This complete recording of the a cappella choral works of Francis Poulenc marks the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Ensemble Aedes and brings to a close a cycle initiated in 2009. Francis Poulenc's a cappella choral compositions form a unique ensemble, revealing a fragile interiority suffused with profound humanity. For him there was no sense of division between the secular and the sacred in his choral works he appears to have considered them as a single entity, stemming from the same inspiration. From the Chanson à boire (1922) to the Laudes de saint Antoine de Padoue (1957), all of his compositions show the same fervor, clarity, and depth of feeling. Album Tracks 1. In addition to his popular compositions such as orchestral works and chamber music, György Ligeti also wrote vocal music, among them numerous and demanding a cappella choral works. These, just like his canonically treated instrumental works, reflect his changes of style. With the exception of the Latin 'Lux aeterna' (1966) and 'Three Fantasias' based on Friedrich Hölderlin (1982) Ligeti exclusively set Hungarian poetry to music, showing a marked preference for texts by Balint Balassa (1554-1594) and Sándor Weöres (1913-1989). Ligeti wanted to set the respective contents to music programmatically but focussed especially on particular phonetic sound sequences, rhythms, intonations and accentuations of the Hungarian language. Translations of this speech music are nigh on impossible and even dispensable as you do not have to understand the words in order to experience the choral works as music that is rich in tone colours, rhythmically concise and extremely expressive. The radio choir of SWR is one of the international top ensembles on the professional choir scene. Ever since the ensemble was founded almost 75 years ago it has devoted it's passion and extraordinary vocal competence to exemplary performances and the further development of vocal music. Award-winning Yuval Weinberg has been the chief conductor of the SWR Vokalensemble since the beginning of the season 2020/2021.

Presumably spring was Felix Mendelssohn's favorite season. In eight of the total of thirty a cappella choral songs, spring is mentioned in the title; and it is possible that the forest was the place he most liked to be, because not only are very many of his songs about forest he also visualized his music being performed in woodland. In a letter to his mother he described such an experience; and in his own illustration (reproduced in the detailed CD booklet) he even painted the scene. This first complete collection is rounded off by two first recordings. Following their recordings of Bach (TACET 108), Schetz (TACET 99) and Pepping (TACET 123), Matthias Jung and the Saxon Vocal Ensemble once again demonstrate how well they can perform German lyrics.
