Fun film, but not a true "Steelbook"
|Posted .So, the 4/5 star rating is not for the film - It's for the product. The film is a fantastic, fun, and stupid ride through one of the better of the many zombie franchises. Not winning any academy awards, but its unpretentious presentation is definitely a winner among my friends and family. The positive: This is a good blu-ray. Sound and picture are what I would expect from a good, physical medium. The picture is about the best presentation that I would expect could easily be extracted from the source, and the sound is balanced well. It's not demo material, but it's a big step up from DVD and streaming options (Comparing @mazon, particularly) in clarity. The negative: This will sound a bit nit-picky, but it needs to be said... BestBuy has a habit of labeling everything in a metal box as a [Steelbook] in their product listings, and then have too few images to back it up. Any "REAL" steelbook is built by a European company, called Scanavo, and has a particular style and construction, generally considered to be the highest quality of a handful of options for metal box packaging. This product is actually a slightly different package, made by the Star company, called a "MetalPak"... Unless the product description changes, the label of [Steelbook] is misleading, and I think that it merits at least a loss of a star. Using a trademarked and copyrighted name and then delivering a competing product is not cool. May seem a little thing if you're not a collector, but if that's the case, no one will make you buy a Steelbook anyhow. The included picture shows the spine difference on the common metal packaging types as of 2017/2018 in the US and European markets. Conclusion: Fun film, sub-par packaging for the current product description (Product labeled as Steelbook on the website, but is a Star MetalPak).

"This Twinkie thing isn't over"
|Posted .Yet another take on the zombie apocalypse. However, like Sean Of The Dead (another excellent film) did for he UK, it adds a comedic twist that gives it fresh "life" (so to speak). It's the classic story of the struggle for survival in the good'ol USofA when it all hits the fan after the dead have risen. Apparently derived from a proposed tv show that even FOX passed on (go figure), it's the story of a young man who's ever growing list of survival rules (wonderfully highlighted in digital effects) & a shotgun help him to stay alive. In his travels he meets a seemingly reckless guy who takes great delight in the dispatching of the undead, but their strenuous friendship is tested when they meet two sisters who have their own unique rules of survival. The tv show also would've had a "Zombie Kill Of The Week" in every episode - watch for it in the flick. PLEASE DO NOT REVEAL THE SURPRISE GUEST STAR because when it happens, you will be so surprised that if you were told in advance it will probably spoil the moment. It's THAT worth it. Also, stick around through the credits for the easter egg after them. Language, violence & gore makes this unsuitable for younger viewers.

A Diamond in the Rough
Posted .Zombieland, the $23,000,000 zombie movie that raced to the top of the box office and claims the zombie movie king box office crown. Welcome to the United States of Zombieland. When US residents contract an extremely viral form of Mad Cow disease it converts the host into an infected flesh eating monster that chews its way through the entire world. Zombieland is probably one of the most refreshing horror comedies of this decade. This is what I personally consider the American Shaun of the Dead... personally I enjoy it more than Shain, but that is just me and of course my opinions don't reflect everyones taste in movies. We follow a group of four survivors as they roam the US trying to get to an Amusement park in hopes of finding some normalcy in the zombie infected world. Each survivor is aplty named after the city in which they lived prior to the zombie onslaught, which I considered something brilliant in terms of horror comedy writing because as the characters mention not knowing their names makes it easier for them to not get attached. On the journey we have Tallahassee, a butt kicking wild man, played to perfect comedic timing by Woody Harrelson. The closeted nerd Columbus, played to perfection by Jesse Einsberg, The fiesty and cunning Wichita and Little Rock played by Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin respectively. Zombieland can easily be considered the frat party zombie film. It can be enjoyed by one person, but it works better with a crowd. While some would consider that comment to be a slight against the film it is not. It is a compliment in every form. One of the greatest zombie films of all time is George Romero's DAWN of the DEAD and Romero himself states people get together andparty with Dawn of the Dead, and this is exactly what you can do with Zombieland. Now Zombieland isn't a deep film, in fact its message of "family is where you find it", is presented but not shoved down your throat it is basically there to show that even people of opposite backgrounds can learn to help each other and protect each other. Zombieland serves up the laughs quite frequently by letting Woody Harrelson loose to unleash his zombie killing skills upon the infected population. Most of the great and funny gags come from the rules for Surviving Zombieland and how Woody dispatches the would be dispatchers. However once Wichita and Little Rock join the fold the laughs increase at a fast pace including the 8 minute long cameo from comedic superstar Bill Murray. Zombieland is comedic escapism at its best, and can be enjoyed by an audience aged 15 and up. Aside from the R-rating and some use of the F-word there is nothing extremely offensive in this film that would require it to be shielded from the younger ones. Truly a cult classic in the waiting and it rightly deserves its places on the list of one of the best zombie films ever made. The Blu-Ray PQ is superb. For you HD folks out there wanting to show off your home theater this is the disc to get your hands on. Rich colors, and contrast are a highlight to this film. Zombieland was shot on the Panavision Genesis Camera system. A camera system built for shooting Motion pictures digitally. this is hands down one of the best digital cinema cameras made today. (4.75 out of 5) The Blu-Ray AQ is a DTS HD-MA 5.1 track that i found to be a tad loud at times when it comes to the sound fx. The dialog and soundtrack have a nice balanced mix, but the sound fx can be quite loud at times. (4 out of 5) The BR exclusive PiP BTS track is a nice tidbit to have, but is partly a re-hash of some of the special features also found on the disc. For those who own the Play Station 3 there are Zombieland themes, however please note Zombieland will require you to update your PS3 to firmware version 3.01 or higher.
