(Ludwig van Beethoven) The InchMusical OfferingInch collection of pieces, dedicated to the Prussian King, Frederick II, is a contrapuntal masterpiece, in which Johann Sebastian Bach seems to draw every conceivable facet from a single theme (Thema Regium - royal theme). It is a musical testament of the old master, full of freshness, creativity and original quality - like an endless sea. With this recording, Ensemble Barockin' presents a musically careful and genuinely new interpretation. Ensemble Barockin' is an international ensemble with musicians from Russia, France, Germany and Japan who are committed to performing early music in the original sound. The album artwork was created by artist, photographer and graphic designer Marc Köschinger. The cover shows a long time-exposure of the ocean. The picture was exposed at night over a longer period of time, so that it defines neither space nor time, something the musicians of Ensemble Barockin' particularly liked for this very special recording of this work by Bach. Music without space and time like a reverberation of the universe - for this, it was added a Morse code to the text on the cover that makes the composer's name sound through space like an echo JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH

Vox Luminis has teamed up with the Freiburger Barockorchester again, and together they celebrate music for Ascension Day. This topic inspired great composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, four of whose Ascension cantatas have been preserved. The festive and colourful Cantata BWV 128 was composed towards the end of Bach's second year in Leipzig. The Ascension Oratorio BWV 11 was written for larger forces and ends with a triumphant chorus. In the case of Georg Philipp Telemann, more than thirty cantatas for Ascension Day alone have survived. The cantata Ich fahre auf zu meinem Vater (I ascend unto my Father) was composed in 1721. Lionel Meunier's ensemble and the FBO give a fervent rendering of this captivating music with it's texts focusing on the afterlife.

To Renaissance court of Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan, arrived an eccentric thirty year old man from Florence. It was 1482. He was a mathematician, anatomist, philosopher, constructor, astronomer... But not many people know, that he was also a musician. One of his 16th century biographers wrote, that the Sforzas hired Leonardo not as a painter nor architect, but - what might surprise us - as a musician and a party organizer of impeccable manners. Leonardo called music a worse sister of painting, because a painting lasts forever and music has no material form. It exists only in the moment of the performance, moreover - it dies in the moment of the birth. That's why music couldn't stand comparison to architecture or sculpture. None of Leonardo's musical compositions survived, but apart from many drawings and fragments of treatises, in his notebooks there are also rebuses and... musical riddles, all written in mirror reflection. In at least 18 riddles, Leonardo da Vinci used musical notation. These musical InchgamesInch were not only notes, but they created sentences, because according to solmisation, a method created by Guido of Arezzo, every note has it's own name - 'ut' (later replaced by a much easier to pronounce 'do'), 're', 'mi', 'fa', 'sol', 'la', 'si'. When put into shape, with decoded meaning of the text, they turn out to be incredibly powerful, hypnotic and nostalgic melodies. The present presents music inspired by Da Vinci's enigmas.
