of the modem, and when I do, it just says it's an unrecognized device. If I try to add the modem manually, using the MAC address as it says to, I get the same response of an unrecognized device. Hopefully Motorola will sort this issue out soon. The app isn't necessary by any means, but I would like to utilize the additional options that it has. Pros: Easy setup, reliable, nice looking, subtle lights Cons: App is unable to set up at this time

Inconsistent signal and incompatible with routers

I am a long time Xfinity (formerly Comcast) customer and I've gone through phases where I buy my own modem and then other phases where I rent (lease) whatever is their newest. I've found (or used to) that they all work about the same and connecting wireless routers and signal consistency all leads to the same end point. I've been using the newest 1200mbps (1.2gbps) white tower unit for awhile but figured I could save a few bucks a month by trying out a purchased modem again so enter the Motorola B12. It is very small and compact and as utilitarian as they come for cable modems. It has a power port, one 2.5gbps port and that's about it. It is extremely light and once in use does heat up which I was surprised to find considering it has zero wifi components or transmitters which are usually the main culprit generating heat in wireless routers. The overall feel of the unit did not exude high end quality at all. It is compatible with at least three cable internet companies and each has their own setup. For Xfinity, they have you use their app to set it up. For the record, I have yet to have anything be automated and easy with Xfinity and that streak continues. Back in the day, you had to call in to set it up. Then they offered online setup via an ethernet connection but you still ended up having to call in to get it registered and going for a third party modem to register the CM MAC address. Now? You use the Xfinity app but after trying in vain several times to auto register, you will need to chat with an agent to, yep you guessed it, register your CM MAC address and get your unit online. Once properly connected you get a solid white light. Once online, and after a quick reboot, off you go....or not. Speeds were there as expected. I'm on the essentials package which provides ~500mbps down and ~24mbps up and I was getting more than enough (~550mbps). The cable modem is rated for much higher speeds, so you can always upgrade to a faster package and the B12 would have no problems accommodating it. The problem is the modem refused to work with not one, not two but FOUR different wireless routers. This included everything from my ancient WRT54 to my newer RAX50v2. Every single one of them would not sync and obtain an address. I tried everything even talking to Xfinity and they said everything looked good on their end. Having used numerous owned cable modems and their own models over the last 20+ years, this was the first time I could not get a wireless router to work. Every single one of them worked fine with the Xfinity Gateway. I could hook up switches and hubs to my heart's content, but another wireless router with the B12? That was a no go. Another problem was weird freezes/dropped signals when gaming. The Xfinity wireless router was smooth as silk but the B12 gave erratic performance that I found inconsistent and frustrating. My wife is also a gamer who plays World of Warcraft and she was very irritated over those little glitches let alone having to use her cellphone's data since wifi was a no go. In the end, the hassle wasn't worth it and I just re-enabled my Xfinity gateway and just like that everything was working like before. All of my wireless routers connected no problem and those little pauses/drops went away. I will gladly pay the ~$15USD a month to have a consistent signal and zero problems with my routers.

I got this modem to replace a 7 year old modem that has been disconnecting intermittently (CM1000). With a 1 Gbps speed with Spectrum as service provider I am able to reach up to 1.1 Gbps with this modem. The CM1000 is rated at a 1 Gbps and it went up to as high as 940 Mbps. This modem looks like a mini speaker and it's super light. It can easily fall over if the coax cable is not situated in specific angle. So far I have used it for one week and no issues with internet speeds using it along side eero 7 Max mesh system. It's a great modem for those who need up to 2.5 Gbps speeds.

This modem is amazing. I get nearly double the internet speed I am paying for. That's what this modem is all about. This next part I had to find in a blog and confirm it with motorola: "Active Queue Management (AQM), helps organize data packets to reduce latency and improve streaming, gaming, and conferencing performance." Yeah especially for the price, you get what you pay for. Its compatible with most internet providers as well.

Appears to work fine. Not easy to get connected to Xfinity. Had to go through chat to get it connected and even then they had to have someone call me back to get it to connect. My old modem connected automatically with no interaction from Comcast needed. This thing runs super hot compared to my old Motorola modem. Even the cable connector gets super hot. Ended up returning because of that.

Great modem I got this to replace an old one that I was having issues with. I prefer to buy one so I don’t have to pay a monthly fee from Xfinity

Excellent signal strength and unreal speed. I am now consistently hitting 500mbps plus with this modem. Looks sleek and not much like a modem. Setup was super easy

I replaced the modem Xfinity gave us with this, and it fixed the stuttering snd packet loss i was experiencing while gaming, and increased my mesh network’s speed. This is well worth it. It was also very easy to set up.
