This is another amazing Z-mount lens from Nikon. Sharp everywhere, quiet, quick to focus, and an impressive minimum focus distance ranging from 1/2m (at 70mm) to 1m (at 200mm). I have two warnings about this lens. First, it renders out-of-focus areas an a somewhat bizarre way — a little "swirly" — which I know some people like, but I personally think that's more appropriate for an inexpensive novelty or old MF lens than for something as serious as a 70-200/2.8. I now have to check my backgrounds more carefully than ever. Second, it's only marginally better than the latest "FL" version of the F-mount lens unless you shot a lot of video (I shoot none), in which case you'll appreciate how quietly this lens focuses. Since I only have one Z body and three DSLRs, events involving multiple lenses are now a little complicated unless and until I buy additional FTZ adapters, and events requiring multiple bodies *and* lenses are massively complicated. This is a no-brainer if you have only Z bodies and/or shoot a lot of video at these focal lengths, but the decision becomes more complex if you already own an "FL" F-mount copy. Hope that makes sense.

The new, mirrorless version of one of Nikon’s legendary lenses. So far so good. I have only taken it on one outing and used it around the house. The large aperture allows great control of exposures, as expected. The autofocus works super fast. The image produced has that rich, deep image look that the pro-quality Nikon lenses produce. I am not ready to give a perfect score. I had trouble getting a quick focus on a bird that flitted close. It is big and heavy, expected for an f2.8 zoom like this. I will update this review once I am higher on the learning curve, if I can figure out how to do that here.

I have the previous DSLR version of this lens, too, but when I upgraded to a Mirrorless body, I didn't want to use the FTZ adapter. I figured it would be a small bump in terms of sharpness quality, but this "S" version of the lens is such a fantastic improvement. Increased sharpness edge-to-edge, less vignetting, and a sleeker look (in my opinion). Well worth the upgrade after moving to Mirrorless. (I have used this lens for the last five months.)

Love this lens, it focuses fast, is tack sharp and includes 2 function buttons on the lens body. I was hoping that Nikon would manage to shed some grams and some centimeters when they redesigned the lens for mirrorless but the optical quality more that makes up for the similar size to my old F lens. The lens feels solid in hand and is easy to manipulate the controls. The function buttons are large and easy to reach / operate. I highly recommend this lens to Nikon Z user that wants a professional level zoom lenses.

OUTSTANDING optics. If you own a Z camera, this is one of the "trinity" of lenses most of us have been waiting for.
Little to know focus breathing, no telescoping, additional function buttons, the OLED display and so on.
Realistically, if you are in the market for a lens like this, you know all the features. This is according to more opinions than just mine, the best 70-200 F2.8 Nikon has ever made, and the last one was amazing.

Great lens! Works seamlessly and is very versatile whether used in full auto, program, aperture priority or in manual mode. The only disappointment is the cloth bag provided as storage when the lens is not in use. Seems that a high end lens like this would have a come with an appropriately sized and insulated leather case.

This is the best Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 lens I've owned. It is sharp. The focusing is very fast with minimal focus breathing. I particularly like that it is an internal zoom lens. This leaves less opportunity for dust and moisture to get inside. It feels very solid, not cheap at all. I'm very pleased with my new lens.

I had read laudatory reviews of the 70-200 mm f/2.8 lens for Nikon Z cameras and became convinced to buy one. I've found it to be one of the best lenses I've ever used on any Nikon--the DSLR "D" series as well as the new mirrorless "Z" series. It is extremely sharp across the image. It can focus on subjects so close that it can be used as a close-up lens. It has built in anti-vibration (VR), which I think works in tandem with the excellent VR in the Z bodies. When used with the Z50 body, which does not have VR in the body, the lens gives you the VR; and because the Z50 is a DX (cropped sensor) lens, you also get an apparent increase in the zoom range to 105-300 mm. In short, it is a great lens and will probably be a legend in Nikon-world. I must mention that it is neither small nor all that light, because the physics of the optics for a full-frame camera make it so. At present, it is the only Z lens which accepts the new 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters from Nikon; I've found the photos with the 2.0x TC be very sharp as well.

Quality control issue

This lens... Hmm there is the good the bad and the ugly. The ugly first: I have had 2 of them. The first lens the autofocus was absolutely terrible. I mostly shoot manual so I wasn't sure if I should make an issue of it. The manual shooting on this first lens was fantastic. Upon thinking of how much I paid I decided to take it back. If I'm spending thousands everything should work.
They let me exchange the lens for free. As I was told this is only on the first exchange.. if I chose to exchange it again it would be a restocking fee which is pretty high on this item as it's sale price is pretty high.
The second lens was... interesting. The colors seemed way more accurate on this lens, and the overall sharpness was much, much better. I would not have known this had I not gotten the lens exchanged. It did do better with auto focusing than the first lens, however both lenses were unable auto focus on smaller animals like birds, or birds in flight... which I found somewhat disappointing. Then we come down to the manual focusing. (Big sigh...)
The first lens was much easier to manual focus. This one always seems slightly off from what you are seeing. It does a great job when it does catch the focus just right, but it is waaaay more finnicky to manual focus. Even using the focus peaking option on the Z7II body changed between the 2 lenses, the first lens was easy to view the focus peaking and this lens is much less noticeable even set to the highest setting.
Overall I think it's a great lens but it would have been nice if I didn't feel each one excelled at different things... I mean it's the same exact lens! The quality control should be a bit more accurate. I kept the second lens as it's sharpness is fantastic... but be warned, go through everything be fore your 30 days is up.
I am going to try a firmware update soon... hoping somehow that this issue was addressed since upon checking yesterday this lens was not sold to me with the most up to date firmware. I've had the lens overall 4 months and have had some great shots... it's just a bit frustrating.
