The shield protects as stated by manufacturer. I recently had to order a replacement as my shield was broken/scratched when my 10 pound dog accidentally jumped on my iPad while it sat on the sofa. The iPad itself was unscratched/cracked, but the shield was cracked/broken from the top of the screen to the bottom.
