Exactly what I needed! Installed by the Geek Squad(superb service and well worth the cost) the receiver streams my internet services, handles my blu ray player, laptop(but not ipad) and Xbox. Secondly all six speaker(four in the main room and two in the patio) were all calibrated . I then added a subwoofer by sony and wow what a difference. The speaker system can be programmed and used inside or outside separately. Although I am not technically savvy(71 y/o) I called the Geek squad a few times and they guided me through the use of the two remotes.

Using this with a 5.1.2 speaker setup. Setup literature was minimal. Used the onscreen display and mic to setup the system. Really happy with the sound. I wish the vocals were just a tad higher and the bass slightly lower because the pictures on the wall were rattling. Remote is lacking and not backlight but no biggie because with hdmi arc my backlit remote can control the volume. Haven't used the HDMI video passthrough on the receiver because I am streaming Netflix and YouTube from my tv smart apps. Streaming apps sound great. On speaker setup you have two speaker ohm options; 4 or 6 ohms. If you have 8 ohm speakers pick 6. Also has 2nd zone. Connecting my patio speakers to it. One of my speakers shows up as "THX". I did not connect this to internet. For some reason the receiver display looks blurry or the text doesn't look sharp. Front panel connections have no cover. Looks like passive cooling so make sure to allow for air (vent). Really makes my speakers shine. I hope it lasts a long time and capacitors are of high quality.

This is replacing old Sony receiver that did not have HDMI ports, mainly to use CEC to turn receiver on/off when TV is turned on/off as the receiver is in a cabinet, IR blasters are stupid, and Directv Genie remote doesn’t send On/Off to audio equipment. That function works great and save me from leaving the receiver on and heating up every electronic in the cabinet or have to walk over and physically turn it on/off. I still need to tweak the setup but TV, movies, and streaming sound great. My one grip is ARC. For same reason as above I’m using ARC to get audio from streaming apps without having to go to the cabinet and physically change the input. This works fine maybe 50% of time. the times it doesn’t sense the audio is coming from the TV or vice versa switched back to another source and it doesn’t auto change to that sound source it is a pain. Have to get up and change the source. Wife and kids do this constantly when streaming through TV apps and it seemed there was a sequence they were doing to cause this but they have proven me wrong as my instruction of the sequence on my LG tv doesn’t always work. I‘m not sure why 1/2 the time it works and 1/2 the time it doesn’t as it’s exactly the same with same app. Price was great for the features. Using 2nd HDMI out to splitter that feeds many other TVs on the house. 2nd audio zone hooked up to whole home audio system. I can’t do that on my Denon and this was 1/2 the price. Menus are basic and not too intuitive.

Great sound reproduction! Improves the sound of my Klipsch 15m speakers over my previous amp. Also adds functionality which allows boosting the lows to make these great bookshelf speakers sound even better. Additional features I was seeking such as Bluetooth and built in WiFi are easy to set up and expand my system nicely. Even displays song title being played from Spotify! I have owned the Onkyo 646 for three years and I’m totally pleased with it. I’m using it to power a pair of Klipsch S2s which sound phenomenal together. This 686 is just a newer model with a few upgrades such as increased power. This receiver is a great buy.

I upgraded my pioneer receiver with true Hd and bluetooth for this receiver and I can tell you is that Im very happy with the sound quality compared with my piomeer. Some hightlights that i really love is that works with Dolby atmos, I have the Samsung UBd9500 and it works with dolby atmos, it also re installed reads my usb 1TB hard drive and has its own player that shows in the TV. It has a lot of sound options that includes THX cinema dolby x amd others but you need to have a BlueRay dvd player to read dolby atmos if the disk has atmos decoder.in terms of quality it looks very good and not cheap but my pioneer looks a little more better since its a gloss look and onkyo looks a little mate but with bottons gloss color. Has a calibration mic to calibrate and measure distance of your speakers in the room, works grrat. You can adjust every speaker impedance and db and can controll the level of each exept surround speakers but it sounds amazing. I have this receiver paired with all klipsch reference and its very powerfull and doesnt get hot and t high volumes and no distortion.

Great budget receiver if i had to give it a negative it could use more power but i think thats about every receiver in this price range. The built in 32 bit DAC using a digital connection gives amazing crystal clear sound so good im thinking of buying a higher end version in the 1000 dollar price range. Has all the features most could ever want. I just wish it had preouts for aftermarket amplifiers but this does not come on budget receivers. Requires being hooked up to a monitor or tv to access the settings menu because it is so detailed. Overall an amazing feature packed receiver for anyone who wants high quality sound.

I bought this to replace an old Pioneer receiver I have had for about 10 years. I wanted to have HDMI in and outputs to switch between all my components which my old one didn't have, plus I wanted the newer sound modes such as Atoms and DTSx. This receiver was easy to install and setup much like my old Pioneer but this one also has a really good on screen setup which my old one didn't. I added another pair of speakers for the front high channel and after calibration with the microphone this unit sounds awesome. The price on this unit was also very good, I highly recommend it.

I replaced my Sony Receiver with this Onkyo so that I could hook up more devices - it is working super great and I love how many devices I can run through it - it sounds great and puts out plenty of wattage for my home (I have it in a big open living room / kitchen with 20+ foot ceilings) - I have it hooked up to a mix of Sony and Polk speakers / subwoofer - I also love the built in Pandora app (and it has other ones as well) that makes it super easy to stream as well as the bluetooth streaming option - I am a huge fan of this receiver

Audio: 7.2 channels, plenty of power, great sound. Best of all support for native DSD, which is hugely valuable for me. It also has THX, Dolby Atmos, and DTS X. You can cast Spotify directly to it. Video: 4K, HDR10, and Dolby Vision passthrough, so essentially the perfect receiver for my Xbox One X. No lag and great picture! Interface: Extremely simple and easy to use. I probably would appreciate more detail, but I'm nitpicking here. Overall: If it has all the features you're looking for, you won't be disappointed.

Replaced an older Sony unit that did a good job with my older 1080 3d TV. I replaced that TV with an OLED and I needed the new unit to decode DTS:X, Dolby Atmos and be able to do HDR as well. The Onkyo - TX 7.2-Ch. Hi-Res 4K HDR Compatible A/V Home Theater Receiver is plenty capable to handle that and much more. I'm not a long winded reviewer. So whether its music or fully immersive theater sound, this things got you covered. It has many features that way more expensive units have at a more midrange price. I don't feel like I've sacrificed anything by paying less.

I have an older (20+ years) ONKYO receiver that was one of the first THX series and always ran great. I finally decided to try and hook it up to a newer TV, but with no HDMI capabilities I went ahead and upgraded to this model. Wow, so many new features have come out since then and this thing was a snap to setup with my MK surround sound system. Has all the inputs most anyone would need and still produces more than enough sound for what my speakers can handle.

I bought this to replace a 17 year old Onkyo receiver that still works perfectly. It was out of date with no HDMI or streaming ability. This thing is a beast! 6 HDMI in and 2 out. Bluetooth. WiFi. Dual zone. Room equalization. THX certified sound. Dolby Atmos. (I’ve ordered add-on Atmos speakers) The sound is great and the setup was simple. You won’t find all the features of this unit for TWICE the money from another manufacturer. Onkyo is the bang for the buck champ!

An older stereo receiver I had jerry rigged to cover my various AV components went bad and I took the opportunity to upgrade to the 21st century. This Onkyo unit covers about all the bases most users would need. Inputs for all major components and outputs for a fairly elaborate sound system, all well marked. Set up went smoothly, though you need to download the complete manual from the web (typical these days). The onscreen instructions walk you through the basic setup. The included microphone is used for calibrating the speaker output to the room which went well and resulted in excellent sound from even my basic two speaker setup. No doubt a more sophisticated system would be pretty impressive. It handles about every current sound software, the various flavors of DTS, Dolby, etc. I have had the unit for a couple of months and have been very happy with it. Only a couple of quirks to mention. My TV must be turned on before the Onkyo or the picture doesn't come up. It would have been nice if the Onkyo remote could also control my LG TV on/off in tandem with the receiver. Volume has to be done through Onkyo unit, the TV remote volume has no effect. The unit is large so pay attention to the size specs. I had to modify my AV cabinet to get a large enough shelf space. All in all very happy.

I am no professional by any means but I do my research and know my electronics. I have 2 surround systems in my house a 7.1 in the Living Room and a 5.1 in the bedroom. I am thinking of upgrading to Atmos with an additional 4 ceiling speakers so I have been doing a lot of research on what receiver I would purchase next. I currently have an older NAD 7.1 receiver in the bedroom and a Yamaha 2020 in the living room. I was never very happy with the Yamaha's sound. Just never seemed punchy enough for me. The NAD has great sound but it was outdated and no auto calibration setup of the speakers (which some may say is a good thing because it forces you to do the adjustments by yourself to your preferences) Neither was HDCP 2.2 compliant so that was another issue. I was down to 3 brands Denon, Marantz and Onkyo/integer when my Yamaha just stopped working after about 2 years. You have to remember that I was looking to replace 3K receivers so I was looking at models way above this one but needed something quick so I decided to test one of the lower models out to see what I thought before splurging for the top end. I picked this up as an open box at my local store, Hooked it up in no time changing out my Yamaha and then did the auto sound calibration. It took over from there and I have not had one single issue with it. It is better sounding and louder then my Yamaha which was 4 times the price. I have had it only a month so cannot attest for its reliability as of yet but I am happy with it. This one is going to replace the NAD in the bedroom and I think one of the top of the line models will be purchased soon

I finally updated from my old Onkyo. This receiver has many new features including airplay and wireless built in. Everything works great has great sound and plenty of power. The only issue that I have come across is that in pandora it says it is loosing connection, but it is still streaming. All in all awesome price on a very feature rich receiver and really is a great sound.

TLDR: Good quality, average ease of use and an excellent value in this price range. My 1080p Plasma TV finally died, I was sad to see it and the deep blacks go, but was excited to embrace 4k now that there is finally some consistent 4k content. I was disappointed to find that my receiver (Onkyo TX-NR626) which was "4k ready" when I bought it, was not at the current 4k standard, BOOOOOO. I am by no means an Onkyo "fanboy" I just ended up with my previous one because of a closeout timing situation several years ago. In my head I was looking to go Yamaha or Denon this time. I went on an extensive hunt to find the features I wanted for the best possible price, with a budget of $600 or less out-the-door. I read "top 10" and recommended lists by various publications and I read reviews (professional and consumer) from multiple sites, Over and over, in my budget range, I kept coming back to this one. I found that a lot of lists had this model as their "best bang for the buck" and I agree. Yamaha and Denon required another $200 to $300 commitment to get some of the features offered in this unit. It's hard to come by an amp of this power and grade in this price range. Dolby Atmos was a key feature not found in others in this range. It has a zone 2 which was important to me since I have an outdoor speaker system. In addition, Yamaha and Denon offerings in this price range had similar or worse issues in the consumer reviews I read...so I was basically looking at getting comparable quality with less features just to have a different badge on the front, no thanks. I also considered the TX-NR787, but didn't find the extra features to be worth the extra investment. I've had this for a month and initial impressions are good; it runs my system well. The initial setup was a little painful to get perfect, so prepare for that. But once it was setup, it sounds great. The volume range is wider than my old one, I now run volume at around 40-50, whereas on my old one it ran 25 to 35...I am pushing a 5.2.2 system now instead of a 7.2, not sure if that even matters. The remote is a little chintzy, feels and looks cheaper than my old one (which actually works with the new receiver). I imagine they were trying to dumb it down some for the uninitiated, but for those used to controls it feels like a downgrade. I like the dedicated headphone jack, I use a bluetooth transmitter with a 1/4 plug adapter to connect to my bluetooth headphones. This may seem like a strange work-around, but it allows me to quickly transition when everyone goes to bed and an easy transition for my kids to simply unplug for sound if I'm not around. Denon bought out Onkyo and Pioneer a couple of years ago, which by the way you will notice a lot of Pioneer models look identical to the Onkyos on the back panel. This has hopefully led to some reliability improvements since Onkyo went through some amp issues a few generations back. Although I never had a problem with my old 626, I went ahead and bought the service contract from Best Buy due to these concerns. So far so good, I would buy this again.

What A Great Receiver & Home Theater Unit

I LOVE this receiver / Home Theater unit ! The have it set up for 7.1 sounds via my Bose speakers. It will automatically match itself to the incoming signal such as 7.1, 5.1, stereo, etc. There is more than enough power to drive the speaker setuAtomi 4 Port USB CHarge Station Works Very Well. You can adjust various Theater sounds from the remote control or use Onkyo's IPhone or Android apps. The unit has so many features there isn't enough room the review them but they all work well. The instructions are easy to follow. This is not Onkyo's top of the line receiver but it is not a middle of the road receiver, either. It just has so many features it's almost mind boggling. The cost is appropriate and the unit is easy to use. No more muddy sounding dialog for me.

I am not an audiophile and I normally don't write a review unless I have played with the product long enough. However, it looks like this model is going to be replaced by a 2019 model, a review published later would be of no use to anybody. So here I am. I haven't tested it thoroughly yet but find it easy to use (much easier than my 5 year old Yamaha) and everything seems to work. The sound quality is pretty decent (to my ears and with my setup), much better than the sound bars I tried before (I have tried a few). If you want a decent receiver that has all the important features, this is the one to buy (at this price range). Best Buy seems to be the only national chain still selling this model and they sell it at a good discount now.
