I initially got drawn to downwell on the nintendo switch due to its minimalist design and affordable price. It promised a retro-inspired, fast paced experience, and I was eager to see how it would perform on the Switch. Since this is a digital purchase, there wasn't an unboxing experience, but downloading and starting the game was straightforward. The visuals are immediately striking, with its monochrome palette and pixelated design, evoking a nostalgic arcade feel. What truly stands out are its unique mechanics. The core gameplay revolves around descending into a well, equipped with gunboots to deal with enemies and obstacles. The controls are simple, yet the game offers enough depth through different upgrades and procedurally generated levels that keep the experience fresh every time you play. The addition of tate mode allows you to turn the switch vertically, offering a more immersive experience that's perfect for the game's design. Playing on the switch is a blast, especially in handheld mode. The controls feel tight and responsive, making it easy to pull off combos and navigate through the increasingly difficult stages. The ability to unlock visual filters adds a fun layer of customization, and the game is addictively challenging, with each run feeling rewarding. The portability of the switch complements the quick sessions that this is ideal for. Compared to other roguelike games, this one distinguishes itself with its simplicity and focus on vertical movement. While games other games offer broader gameplay elements, this one excels in its focused, arcade style action, making it a perfect fit for short bursts of play. PROS: Addictive and challenging gameplay. Unique visual style and customization options. Perfect for handheld play on the Switch. CONS: Can get repetitive after extended sessions. The screen can feel crowded during intense moments. Overall, I believe this game is a must have for fans of roguelike and retro-inspired games. Its simplicity, coupled with the depth of its mechanics, makes it a standout title on the switch, especially for those looking for quick, satisfying gameplay. It’s best suited for players who enjoy challenging, skill based games and appreciate minimalist design.

Easy redemption. Pretty fun game with a simple straight forward objective yet fairly difficult.

If you've ever played the popular mobile game, Doodle Jump, I would compare it to that but in reverse. The graphics are old school but the gameplay is quick and fun. Made by Devolver, who also developed Enter the Gungeon - a much larger more fleshed out rogue like game that I really enjoyed.

Fun for what it is, and older arcade style game where you fall down and try to get to the bottom. For only $3, fun to take on trips or if you need something to kill some time.

My 10 year old son loves this game. It has an oldie feel to it, but as long as he likes it, who am I to judge.
