Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the director/producer team responsible for such sci-fi blockbusters as Independence Day, Stargate, and Godzilla, take a step back in time with this drama set during the American Revolution. Farmer Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) was born and raised in South Carolina, and fought bravely during the French-Indian wars. But since the death of his wife, Benjamin has renounced violence and quietly tends his crops, raising his seven children alone. In 1776, over Benjamin's objections, his oldest son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) joins the fight against the British. Gabriel returns from battle seriously wounded, with Lord General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) calling for his arrest. A skirmish breaks out on Benjamin's plantation, and one of his children is killed as Gabriel is captured by Col. Tavington (Jason Isaacs) and sentenced to hang. Benjamin sets aside his vow of pacifism and rescues Gabriel; with the help of his former comrade-in-arms Harry Burwell (Chris Cooper), the father and son form a regiment of Carolina patriots whose cunning and ruthlessness make them heroes among the colonists -- and wanted men by British troops. Loosely adapted from the true story of Francis Marion and filmed on location in South Carolina, The Patriot was the first feature film made with the cooperation of the Smithsonian Institute, who advised the producers on historical accuracy. Joely Richardson also stars as Charlotte, Benjamin's sister-in-law who helps him care for the children.~Mark Deming
It's a solid film but more emphasis on the Blu-ray transfer. It varies when it comes to converting certain movies to Blu-ray quality from the 1980's through 1990's. And to a degree early 200's, but the quality of picture and sound stand out in particular in this Blu-ray conversion.
This movie was panned and stained when fake reviews were added in press ads by fake writers by the studio and it doomed this movie at the box office. Caused quite an uproar in Hollywood at the time. Take away the static over this and this movie is great.
However, this movie has made a comeback on cable and streaming services. I love this movie and have watched it numerous times. Mel Gibson is great and so is young Heath Ledger. Also there is a terrific supporting cast of actors and actresses. I had to own this for my collection. A few historical inaccuracies don't hurt or blemish the main message of this wonderful movie.
The Patriot is one of my all-time favorite movies. It's one of those movies I can watch over and over again and not get sick of. Mel Gibson, as always, plays his historic role with incredible passion and really makes this movie come to life. I personally love era-based films and this one does a really good job of keeping everything as close to accurate for the time period as possible
