Q: With 256GB how many songs can you store with this iPod
A: Using the Apple iTunes application and utilizing the Apple "lossless" encoding, I currently have almost 4,000 songs on my iPod Touch (7th Gen). Much of my song library (around 70%) consists of songs that have been imported from my CD collection. The rest were downloaded from iTunes. This is only consuming 90 GB of storage and this includes the "base" applications such as Numbers, Keynote, iMovie. I also have about 40 videos (varying lengths from iPhone and other camera sources) and 1,200 photos. The Apple "lossless" import encoding has the best audio quality for this device and manages to have a decent balance between file size and audio quality. The file size for the song will also vary by song length. You can import CD audio tracks directly from a CD for the highest audio resolution, however this will significantly reduce the number of songs you can place on the iPod. (Been there, done that...) A "typical" 3-5 minute song imported directly from a CD will be around 35-50 MB compared to 4-5 MB using the Apple "lossless" compression. This is the 4th iPod that I have purchased. The last iPod was the 160 GB with a rotating hard disk and I had that one filled up halfway pretty quickly. Not to mention knowing that the hard disk would one day eventually fail. The screen area for the 7th generation iPod is really nice as well. Additionally the audio processing for the 7th generation iPod has improved (at least to my ears) as I am hearing more details in the songs that I had on previous iPods and am noticing really nice staging/channel separation. Hope this helps.
