I am a professional Audio/Video Engineer, and I am not a fan of Sony Audio. Before selecting these headphones, I tested the JBL Everest Elite 700, and bought the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 (I am a Sennheiser fan) as well as the Sony MDR-1000X, for a side by side comparison.
My assumption was that the Sennheiser would blow away the Sony, as all Sennheiser does is audio. Although they sounded great, the active Noise Cancellation fell just a bit short.
When I tested the Sony MDR-1000X under the same conditions, I felt that the Active Cancellation was better than the other two, but the sound quality wasn't quite there.........UNTIL!!!!
More on that later, here is how I tested the headphones that I bought. I have moderate sized Studio Monitors in my office and I used a digital recording of a Jet Airline Cabin to test the Active Noise Cancellation. I set my system to around 80dB, about average for a jet airline, and tested the different features of the two headphones. The Sennheiser was a quick test, as it is on or off. It sounded good, but I still heard noise.
I then tested the Sony MDR-1000X under the same conditions and found the Active Noise Cancellation to be outstanding. You can also adjust the level of Active Cancellation that you desire, so if you are out on city streets, you can avoid being hit by a bus. The audio quality was okay UNTIL.........I accidently pressed a button on the bottom of the left earcup while adjusting the fit around my ears. The next thing I heard was a female voice saying "Optimizer ON", which was then followed by some tones and beeps. She then said " Optimizer Complete", and with that being said, the music came back on and OMG!!! After Optimizing the headphones with a simple button push, the sound was loud and crisp with full rich bass lines and smooth bright highs. Vocals were crystal clear and I was listening to the best set of headphones that I had heard in many years. I tried the Sony's because I had seen Sony headphones in Broadcast booths and studios around the world, but never believed that a $400 headphone would sound this good......thru Bluetooth, no doubt!!! There is also a very cool feature for conversation. If you cup your hand over the right earcup, it mutes the media and opens up the ambient microphones built into the headphones, and amplifies the outside sound, so that you can converse with someone and never have to remove the headphones. Very handy feature when traveling with others. It also provides a excellent battery life of over 30 hours of playtime at a moderate volume, and is of excellent build quality.
Overall, the Sony MDR-1000X well exceeded my expectations in every way, and are now a part of my collection of high end audio components. Audio is completely objective and an individual choice, but everyone should consider this product if considering any at all.

These headphones work excellent on noise cancellation and audio quality front. Leafblower noise is reduced to a hum, the touch controls are really helpful (not gimmicky at all). They feel comfortable for a long duration as well. Battery life is around 20-25 hours and have never been an issue. They are really well-built and feel worth the price.

I did a lot of research prior to purchasing the SONY 1000X headphones. It came down to a BOSE set and this SONY set. Best Buy had both in-store to demo test. They were both good but the SONY had crisper, cleaner high and high-middle tones and I think the bass was also bolder than the BOSE. Both are similarly priced but the SONY headphones are worth their price.

Very happy. First set of NC headphones. Used them for two cross country flights so far and feel they make a huge difference. Total flight times were both in excess of 6 hours plus layovers and power only once dropped to medium after the return leg. Not silent but close - engines minimal squealing children (others not mine) ignorable so, relaxing and peaceful (as an economy seat can be at least.)
Never tried the Bose so I can't compare. Love the right side swipe features very cool, useful, and intuitively easy.
Enjoy how they work with and are auto detected by both my phone and TV (for when the family is asleep - never really appreciated the PS 4 was in stereo before.)
So far I've found they charge on all of my plug in chargers, the suggested "use computer USB" made me doubt the 3.2 amp plug in charger but it worked fine and quickly.
They are not cheap. Thankfully they are considerably more robust than Sony's MDR-XB950 so that worry was removed. I do keep them in the case when I'm not actively wearing them though.

This headset is my first headset that I was happy on getting. At first it looks expensive, and rightfully so, but the noise canceling on it is really good. The weight is heavy either so sitting and studying at a desk for a few hours is great. The battery is also long lasting which was a surprise. The volume doesn’t get so load so it bursts my eardrums either. I mainly use it for traveling or use in the library. Totally worth it.

MDR-1000X - Fantastic Noise Cancelling

The MDR-1000X has Fantastic Noise Cancelling abilities. Surrounding noises are eliminated while either in a room full of noisy co-workers or at home watching a movie in a noisy living room full of kids. Cupping your hand over the Right Head Phone speaker (to temporarily mute what you are listening too), which allows you to hear others speaking and the outside world, is a nice feature. The head phones are light weight, nice looking and comfortable to wear. Connecting the headset to most Blue Tooth device is very easy to do and the battery last a long time before needing to be recharged. I am very happy with the purchase of the MDR-1000X headset and I would recommend the them to anyone needing some peace and quiet from the outside world in order to be able to concentrate, watch a movie, or have a phone conversation. Phone conversations are very clear and the outside surrounding noise is suppressed and has never been an issue on any conversations I have had while using the headset.

I'm into working out and always seem to have headphones on. I wanted a pair of headphones to travel with or relax at home with no wires. Sony's Bluetooth pairs almost instantly which I love. I let the battery die once just to use the cable that came it and it didnt sound bad at all. Battery power is great and I can use it for days on end without a charge. When I take a phone call, I activate the ambient sound feature which allows me to hear myself talk and hear the environment around me. I don't think Bose has that feature lol. The touch/ swipe features are awesome but sometimes I use it by accident. I love the 1000X and do highly recommend them to anyone who wants premium sound quality and the freedom of wireless. Oh and tuning out the world with noise canceling is fun lol.

I've spent hours reading up on reviews for various headphones and i was almost convinced to purchase Bose. While I was waiting for a sale, I saw that these came up on one so I tried them out and loved them! My one hesitation about Bose was not enough bass and the sound quality was not to my standards. But these were great! I use them with an iPhone so if I want to optimize the sound I just use the aux chord and I'm serenaded by my music. I wouldn't hesitate to buy these again!
I do feel that they are every so slightly tight on my head, but that's not even close to being docked one star. They feel sturdy yet light, look great. I love using the feature where I put my hand on the right headphone and the mike automatically comes on so I could hear my surrounding better. The Noise-Cancellation Optimizer is pretty good too although I felt very little difference. But nonetheless the NC is excellent as well!

Best Headphones I Own!

I own these and a pair of the Bose QC35's, which I also love, but the Sony beats them out for only a couple of small reasons. The technology of the Sony's to cup your right ear and it amplifies outside noise so you can hear people is extremely convenient and also, the bass itself is a bit better. The Bose are just slightly more comfortable and the sound is a bit more crisp or clear sounding.

Having compared these to both the Bose QC 35 and Beats studio wireless I can say the following:
Comfort: these are comfortable. I have worn them for hours in end. However Bose has them slightly beaten here.
Noise canceling: suprisingly these seem to have a slightly better noise canceling system than even Bose and are so far past the beats its not worth mentioning them.
Sound: this is subjective but I found these to have superior sound to the two competitors, neither of which was a slouch. The beats were slightly warmer on the low end and the bose were a bit more level overall. However for clarity of sound, these had me hearing details across the spectrum I simply did not hear in the others.
Overall, wonderful product. If you can find these on sale they are a great value. However they are more expensive than the others at the regular price so you need to weigh that into the equation.

Best of the noise cancelling headphones

Awesome headphones. Comes with a very nice case and airplane adapter - the case even has a dummy diagram on it if you forget how to fold the headphones quickly. Noise cancelling works great and the touch on the side to adjust volume and to hear things around you in a stroke of genius.
As long as it's fully charged battery life can get you through the day. There is voice to say how much battery is left and other features I have yet to discover. The only downside which is minor is that taking a phone call with them is not the good - but most headphones fail in this area. Finally very comfortable on your head and where it up to 8hours a day at work no problem. Recommend it definitely. And since it's a big purchase take out a warranty just in case if anything goes wrong. But the build quality on these seem great!

3 Months Later...

I've had these headphones for 3 months now and I have nothing but great things to say about them.
1. The noise canceling is phenomal. They truly block out almost everything in the background. I can put these on in an airport, at the office, or an any other public setting and feel like I'm the only one there. If the noise canceling starts to seem like it may be a little off, I'll calibrate them really quick and they're back to normal. One feature that I really enjoy is being able to hear people speaking over the intercom at airports when the headphones are in noise canceling mode. It really adds to the feeling that I'm the only one there.
2. They are pretty durable. They've traveled with me on multiple flights, on trips to different countries, to the office every day since I've owned them, and to plenty of other places. The build quality is outstanding and they do not feel cheap at all. The provided case keeps the headphones protected and folded into a small space.
3. Ambient sound mode is awesome. Sometimes I feel like I can actually hear more clearly than I normally can with this mode enabled.
Those are the things that have really stood out to me. I've enjoyed them so much that I felt like I should leave a review (I never do this).

After owning a set of Bose QC15's for 6 years, it was time to replace. I auditioned the Bose 35's and Sony 1000's. The Sony's sound better and most comfortable. My only issue due to the fact I travel weekly is they are a bit bulkier. But comfort, sound quality and battery life won out. Oh, they look great too!

Although a bit on the heavy side and high price range, compared to the Bose equivalent, the sound quality and noise cancelling is awesome! The touch controls take a bit getting used to but they are a great added feature as well.

These headphones sound great. The noise cancelling feature works very well. They are very comfortable, providing a perfect fit and don’t weigh you down. Most on-ear headphones tend to weigh on your ears after awhile, but these can be worn for long periods of time with no discomfort. They have a sharp, clean design as well.

I had what seemed a good experience compared to what others have written about. Purchased the headphones which were pricey but well worth the price. The best feature is the noise cancellation feature as I commute on trains and fly for work at times. They are also very comfortable so for me it was money well spent.

I am I guess what you would call an Audiophile. I believe the sound quality is far more important than the price. I have purchased and literally returned several over the ear headphones. I gave each pair a very thorough work out. Although the Sony is slightly heavier the sound is amazing. From the lowest frequencies to the highest the response of these headphones is truly amazing. Beats to much Bass, Sennheiser (my favorite) 4.5's are too small and hurt my head, Bose (just a good marketing strategy, they really aren't so great, Ok but not great) Klipsch makes an amazing set but now wireless option start to diminish. These are the best I have found and trust me I spent months looking.

Buying these headphones was probably the best purchase I've made in years. I work with some extremely loud individuals and these wipe out that noise and allow me to comfortably listen to music without feeling like I'm hurting my ears. The sound quality is amazing and they are extremely comfortable.

I record and engineer CDs as a serious hobby and work for an audio product company. In the last year or so I've amassed a collection of headphones, well, for competitive analysis to be honest. I've bought some other in the same price class that were boomy and buzzy, some just sounded thumpy which is how a lot of people like their music - but these Sony's are clean, full sounding and pretty darned awesome. The battery life is good enough, they're light, comfortable and just really good headphones. I do think they color the music a little too much to be used as mixing headphones but despite that, they're just marvelous to listen to.

I find it an excellent product. I really like the touch control systems. Comparing to Bose, I really like the NFC, ambient control and covering one ear to hear the sound features. Its been a month so far I have excellent battery life.
A slight criticism would be after having it for very Long hours I could feel the force and sweating on my ears, its little irritating.
