Extreme Freedom to go where I want!!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am a digital packrat. I love creating content for my work, friends and home movies for the family. I have large 12-14 TB standalone HDD and they work great for long term storage and redundant back ups but I cannot work directly off them as they are too cumbersome and slow. I also hate being tied down to a single workstation at home. Larger projects take days, weeks and months to complete and I need to be free to work where I want to and the Sandisk Extreme let me do just that! Why I choose Sandisk Extreme - For one, Speed….raw beautiful, powerful speed (2000 mb/s read). I love that I can dump all my project videos and pics into it and work from any PC I want just by plugging in the Sandisk Extreme…. The office, home or on the back deck…I can take it with me. I love it. Also keeps my PC lean and free to focus on the application cranking away the data. You get a dirty bogged down pc and crashes, lock up and errors are headed your way. On the portability feature one might be concerned with what if I drop it or spill a soda on it… No worries here. It is rated IP65 which means it is dust proof and soda splash proof….Now if you completely submerge it… you might be in trouble depending how long and how deep it goes(maybe)…But a soda spill or a splash of some sort…not a problem. Safe. The drop test on it is up to 9 feet and change! I’m 6 feet tall, so the most I would drop is probably 4 feet. I also love that it has a Carabiner hook on the corner so I can clip it onto my go-bag or key chain! So well designed For on the go…. It also lays flat on its bottom side and has a material that grabs the surface below it so it does move around a lot. I wish the cable was a little longer though (small gripe to be sure and personal preference.) Overall if you do multimedia, or want a safe way to have your digital files on the go with you and you want speed… Sandisk Extreme is the best game in town. Well built and tough on spills, drops and dust proof… Can’t go wrong.

Solid Drive, clumsy app
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First Impressions Out of the Box Pull the SanDisk Extreme 1TB out of its packaging and the first thing you notice is how small it is. Its footprint of just 50 x 96.2mm makes it smaller than most modern smartphones, and at under 9mm thick it slides easily into a shirt pocket. The build is rubber-clad with a textured top and bottom surface that gives you a confident grip — though I'll admit, the look could be confused with a cheap Bluetooth speaker if you didn't know better. In the box you get the drive and a short USB-C cable for connectivity. One small frustration right out of the gate: the included cable is frustratingly short — around 20-30cm — which is fine for a laptop but awkward for anyone running it off a desktop tower. Budget a few dollars for a longer cable and don't let this be a dealbreaker. Build Quality and Durability This is where the SanDisk Extreme earns its name. The current model carries an IP65 rating for resistance to water and dust, a step up from the IP55 of earlier generations. That means you can take this thing into genuinely hostile environments — rain, construction sites, dusty field locations — and not lose sleep over it. The orange plastic loop at the top corner is a nice touch for field users — clip it to a carabiner on a bag, a belt loop, or a camera rig and you're not going to accidentally leave it on a park bench. One honest caveat: the rubber coating does attract dust and lint aggressively and I can imagine that after 18-24 months of heavy use it could start to look worn or feel slightly sticky. Functionally it doesn't matter, but aesthetically it's worth knowing. Performance: Where It Gets Serious Let's cut straight to what most people care about. The SanDisk Extreme is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 solution with rated performance of 2000 MB/s read. In real-world testing, that seems to be only under perfect conditions with the right data – expect FAST, but less with your data. One thermal note: in my testing, the drive does get warm during long continuous transfers, but never hot enough to throttle performance in shorter bursts. If you're doing marathon video ingest sessions, give it a moment to breathe between runs. Connecting to Your Computer Plug it in via USB-C and it mounts immediately — no drivers, no drama. The drive works immediately on Mac, PC, and iPad Pro without any setup or reformatting. It comes pre-formatted in ExFAT, which is cross-platform compatible out of the box. Mac users who prefer a different format can easily reformat using Apple's Disk Utility. SanDisk also bundles a Security app on the drive itself, providing 256-bit AES encryption and password protection for sensitive files. It's a useful addition for anyone storing client data or confidential work materials, and it doesn't require any third-party software install on the host machine. Connecting to Your Phone: The SanDisk Memory Zone App Here's where things get more nuanced — and where you need to go in with clear expectations. The SanDisk Memory Zone app (now rebranded simply as the SANDISK app following a 2025 transition) is available for both Android and iOS. The concept is solid: plug the Extreme into your phone via USB-C, launch the app, and manage your files directly between phone and drive without needing a computer in the loop. For Android with USB OTG support, this works well. The app lets you view all storage sources — internal storage, external drives, and formerly cloud storage — organized by file type, with options to back up, restore, copy, move, and share files. On iOS, I never got my iphone to to recognize the drive using the Memory Zone app. The Apple built-in Files app did see the drive though – and it could be used through there. Files handles file browsing, copying, and moving cleanly. Android users similarly can use their built-in file manager. The Memory Zone app adds convenience features like automated backup scheduling, but it's no longer the essential bridge it once was and one of the reasons for only giving 4 Stars. Final Verdict The hardware itself is close to flawless for the price. The Extreme Portable delivers strong performance, high capacity, an impressively rugged design, and a competitive price that appeals to both professional and casual users. The drive earns every star it gets on build quality and raw speed. The Memory Zone app is the weak link, and SanDisk needs to get serious about fixing it. The forced migration to the new app stripped functionality that users depended on, and the reliability complaints are too consistent to dismiss. Until that story improves, treat the app as a bonus rather than a core feature — and know that your phone's native file manager will handle most of what you actually need. If you want a fast, tough, genuinely portable SSD that you can abuse on a job site, toss in a camera bag, or use as a daily backup drive, the SanDisk Extreme 1TB delivers where it matters most: consistent transfer speeds, proper durability, and zero friction on a computer. Just don't buy it expecting the companion app to be the star of the show.

Top Notch Portable SSD
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V3 is a well designed, rugged, portable USB SSD with up to 2 GB/s read performance. The retail box contains quick start instructions, warranty information, a 6" USB-C to USB-C cable and the SSD itself. The SSD measures 2" x 3 5/16" and is 3/8" thick. It fits very comfortably into a pocket, and has a loop so it can be attached to a lanyard or a large key fob. It feels very solid and well manufactured, offers IP65 water and dust resistance, and should withstand a drop of up to 3 meters. The drive functions essentially the same as a USB flash drive, no special drivers or other software are required. When connected to a USB-C port on a desktop or laptop, the SSD is immediately recognized and available for use. It appears as an external USB storage device named Extreme, its file system format is exFAT and the Eject function is available for the drive. The SSD comes with SanDisk Security software for Windows 10/11 and macOS 13/14/15. This software enables SSD password protection using its available 256-bit AES hardware encryption, allowing the user to create and change a password, unlock the drive, and remove the password. SanDisk states up to a 2000 MB/s sequential read speed. Write speed is described as being lower with no number provided. With the SSD connected to a Thunderbolt 4 port on an HP Ultra Flip laptop, CrystalDiskMark measures 1975 MB/s and 1246 MB/s sequential read and write speeds. When connected to a USB Type-C port with USB 3.2 Gen 2 support on a Windows 11 desktop PC, CrystalDiskMark measures 969 MB/s and 861 MB/s sequential read and write speeds. This reflects the difference in SSD performance over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 vs. USB 3.2 Gen 2. The durability, size and performance of the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD make it an ideal device for handling a very large collection of audio files as I work with a friend and manually transfer data to/from a remote machine. I would strongly recommend this product to anyone looking for a durable, portable, high volume and high performance external storage device.

Portable, Rugged, and FAST
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The SanDisk - Extreme 1TB portable external hard drive is definitely rugged -- a really good thing given the condition the package arrive in :-O (see picture). I originally started using this SSD external hard drive as my Time Machine backup for a Mac Studio Ultra M3 Ultra. But, given its portability, I changed the use of this hard drive to portioned half as storage and half as my Time Machine backup for my MacBook Pro M5 14". This decision was based on two factors: this hard drive is incredibly small and easily portable and the hard drive space on my MacBook is only 512GB as opposed to 2TB on the Mac Studio. So, it makes sense to have the portability of such a slim design for additional storage on the go as well as a Time Machine backup that actually fits the entirety of my computer's own hard drive. According to an app I use called Menu Meters, I have been averaging approximately 1,800 MB/s using a heavy duty USB-C cord for data transfer. Menu Meters does not measure the speeds for Time Machine, but I was able to do a full, fresh backup of approximately 380GB in just under 2 hours, though part of that was on battery power so I expect it would be even faster if done plugged in the whole time. Overall, this is a great pocket/briefcase/purse friendly rugged hard drive with modest space and excellent speed. If I had the option to buy the same drive with more storage to meet the 2TB needed for backup on my desktop, I definitely would. Highly recommend.

Still Great for the Road Warrior
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The drive is about the same thickness and width as the older Extreme Portable SSDs, but it's noticeably shorter - shaving off about 17mm. This makes for an even more pocketable drive to toss in a bag and include in your tech travel kit. And it's just as sturdy as ever, with only a USB-C port exposed to the outside world. It's spec'd with an IP65 water resistance...and although I wasn't ready to fully test it, the entire drive appears well sealed. The interface of the drive is USB 3.2 Gen2, and that shows in my benchmarks; actually getting pretty close to the 2000MB/s read speed of the specifications. Writing, not so much. I tested the drive on an Apple laptop with Thunderbolt 5 and the speeds were slower than a newer Windows laptop I have, but YMMV. Simply put, to reach the stated speed of the drive, you'll need fast ports (obviously), but it's still not a guarantee. The drive comes formatted in ExFAT, works fine on iOS devices, and even contains a PDF file that provides a link to the Sandisk App (previously called the Sandisk Memory Zone). The app, itself, is pretty good at managing local file backups quickly and the interface is easy to understand and navigate.

Fast, compact and stylish
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sandisk Extreme portable SSD is an extremely portable and convenient SSD with 1TB of storage. The dark gray design is modern with a shiny orange Sandisk logo and other orange details, including the little handle. It features a USB-C port that can benefit from the newest USB 3.2 transfer speeds, but also works with other USB-C and Thunderbolt ports. The cable is about 4 inches between each connector. The drive itself is roughly 3 inches long, so it definitely qualifies as pocket-sized. The SSD is dust and water resistant with an IP65 rating, and it can withstand a drop from 3 meters, although I’m too responsible to test that! I’ve used it both on a PC and Mac, so I can confirm fast and smooth transfers on both. Formatting was quick and easy. As a video editor and content creator, I regularly deal with large video files, and I’m using this drive for a VOD channel so I thought it would be interesting to transfer files with my USB 3.2 port on my computer. 20 GB of videos transferred in about 30 secs, and 50 GB transferred in a little over a minute. On my Mac Studio with a Thunderbolt port, it transferred 250 GB in about 30 mins. It requires Windows 10 or newer, or macOS 13 or newer, so I can’t verify compatibility on other or older systems. There’s an optional Sandisk Desktop App available on both Windows and macOS, where you can transfer and back up files, or dive into more advanced features like restoring and encrypting files and password protection. The drive is also compatible with Android 10 or newer, and iOS 17 or newer, if you’re looking to extend the storage on your smartphone/iPhone. iPads with USB-C ports are compatible too. The SSD is also backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Overall, the Sandisk Extreme SSD offers rapid transfer speeds with a compact, lightweight design, allowing you to quickly transfer large files or large amounts of files when you’re on the go. Perfect for photographers, videographers and content creators.

Speedy Little Guy
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Historically, adding storage to a computer was limited to two options: taking the machine apart to install additional storage internally for performance at the expense of convenience, or connecting a USB storage device for convenience at the expense of performance. Fortunately, modern USB standards have become fast enough that they can communicate at speeds rivaling the latest internal storage interfaces, and external SSDs truly provide the best of both worlds. The Sandisk Extreme Portable 1TB SSD is quite literally an internal, high performance SSD in a shroud that has a USB-C port, giving the best of both worlds. - Unboxing and Setup As with any external storage, setup is as simple as it gets - simply plug it into an available USB-C port on your machine and you’re off to the races. The Extreme Portable’s small size and short (about 7 inches long) USB cable easily tucks away behind a laptop, but I would’ve liked a slightly longer cable as I also use this on a desktop machine with an elevated USB-C port, where the short cable means I can’t quite lay it flat where it’s out of the way. In any case, the disk comes pre-formatted as exFAT with a formatted storage capacity of 922 GB - indicating the advertised 1TB storage is in fact 1024GB rather than the “1TB = 1000GB” metric that some disk manufacturers use to inflate storage claims. This also indicates that there’s little in the way of over-provisioning to prevent write performance slowdowns when the drive fills up, but as this is based off a proper NVMe disk internally there should be a decent memory controller on board to handle. A preloaded PDF on the drive advertises the disk and its features. I reformatted the disk and was off and running. - Performance SanDisk advertises up to 2,000 MB/s read performance when connected to a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2x2 port capable of 20Gbps transfer speeds. Real world performance will vary greatly depending on the capabilities of your machine, disk capacity and utilization, and the types of read operations being performed. My laptop has a USB-C port capable of these high speeds but performance benchmarks capped out around 1,000 MB/s, which I don’t believe is a fault of the drive but perhaps how my system is configured. Regardless, my “limited” speeds are still nearly double that of the best SATA-based SSDs, and in using the disk I hardly noticed a difference. Batch file transfers and smaller, more rapid operations are handled just as smoothly as any internal disk, with the Extreme taking it all in stride. There were no hiccups or delays that I noticed, even when using the disk to boot an external operating system run entirely off the drive. The only issue I noticed in testing was that large file transfers to the SanDisk Extreme seem to go smoothly through the first 8GB or so, before there’s a distinct pause for about 5-10 seconds and the file transfers resume at slower speeds. This leads me to believe there’s a DRAM cache on the disk that’s buffering writes, which explains the high performance for smaller operations while large writes take longer. The system can send data to the disk faster than its memory controller can write it to the NAND, so the DRAM cache helps queue up pending writes until the memory controller is ready for further operations. Dealing with multiple large files shouldn’t be an issue either way; you will need to queue up about 10GB worth of writes before you notice performance drops. In any case it’s still massively faster than an SD card or similar flash storage. I did notice during benchmarking that the Extreme gets somewhat warm. Nothing terribly concerning but I question how much heat dissipation the device is capable of, as the rubber coating is likely trapping heat. SSDs tend to have shorter lives if they are run in hot environments for extended periods, so ensure that you’re not stuffing the disk into an enclosed space like a laptop sleeve or backpack while it’s in use. - Bottom Line There’s not much else to say about the SanDisk Extreme portable SSD - as a speedy external disk it does the job well and grants both extended storage for your machine and a highly portable way to move files between devices without the drawbacks of flash-based memory sticks and media cards. I do recommend the SanDisk Extreme 1TB with a major caveat - at the time of this review (17 April 2026), storage and memory prices are at all-time highs due to both economic demand from artificial intelligence firms and sociopolitical factors. Its current MSRP of $259.99 is more than double what a comparable 1TB external disk was selling for less than a year ago and would usually represent terrible value, but in current market conditions this is about average or only a slight premium. If you absolutely need this kind of storage solution at this time, it’s par for course. Conditionally recommended.

Light and durable SSD
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.SanDisk - Extreme 1TB Portable SSD is the largest external storage I've ever owned. I have only used thumb drives with less than 3.5GB at most (and have a couple of them), so this device is a game-changer for me. The first thing I did was copying all of my files from my iCould photos. There were 1,130 photos (2.6GB) and videos and the pop-up message initially stated that it was going to take 35 minutes to complete the task but it took less than 20 minutes. The design is very slick and I like the color combo of black and red (there are other colors available). It's very light at only 4 ounce and compact (3.5" W x 2" H x 3/4" D). It comes with a hook for a key chain, so you can keep it secure inside a bag or on your person. It comes with a USB-A cable, so it works with with my iPhone and my laptop, which is very convenient. The bottom cover has a mat-finish that is a non-slip texture, so it feels secure holding it your hand but even if you accidentally drop it, it seems durable. Two reasons I didn't give five stars. One is the price - there are plenty of portable external drives with the same memory size sold at less than half of SanDisk's. Another reason is the actual memory size. It was actually 930 GB and not 1TB (1,000 GB). It was installed with a PDF guide but it was definitely not 70 GB (actually 4,637 KB), so that was misleading in my opinion. Otherwise, this is a very solid external drive and I would recommend it.

Extremely Great With USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Devices
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.SPEEDY FOR SOME, NOT EVERYONE The speed jump to 20 Gbps on this latest Sandisk Extreme portable SSD v3 (Extreme v3) version is a fantastic upgrade from the standard model. However, it comes with an important asterisk as this speed is only possible if your device has USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. If your computer only has USB 3.2 Gen 2, it will downshift to a max 10 Gbps. So, for example, while my Macs can read and write to the Extreme v3 just fine, those respective speeds are limited to around 880 MB/s. That’s because no Mac is equipped with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 compatibility. USB variations are confusing, so basically, “USB 3.2 Gen 2x2,” adds an additional data lane to the “USB 3.2 Gen 2” standard. That’s why it’s called “2x2”. Double lanes, double speed. Even Windows computers are not immune since “2x2” support is optional in USB 3.2 and USB 4. So, if you don’t have a “2x2” capable computer consider Sandisk’s base USB 3.2 Gen 2 portable SSD. You’ll get the same 800-ish Gbps speed either way, but the entry model will save you a few coins. BUILD QUALITY & DESIGN If you have a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 computer then this v3 version is a terrific a portable drive for media and other large files, being both fast and hearty. I’ve been using Sandisk portable drives for many years and I keep coming back mostly because the case travels so easy. SSD technology will improve over time, but the design and feel of Sandisk’s portable SSDs is unique and nearly perfected. Comparing my older model, the footprint of the Extreme v3 has shrunk maybe 25%, but it retains the same soft, rubbery, silicon bottom and sides and grippy texturized plastic top. It fits right in the palm of my hand and “sticks” even when damp. This reduces my stress I’ll drop it. But if I do, and I have with older models, the case can protect the contents. Based only on my clumsiness, the case’s durability is real. At only about .31 inches, and almost weightless, I can drop it into my pants’ pocket or any other small space without fear it will get crushed. I’m hesitant to call the case’s corner carabiner clip hole iconic since I think it was introduced maybe a decade ago, but it has become a Sandisk portable SSD signature. I thought it was a gimmick the first time I saw it, but I’ve found it handy on occasion when I needed quick access, and I had no viable pocket. Just clip to pants’ belt loop, sling, backpack, or whatever works. To top it off, it’s IP65 rated, meaning it’s proven to be dust proof and can take a light rain too. That said, the USB-C port is uncovered. I’m also impressed how the USB-C port locks on to the supplied USB cable. As a test, I let it dangle on the cable while connected to my laptop to see if it would disconnect. It remained connected like it was cemented. I’m embarrassed to admit I accidentally pushed a portable SSDs off the side of a desk once and it ended in tears and cursing because the report I was working on got corrupted. So, this demonstration boosts my confidence I’ll be less likely to experience a similar untimely cable disconnect catastrophe. BACKUP & ENCRYPTION APP While the sturdy case physically protects the data inside, the included (via download) software digitally secures it. It’s available for Windows, Android, Mac, and iOS. The app’s main features provide AES 128-bit encryption and automatic and manual backup. It also acts as a file manager. Installing the software isn’t required to use the Extreme v3 itself, but rather to enable these extra features. I gave the software a look, but I use other backup and encryption software and have no need for the computer versions. The iPhone can natively save files to SSDs, so I don’t need the mobile app either. Still, I tested the encryption feature out of curiosity and have a couple points to relay. First, the encryption page is hidden in plain sight. It’s found by navigating to the “…” menu icon. Then press “device settings.” Here you’ll find the options to update firmware, change the name of your Extreme v3, and to “set up lock”; i.e., encryption. When I set up encryption neither my Mac nor PC’s password manager activated as they normally do when setting a new password. It was a 100% manual affair. There is even a warning that the password isn’t recoverable if you forget it. A space to leave a hint is provided though. Certainly saving the password to your password manager or elsewhere after the fact is an option, but kind of a hassle. At the end of the process, I was asked if I wanted to use my computers fingerprint reader to unlock the Extreme V3 and I pressed “yes.” For whatever reason though it doesn’t activate, and I still must type in my password each time I insert the SSD. So, it’s possible my computers’ security settings are so high its blocking my password managers in this instance thinking the Sandisk software is a trojan, but this is my experience. Ultimately, I’m not a fan of the software but it works and the Extreme v3 doesn’t require it for basic functionality. As such, while it’s not great, it doesn’t impact my rating of the drive itself. PERFORMANCE Neither travelability nor security matter if the SSD itself isn’t robust and true to its specs. My initial impression is the Extreme v3 is excellent on both accounts. But, for transparency, I’ve only been using it for a few days. Sandisk’s portable SSDs have served me well over the years and I see nothing in this model to give me concern in this regard. Like my older models, I use the Extreme v3 to hold my 45MP RAW photos, weighing in between 30-70 MB each. I edit mostly in Lightroom and, occasionally, Photoshop on my Mac. Since Macs lack “2x2” capability I use the Extreme v3 with my Windows laptop so I can full harness the drive’s 20 Gbps speed. Usually, I drop my photos directly from camera memory card to SSD via computer, but I wanted to test the Extreme v3’s transfer time. I dumped 800 images totaling 25 GB into my computer and then to the Extreme v3. It took a few blinks of my eyes, about 16 seconds. That’s fast. Before starting my editing, I did one more test. I ran the AS SSD benchmark software to confirm I was getting expected speeds. After running it a few times, the average read and write was a bit over 1600 MB/s. For me that’s close enough to the Extreme’s advertised, and theoretical, max speed. Back to real life usage. When editing, I use the big, full resolution file, not a proxy. This taxes a drive tremendously while scrolling them and performing routine edits where it’s constantly reading and writing. Of course, there are other components involved, but in my experience the drive is always the bottleneck. Scrolling though 800-ish images in Lightroom is smooth and fast. I experience no jerkiness or hesitation. Similarly, basic color or lighting edits are instant, no lag. Of course, more complicated changes like AI object removal or noise reduction take time because of computations unrelated to the Extreme v3. My sessions can last hours as I pixel peep to identify keepers and then tweak them. The Extreme v3 is barely warm under these conditions. So, I wanted to push it a bit more to get a better idea of its true stamina. I dropped in a 2.5-hour HD movie to see how it would fare playing video for that length of time. I regularly touched the drive to check for heat as the movie played, assuming it would be an inferno toward the end of the movie. But the entire time it was a constant mild warmth, nothing that would sound the alarm at a single fire station. But also, I noticed no dropped frames or other quirkiness that a tired drive will signal. All of this leads to me to believe this drive can easily handle a full workday of almost any computer task I need to accomplish. BOTTOM LINE Suffice to say, I’ll enjoy packing this up with my laptop on trips so I can get a jumpstart on editing before getting home. It does everything I need out of a portable SSD to quickly edit photo projects. But only because I have a compatible USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Windows laptop. That brings me to who I think the Extreme v3 is best suited for. The allure of speed is great. The reality is a race car performs best on a track, not the local streets. Same here. The speed is well used if you are working with large files in the multiple MB and GBs. But for office documents and other small files the Extreme v3 speed will go wasted. Your experience will be just as good, I think, with Sandisk’s standard model.

Exceptional Performanc in a Nice Package
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This SanDisk Extreme SSD has some excellent qualities and is hard to find a faster portable drive. The one sort of caveat of this, is the required hardware to achieve the maximum potential of the drive. I am fortunate enough to have access to a couple of desktop computers that include USB 3.2 2x2 ports. However, these are fairly rare. Since most newer machines have moved to USB 4, which doesn't actually have those same speed capabilities as USB 3.2 2x2. That being said, the drive still performs very well on any modern USB port. I tested the drive on those desktops, some Mac Pro laptops, a Razer Blade 14, and ASUS ROG Strix 18. While the laptops couldn't quite reach the same performance as the desktops with those USB 3.2 2x2 ports, it was still exceptionally fast. It's a shame that there aren't more devices to fully tap the maximum performance of this drive, but that isn't the fault of SanDisk. I think the only other option would be to use a full thunderbolt port, and that would dramatically increase cost, heat, and power consumption. I'm glad that they offer this drive. I was able to transfer and edit 4K video files from my drones and DSLR cameras directly off this drive without any performance issues. I could even edit video from this drive on the machines that didn't support the full 3.2 2x2 connection. As a side note, if you have used any of these type of SanDisk drives in the past, they have made improvements to their physical appearance too. The drive itself is smaller than the previous version. It has a very nice, soft-touch finish, and I like the new SanDisk logo too. Overall, even if you don't have access to a 3.2 2x2 port, this is still an excellent drive. And if you do get the chance to use it on those ports, you'll surely see the impressive transfer speeds that it's fully capable of. Pros: Exceptional speeds, nice finish, compact size Cons: USB 3.2 2x2 ports are very hard to come by, the included cable is pretty short

Snappy SSD!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. With the costs going up on RAM and Storage, the quality of the product matters even more. Been using the SanDisk Extreme SSD for almost a week and I am loving these read/write speeds. Mostly using to transfer between my S24 Ultra and Galaxy Book5 Pro as the direct connection is painfully slow, and “Quickshare” is neither convenient or quick. Most of my videos are short and/or small. Choosing a 1.07GB MP4 took around 3 seconds to transfer from the S24 Ultra and then a batch of 6 videos that were of various sizes not larger than 240MB at 911MB total also only around 3 seconds to transfer. And moving all of it to the Book5 Pro via Thunderbolt 4 USB-C, took about 3 seconds. I have always been a fan of SanDisk when buying Flash/Thumb drives, SD Cards, etc. The quality remains the same with this SSD and the Extreme definitely feels like it will live up to that expectation. The casing is a matte plastic on the front and soft tpu type rubber on the back giving just enough grip to not slip, but also easily slide in and out of a clothing or backpack pocket. As for size comparison, its not the biggest or the smallest, but with the best IP Rating (65) of my trio, its nice to know if I did drop it, its covered. Having the plastic casing is probably what helps achieve that rating as the other T7 and X10 Pro are both Aluminum cases. The T7 is “shock resistant” and the X10 Pro is IP55, so the SanDisk comes in for the win on protection. I use the drive mainly for storage and file swapping. I did run some videos directly from the drive and did not notice any heating, but I am sure if you are using it to edit directly to the drive it will get warm as all do. If you are in the market for an SSD, especially one that is IP rated, then I can highly recommend the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD.

Faster than the speed of... Fast
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you need a lot of space, that you can also transfer files at extremely fast speeds, this is what you want. Connects easily to any computer with the included USB-C cable, phones with a USB-C port and Action cameras such as Go Pro. Great for clearing on-board memory or reusable SD cards. Took 8GB of video off my phone in what seemed like the blink of an eye. Where speed is really noticeable is on a computer or laptop. What took almost 10 minutes or more to transfer on my old portable Drive, is now 2 mins or less. Makes transferring files such a low stress breeze. It's lightweight and small, but decently rugged. Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Just add a carabiner and clip to your gear. Has a rubberized texture to keep from sliding. Claims to have drop protection up to 3 meters. I can confirm a bout a 5 foot drop onto some rocks with no issues other than a scuff. I do wish it had a cover for the USB-C port to keep debris out, in my mind that would make it the ultimate outdoor active media storage holder. Pricey, but worth it.

Excellent speeds and potability
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm not sure what I was expecting as I have always used flash drives. I wasn't aware of how small and portable these really are so I was really surprised to see how portable they have become. Not only is it built like a tank but it has a great textured grip and has a loop so it could be attached to virtually anything with a hook. I did some testing on Mac and Windows and had no compatibility issues. I didn't have the tools to measure exact speeds but I used a 2.1GB file on both and transferring back and forth was seconds. I gotta assume that would exceed the speeds almost any person could ever need. It also comes with a very short cable which worked well. It also worked to backup my Android tablet and phone and not have to rely and trust the cloud software to do it properly. I think it's safe to say these have become small and durable enough to be a necessity at this point especially as files continue to get larger. I review many products. Many good and many bad. This one is high up on the good side for sure.

Fast, Rugged, and Packed with Useful Features!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’ve been using the SanDisk Extreme 1TB Portable SSD for more than a week now, and it’s easily one of the most reliable external drives I’ve owned. From a performance standpoint, it’s seriously quick. With advertised speeds up to 2000MB/s, transferring large files like 4K videos or full system backups is noticeably faster compared to traditional external drives. In everyday use, everything feels smooth and efficient—no long waits when moving big folders or working directly off the drive. Just keep in mind that to reach top speeds, your device needs to support the same high-speed USB standard. The build quality is another big win. It has a rugged, rubberized exterior and comes with IP65 water and dust resistance, which makes it great for travel or working in less-than-perfect conditions. It also feels solid in hand and durable enough to handle drops and daily wear without worry. Portability is excellent. It’s small, lightweight, and pocket-friendly, with a handy loop for attaching it to a bag or keychain. Despite its size, the 1TB capacity provides plenty of space for photos, videos, documents, and backups. Security is also built in, with 256-bit AES hardware encryption and password protection, which is a nice touch if you’re storing sensitive files. Setup couldn’t be easier—it’s truly plug-and-play, working seamlessly with both Windows and Mac systems, and even some mobile devices via USB-C. Pros: - Very fast transfer speeds (great for large files) - Durable, travel-friendly design - Compact and lightweight - Strong built-in security features - Easy to use across devices Cons: - You need compatible hardware to get maximum speed - Slightly pricier than basic external drives Overall: This drive delivers exactly what it promises—high speed, durability, and convenience in a compact form. Whether you’re backing up important data or working with large media files, it’s a dependable choice and well worth the investment.

Solid backup and storage
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Unboxing the SanDisk Extreme 1TB Portable SSD was simple and straightforward. The box didn’t come with much just the drive itself, and a short USB‑C cable. The SSD felt surprisingly light the moment I picked it up, and the rubberized texture gave it a nice grip. It’s small enough to slip into a pocket without feeling bulky, which I appreciated right away. After setting it up, I started using it mainly for photo and video backups. One specific moment that made me appreciate it was during a weekend trip when I filled up my camera’s memory card faster than expected. I plugged the SSD into my laptop at the hotel, and transferring everything over was quick and painless. I didn’t sit there timing it, but it definitely felt faster than the older portable drives I’ve used. The compact size made it easy to toss into my backpack without worrying about weight or space. Another thing I noticed is how durable it feels. I’m not rough with my things, but I did accidentally drop it from my desk once. It didn’t leave a mark and the drive worked normally afterward. I also like that it’s water‑ and dust‑resistant, which gives me some peace of mind when I’m out shooting or working in different environments especially at the beach. It’s not perfect, though. The included cable is a bit short, so depending on your setup, you might want a longer one. And the price is higher than some other portable SSDs, though the build quality and speed help justify it. I recommend the SanDisk Extreme 1TB Portable SSD if you want something small, sturdy, and fast for storing or backing up files. It’s been dependable for me, especially when traveling or working on the go.
