Make sure you know your needs before buying

I bought this for Comcast service. I read reviews first and a few mentioned limitation on the distance that the router/gateway provides. This is IMPORTANT. If you are going to use wireless on the same floor or within about 50 feet of the unit then this is a great all in one device. I have a 2,300 SF 2 story house and cannot get adequate wi fi upstairs with this unit which is consistent with otherr reviews. I confirmed this with Comcast at one of their Xfinity customer stores. I am returning the unit to Best Buy and obtaining a stand alone modem with telephony that can have a separate router/gateway of my choosing attached to the modem. If you have distance requirements for wi fi that are greater than a short distance from this unit then consider other solutions.

Good Modem - Identical to Comcast Rental Modem

I just purchased this modem. Before installing it I checked the WiFi coverage compared to the identical modem I was renting from Comcast for $10 a month. The coverage is identical. Next I called Comcast and worked with a level 2 tech. He was quick to come on the phone and walked me through the entire installation including phone hookup. The process required 35 minutes which brought my internet, TV, and phone on line. Next I called billing to let them know I was now using my own modem. A nice women from billing removed my monthly charge for the Comcast modem. This call took 6 minutes. I checked my internet speeds in various parts of our 4 bedroom home and found the speeds to be identical to the Comcast rental modem. I am happy with the modem and look forward to having it paid off in 20 months by saving rental charges. We also use TiVo which we are very happy with. This means we now have no Comcast rental equipment expense.

Works great, but short range for ChromeCast

I had rented one of these for two years and now have bought one. Both have worked just as one would hope, including a good wi-fi signal throughout my house. But when I recently added ChromeCast, I found that the range was very limited. Upon checking the ChromeCast router list, it recommends no more than 15 feet! My installation was about 20 feet (and around two stub walls) and did not work. I moved my router closer (and on the same side of the wall) and now it works 'perfectly'.

    Good router and WiFi range

This modem/router offers a solid set of features. The most basic is as a modem and router, which it handles as it should. The WiFi signal could be more powerful, but this is a single band unit so I'm ok with that. I have a second router to distribute the signal in the rest of the home. Honestly, it does what it needs to. The only thing that disappoints me is that I could not find the separately purchasable battery backup at Best Buy. Well, actually, there is also the fact that this is pretty much the only modem you can purchase for Comcast to work with their version of VOIP. So, really it was t the only option, even though it's a good one.

    Xfinity Comcast Internet/Telephone Works

Ok so. I purchased this modem yesterday from bestbuy. Now I did see the xfinity customers complaining about not working. Well I setup the modem today and called comcast. The comcast reps in the Philippines setup my modem after i gave them the mac. But the phone didn't work so they transferred me to another rep then to another rep and the third rep said the phone wasn't setup to the modem and he setup the modem with my phone number...that it was locked or some jazz. so then my modem reset and the phone number works now on the modem. When I went to the comcast store today the woman at the counter said that the modem i bought wouldn't work... that a technician told her the modem doesn't work,BUT i told her that they setup the modem with the reps in the Philippines....so thanks Filipino comcast reps! So to you customers that are having trouble these modems..these modems do work with comcast and the telephone also works but comcast has to setup the modem and phone separately by phone. If you can't get it working you need to call comcast and get the proper reps to setup the modem and telephone. I tested the speed and speedtest reached 240mb dwn and 12 up. The reps called me on the modem phone and the phone works phone light is on, i have dial-tone and calls have been made. It is unfair that there aren't other modem/telephony options!

I have Comcast / Xfinity and got this to save the outrageous $10/month rental for this device. I've already paid for this modem ten times over in rental payments. It installed easily, in fact I didn't even have to talk to a technician. Anyone who can affort the up front money is crazy not to get one of these and stop paying Comcast the rental fee.

I would have given 5 stars, but the router sucks. Im sitting next to it and it won't load anything. I recommend this product to all comcast customers who need phone service. But I highly suggest disabling the router and getting a seperate one.

This unit is not - repeat not - able to provide high speed wireless signal to your wi-fi connected electronics. If you read your contracts, you'll see that the cable internet provider promises you speeds based on hard-wired ethernet connections to your modem. For that, this unit works. It also ties in your phone for that cable based service. The wifi however, does not deliver with any speed or reliability. I am getting over 90mbps via cable ethernet to the hard wired pc but only 8 to mid teens on the built in wifi on a 50mbps service. This is extra cost speed that we can't get but there is no other unit out there for cable voice/internet/wifi and this is indeed what our local cable provider would install as well. This in not isolated. This is our second one of these units in less than a week - the previous one being totally unable to support wifi at all. The only recourse is to connect another wireless router to one of the ethernet ports and run it that way. At least that will get you into the 20's for speed on a high speed line. The only way I can imagine people being pleased with this unit is if they only have 10mbps service or spend most of their time on hard wire equipment connected by ethernet port cables. Our cable provider techs have been here twice with no resolution and you can find online complaints about this unit for the very reasons listed here and the same plug in your old router fix. If this is the only game in town for voice/internet through your cable company, the only smart way to play it is not to play at all. Dial up is more reliable but you have to deal with a whole new set of problems/people there as well. Off the grid is sounding better and better...

Xfinity DOCSIS 3.0 Redidential Gateway + Router

The modem/router works great. The filmware took about a hour to update. Once film ware updated. I was able to use my phone and internet. Xfinity/comcast is not the only cable company that this modem/router works with. It also works with other cable companies like northland communication. I have not tried other cable companies with this modem/router yet, but I'm positive that this modem/router will work with not only xfinity but also northland communication. This modem/router might be a little pricey but after a few years, it will pay for itself. This will save you $10.00 a month for rental fees. In a few years you will have earned your money back through savings. Then after you will be saving even more. So, if you are planning on keeping phone and internet service with a cable company for more then two years. It makes since to buy your own equipment. You will not regret it.

I think it works fine, although I did have to get a range extender for PS4 gaming. With the extender my son is not complaining about not being able to connect wirelessly. Without the extender he was complaining. If you don't game, this is a fine product. If you do game, perhaps a better product.

Comcast just went up to $10/month to rent this. This is the identical unit to what I was leasing from them. I saw several units cheaper on the internet (e.g., ebay), but I am nervous about using a refurb, not being able to return it if I couldn't get it working, and also not having the 2 year warranty on such an expensive device.

I purchased this item in March of 2013, I had trouble with Comcast to begin with but they finally quit charging me for the item. But now since Sept. they have been charging me the $10.00 rental fee for a modem I own. They say because it has xfinity on it, it is the property of Comcast. I showed my paper where I purchased the item and was still told IT has XFINITY on it, so it belongs to Comcast, I would recommend checking with your local Comcast service before purchasing this item. It does work very well....

From the techie side this is a good all in one modem and router. It has plenty of ports to plug in on the back if you have wired devices and it the wireless range for both bands is excellent. I have this unit on the second floor of my home on the far left well and I have a full signal in the basement on the other side of my home. I have my home line connected as well and have had no difficulties there. From the customer service side, it takes a LONG time to set this unit up with Comcast. I was on the phone two hours to set up wifi, cable (2 boxes), and a home phone to tie in with this unit. Granted I was setting up new service so if you are upgrading your existing modem/router to this unit that should be a significantly shorter window. From the hardware standpoint this unit is tough but bulky. It's easily the largest modem/router I've ever used and if you're someone who likes to discretely hide your networking equipment this isn't the unit for you. Overall the performance is great but I have to deduct a star for the design.

I purchased this online because Best Buy is a Minnesota company (where I live) and because I knew that I could return it to a store if necessary. It is replacing an old, outdated telephony modem and router. My son set this up for me in less than an hour. He was able to provide the necessary device information to Comcast via internet . I do not have Xfinity cable tv, so I don't know how well that works. I have a TiVo Roamio connected wirelessly with an ota antenna, and that is working fine. I also have Xfinity Voice and that also is working as it should. I was very happy to replace two devices (and connecting cords) with one device. Overall, So far, so good.
