This is a well priced 3TB back up drive. The USB 3 interface is way faster than the previous USB 2. On the wish list is that Western Digital would report the drive's RPM which is related to writing speed. I would have preferred a drive with 7200 RPM. The other negative comment is that the drive is formatted so that it is compatable with both MAC and Windows systems. This might seem like a good thing but in the Windows world, it means you can't use Window's imaging software to image your drive without reformatting it. This would take a lot of hours! To create a backup image in Win10, you have to download a copy of Acronis True Image from Western Digital's website (which is free). This is good software and easy to use, but it is different. This is not made clear on the box though. The other noticeable thing from previous WD backup drives is the lack of an access indicator light. You don't know when the drive is being written too or when it is in sleep mode. Not a big deal but I would have preferred and indicator LED.

So far so good and no problems to report. The WD Backup is functional, but I had to figure out how to automate the "wake up" in order to do a late night backup. It would be nice if that was automatic. I like it that it stops spinning when not actively in use - why wear it out? I also wish there was a way to know what the files that it won't back up really are. There's a list of files that the software won't back up, and it makes sense, but still it would be good to know. Just do a search for them, right? That doesn't work, so they probably are protected files. Doesn't make me confident that the operating system is truly backed up. I partition my hard drive and put data on one drive, and OS on the other, and WD does show that both are backed up. Regardless, I will soon do an image of the operating system to make sure that I have a solid recovery capability of at least some point in time. Win 7 Pro on a Dell workstation.

    Good Unit w/Issues

I purchased this unit as a replacement for the one I had previously. That unit worked fine until I accidently kicked it. It was starting to show signs that it may go out soon. I fought through uploading all of the information from one drive to another, and it worked like a charm. Unfortunately after I rebooted the computer for the first time, it would lock up. Tried several more times and the computer would lock up when booting up. I could disconnect it, reboot, and plug the drive in, and it would operate well. I tried all of the recommended fixes, but no luck. I finally ended up purchasing a another brand portable drive and that unit stays plugged in and the computer reboots as it should. It seems that it is a recognized problem. I would recommend this unit with conditions.

    Watch for Boot Issues

Like some others, my Windows 7 computer would not boot up after a plug-and-play installation of this hard drive. I tried various fixes suggested online, but the only one that worked was the Western Digital recommendation to re-format the drive using the NTFS format instead of the exFAT format in which the drive is pre-formatted by WD. So, check this out before you save anything on the drive, since a reformat will erase all the data on the drive. And make sure you save the WD software that comes with the drive. If you recopy it onto the drive after reformatting, perhaps the WD Smartware will recognize the drive as a WD drive. I erased that software during the reformat, and so Smartware doesn't see the drive anymore. So I decided to use the Windows 7 backup program instead of WD's program. Otherwise, the drive seems to function well, now that I've resolved the no-boot issue.

    WD Great Brand, But!

My old external hard drive (another brand) failed. So I had to purchase another one. I spoke to a sales associate at Best Buy and discussed that I needed a new hard drive to back-up my computer. He said this one is really good for what I need. It has more than enough room. So, I made my purchase. However, when I originally purchased this my idea was for it to over ride my previous back-up just like the one I had. It doesn't do that! After purchasing this and after 5 months. There isn't enough room left on this 3.0 hard drive. After contacting the company they informed me that this isn't the right one for what I wanted. WD customer service is great and I am in the process of purchasing the one I need. Other than the above, it is a good product, but make sure you do your research before purchasing an external hard drive! Lesson learned......

It worked really well with Windows 10; however, it does not work with Windows OS before Windows 7 so, basically you must have at least Windows 7 for it to work. I am also making a review on my DD3 8GB RAM just recently installed I wasn't able to make a review before because it wasn't installed, but it has made a big difference in my desktop PC's processing speed before I had to hit control alt delete and click on program manager then click on end program when the program or Internet browser would not respond, however, now I don't have to do that at all. so the 8GB of RAM bumping my desktop PC's RAM up to 12GB of RAM made a big difference.

Installation instructions not very good. Device did not respond as indicated in the instructions. Doesn't work well with Windows 10 which ought to be a no-brainer. It causes my 6 year old HP desk top with Win 10 to try to reboot but it just hangs up and I have to disconnect the drive to get it to restart. Their help desk has been responsive but not very helpful. Their solution is for me to change something in the bios. No way. It works reasonably well with my newer HP laptop but the software seems clunky. It doesn't automatically backup all users. You have to futz around the settings to get it to do so. It would be nice if I could just leave it connected to my desktop but I can't.

I have been using a 1 TB WD External hard drive for personal use. I recently took up photography and have needed a ton of extra space and since I already knew how my 1 TB was and how good of a purchase that has been, I did not hesitate to get the 3 TB version. It is reliable, quick and easy to use. I have seen other similar devices that my friends use and it doesn't look like there is that much of a difference, I just decided to go with WD as I am familiar with them and have loved using their products.

This does exactly what I need it to do. Something sort of a long term storage without having to store so many things on there that are too important if that make sense. The only reason for four stars is because, while this is on, if you turn your computer on (or in my case my computer can't speak for everyone else) your computer will not boot up. I've tried changing the settings in the bios and see if that would make a difference but it hasn't. I have to have it off first and then turn my computer on and then turn it on to get it to work. It's kind of annoying but besides that little blip for me, I would definitely recommend this to someone looking for a HDD.

Hard drive writes fast but causes usb conflict.

This hard drive writes very fast and works well when there is no conflict going on. I have had four occurrences where the computer will not work and I only have a black screen, even after reboot. One time I even disassembled the computer and changed the power supply trying to troubleshoot. Though the motherboard was going bad and then I unplugged the USB for this hard drive and then everything worked again. Seems to work for a while after plugging back in but continues to cause a conflict. I have used different ports on the back, top, and front of the PC.

This is a good drive, its quick and quiet, my only gripe is that I bought from Best Buy because its listed as having a 3 year Parts and Labor Warranty, other retailers said only 2 year, so although I could have bought it cheaper elsewhere, I decided that was worth paying the extra for. Now I've just noticed that on the box and the paperwork inside it says only 2 year warranty. Though I'm quite happy with the drive itself I just feel I've been conned, leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

I had a difficult time installing the software for this product. First, programs mentioned in the manual were on the disk drive. I had to go to the support website to download the files. After expanding the files (.zip), The program still would execute or wouldn't execute. This is going back to Best Buy ASAP. The Support webpage was semi-helpful. It told you what was wrong, but offered no step-by-step procedures on how to resolve it. I was hoping to use this as a back up when converting from my PC (Windows 7) to an Apple.

Overall nice hardrive. Did exactly what I needed which was to transfer pictures and videos from my computer and phone over to external hardrive to save space on computer. Only thing I didn’t like was the hardrives limitations to software compatabilities. As it required me to update my macs software to even be able to use the hardrive. No big deal just don’t really care for macs latest softwares, so wasn’t really interested in updating, but no biggie on that. Other than that great hardrive!!

My purpose for buying this drive was to use it as the Time Machine drive for my iMac. The product description says that it is "Compatible with Apple® Time Machine". I believe it came formatted as exFAT, so it could be read/written to by both Macs and PCs. When I went to select it as my Time Machine drive, El Capitan gave me a message that it needed to be formatted as an OS X Extended Volume. Don't know if this is required by El Capitan or all versions of OS X. Reformatted the drive and it now works just fine for Time Machine.

My biggest complaint is that no matter where I tweak power saving settings, it seems this thing goes into some kind of 'standby' mode after not being read from or written to in a while. This then leads to a good 30 to 60 second 'pause' when I try and pull up data from the unit. I did get it just to store data where access speed wasn't a big factor, primarily trying to keep my documents off my SSD. However, I was expecting the usual 'slow because of spinning disks' issue, not this one.

Unlike some HD's this was not just a "plug and go" situation. It took several hours to get the drive to finally work with Time Machine on my new iMac. I made numerous calls to Apple and WD. Finally WD support, which was of very little if any help, suggested I take the drive back and start over with a new one, which I did. Same problems but finally with a lot of online reading, I was able to get things working like they should.

I bought this for my ps4.. I ran out of storage! I caught this on sale for $70..It has an ac cord which i prefer instead of sucking power out of the usb 3.0 drive directly. It was a good buy for the price although i wish i had bought the 4tb instead! You know how storage space is.. Buy 3tb really have 2.76! I like it.. I don't regret the purchase... And also it runs faster than the internal hard drive! Doesn't have on and off buttons though... Thats my only gripe.

I've purchased over 20 of these drives for client backups. Pros: Easy install. Plug and Play. Cons: The preformatted file system is not compatible with some Windows PCs. The BIOS sees it as a active HD and wants to boot to it, and the PC will stay locked in the POST screen until the drive is disconnected. The only fix is to reformat the HD with the NTFS file system. If you already have data stored on it, you'll need to save it before formatting.

Thus far (have had about two months) a great addition that provides peace of mind in knowing that my C drive is being backed up nightly. Easy to set up and install, the 3 TB capacity is more than I will probably ever use. If you have ever experienced a hard drive crash and lost your data, you will want to provide yourself the assurance this never happens again. Notwithstanding cloud backup options, the WD My Book desktop external hard drive is the answer.

I bought this to use as a Time Machine backup for my Mac. It comes formated as FAT32, and I tried to use Apple's Disk Utility to erase it and reformat it as Extended Journaled with only one partition. It would not allow me. I asked a Geek Squad member why it didn't work. He told me that WD encrypts it so you can't do what I wanted to do. It can be used with a Mac but will be slower because of the multiple partitions of FAT 32. I will probably return it.
